ā¾ Offensive Woes Continue for Guardians in Second Straight Shutout Loss
The Cleveland Guardians were stifled offensively for a second straight night, falling 5-0 to the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday as Sonny Gray delivered a near-flawless performance on the mound.
Cleveland managed just one hit in the entire game ā a fifth-inning single by Nolan Jones ā as Gray cruised through nine innings with a season-high 11 strikeouts. The Guardians struggled to make solid contact all night, with Gray needing only 89 pitches to complete his shutout, the first he's thrown since 2015.
Luis Ortiz took the loss for Cleveland, giving up back-to-back home runs in the third inning. Pedro PagĆ©s led off the frame with a solo shot, snapping a 24-inning scoring drought for St. Louis. Alec Burleson followed with a two-run homer, and Nolan Arenado later drove in two more runs to round out the Cardinalsā offense.
The Guardians, coming off a 6-0 loss to Toronto on Thursday, were shut out for the second straight game. Their bats have now gone 18 consecutive innings without a run. The absence of star third baseman JosĆ© RamĆrez, who sat out with a bruised right forearm, was felt throughout the lineup.
Cleveland will look to regroup quickly, as they continue their series against St. Louis. Right-hander Slade Cecconi is scheduled to take the mound next, hoping to help the Guardians avoid a three-game skid.

ā¾ Whitecaps Outslug Captains 8-4 Behind Power Surge
The West Michigan Whitecaps rallied past the Lake County Captains on Friday night, taking an 8-4 victory fueled by timely home runs and a steady climb in momentum after the third inning.
Despite Lake County striking first with a solo home run from Christian Knapczyk in the third inning, the lead was short-lived. West Michigan erupted in the top of the fourth, with back-to-back home runs by Austin Murr and Peyton Graham, both with two outs. Murr's two-run blast gave the Whitecaps the lead, and Graham added a solo shot moments later, swinging the momentum sharply in West Michiganās favor.
Knapczyk continued to lead the Captainsā efforts with a game-tying RBI double in the bottom of the fourth, briefly knotting the game at 3-3. But the Whitecaps responded in the top of the fifth when Kevin McGonigle homered to left, reclaiming the lead.
Lake Countyās defense faltered in the sixth, allowing West Michigan to extend the lead on a two-out fielding error. The Whitecaps continued to pile on runs in the seventh with a key RBI single from John Peck, stretching the advantage to 6-3.
West Michiganās bats remained relentless, adding insurance runs late and sealing a convincing 8-4 win.
Lake County starter Matt Wilkinson was tagged with the loss, dropping to 2-8 on the season after surrendering four runs over 4.2 innings.
