š° Mentor Man's Final Journey: Ashes to Orbit in Emotional Space Tribute
This weekend, a Northeast Ohio man with a passion for astronomy will be honored in a cosmic tribute ā his ashes sent into orbit.
Curtis āCurtā Carson Lau, a retired pharmacist from Mentor, passed away in July 2024 at age 70. A longtime member of the Chagrin Valley Astronomical Society, he loved stargazing and often visited Kennedy Space Center to witness rocket launches.
After his passing, his sons, Griffin and Carson, remembered their dadās wish to have his ashes launched into space ā a plan they quickly moved to fulfill.
They partnered with Celestis, Inc., a memorial spaceflight company that sends cremains into orbit. This weekendās launch, from Vandenberg Space Force Base via a SpaceX SmallSat Rideshare mission, will carry Curtās ashes around Earth at 17,000 mph. After several years in orbit, the capsule will reenter the atmosphere, creating a shooting star-like effect as it burns up.
Later, the capsule will be retrieved off the Alaskan coast and returned to the family ā a symbolic way for the three to share one last launch together.
āItās a final gift,ā said Carson. āA meaningful goodbye for someone who always dreamed of space.ā

š¼ Your Pet Could Be a Star: Submit Now for Lake Humaneās 2026 Calendar
The Lake Humane Society has launched its 2026 Pet Calendar campaign, inviting Lake County pet owners to feature their furry (or feathered) friends while supporting animal rescue efforts.
Each photo entry will appear in the calendar, with 12 pets selected as monthly features. Proceeds will fund the shelterās mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome animals, and provide for wellness equipment, shelter supplies, and outreach efforts.
Local businesses ā including Mission Empawthy, The Junkluggers, and Harley-Davidson ā have joined as sponsors and photo contest judges. The campaign welcomes all kinds of pets; even a chinchilla entry has made the cut.
An initial run of 250 calendars will be printed and shipped directly to supporters. Organizers hope to grow the campaign in future years while increasing visibility for adoptable pets and community engagement.

ā¾ Ortiz Dominates as Guardians Edge Athletics 4-2
Luis Ortiz led the Cleveland Guardians to a 4-2 win over the Oakland Athletics on Saturday night with six dominant, scoreless innings. The right-hander struck out 10 and allowed only two hits, bouncing back after two rough outings.
Cleveland's offense came alive in the second inning with four quick runs. Bo Naylor and Johnathan RodrĆguez hit back-to-back RBI doubles, while Steven Kwan and JosĆ© RamĆrez each added run-scoring singles. RamĆrezās hit marked his 900th career RBI.
