🔥 Concord Homeowner Escapes Fire in House Without Smoke Alarms
A Concord Township homeowner narrowly avoided injury early June 29 when a fire broke out at his residence on Prouty Road. Fire crews responded at approximately 4:20 a.m. and arrived to find visible flames at 10385 Prouty Road.
The sole occupant, awakened by heat, escaped the home and called 911. Concord firefighters quickly brought the fire under control within 20 minutes. The home, which was under renovation, did not have working smoke detectors.
Fairport Harbor EMS evaluated the homeowner at the scene. Additional aid came from fire departments in Painesville City, Painesville Township, and Mentor. The Lake County Sheriff’s Department handled traffic, closing Prouty Road for about two hours.
The fire is believed to be accidental, but an investigation is ongoing. Officials are urging residents to check their smoke alarms and take advantage of Concord Township’s free smoke detector program, offered in partnership with the American Red Cross.
For more information, residents can contact the Concord Township Fire Department.

🏘️ Should Only One Spouse Be on the Mortgage? Pros and Cons Explained
When married couples buy a home, it might seem natural to apply for a mortgage together. However, there are plenty of situations where it makes more sense for just one spouse to be on the mortgage—whether due to credit, debt, income stability, or long-term planning goals.
While this approach can offer financial and legal advantages, it also comes with trade-offs that can affect loan size, homeownership rights, and refinancing options. Here’s what you should know if you’re considering applying for a mortgage with just one name on the loan.
Why You Might Apply Without Your Spouse
In some cases, excluding a spouse from the mortgage application can strengthen the overall financial profile and improve loan terms. This is especially helpful if one partner has:
Low credit: Lenders base decisions on the lower of two credit scores. A poor score from one spouse could result in higher rates—or outright denial.
High debt: Student loans, back taxes, or legal judgments can hurt loan eligibility and even expose the home to liens.
Inconsistent income: If one spouse is newly self-employed or in a job with irregular pay, it may be harder to verify their income for mortgage approval.
Estate planning needs: One spouse may want to keep the property in their name only to simplify inheritance, particularly in blended families.
Additionally, applying solo could help you:
Secure a better mortgage rate if the applying spouse has strong credit.
Protect the home if one spouse has unresolved financial liabilities.
But keep in mind: the applying spouse must qualify on their own, with enough income and manageable debt to meet the lender’s standards.
Trade-Offs to Consider
While applying without your spouse can improve approval odds in some situations, there are clear disadvantages.
For example:
Lower borrowing power: Only one income counts, which may reduce the loan amount you qualify for.
Increased debt-to-income ratio: With a single income and existing debts, your DTI may climb too high for loan approval.
Legal responsibility: Only the person on the mortgage is responsible for repayment. The non-borrowing spouse is not liable but can still be added to the title.
If the couple decides to put both names on the title but only one on the mortgage, both become legal owners. However, only the borrower’s credit is affected if payments are missed. On the flip side, if both are on the mortgage but only one is on the title (which is rare), the untitled borrower acts as a guarantor—liable for the loan, but not an owner.

⚾ Arias Injured, Guardians Shut Out in 7-0 Loss to St. Louis
The Cleveland Guardians were blanked 7-0 by the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday, wrapping up a tough homestand with a series sweep at Progressive Field. Over the three-game set, Cleveland was outscored 21-6 and fell two games below .500 for the first time since early April.
Cleveland’s offense never found rhythm, managing just three hits on the day. Starter Logan Allen allowed three runs over six innings, including a crushing three-run homer by Nolan Gorman in the first. Reliever Hunter Gaddis gave up a two-run shot to Victor Scott II in the seventh, and two more runs crossed in the eighth.
The Guardians’ struggles were compounded by an injury to shortstop Gabriel Arias, who exited in the third inning after spraining his left ankle while fielding a ground ball. Though X-rays were negative, he is set to undergo an MRI on Monday.
On the mound, Cleveland pitchers issued eight walks while the offense continued to slump, going 1-5 on the homestand.
Cardinals left-hander Matthew Liberatore held the Guardians scoreless through six innings, helping St. Louis extend its road win streak to six games.

⚾ Late Power Not Enough as Captains Fall Again to Whitecaps
The Lake County Captains came up short in another high-scoring battle against the West Michigan Whitecaps on Sunday, dropping the game 10–8 despite a pair of home runs from Wuilfredo Antunez.
Defensive struggles were once again a major issue for Lake County, with four errors leading to multiple unearned runs. Starter Caden Favors was tagged with the loss after surrendering 11 hits and 7 runs over four innings, falling to 2–7 on the year.
The Captains briefly tied the game in the fourth with a two-run homer by Antunez, his 11th of the season, but West Michigan responded quickly with a four-run fifth inning fueled by sharp hitting and a costly error in right field. Esteban González cut the deficit with a solo shot in the sixth, and Antunez added his second homer of the game in the ninth, giving him 12 on the season.
Despite late offensive sparks, Lake County couldn’t fully erase the early deficit. The loss marks another frustrating outing in a series defined by defensive lapses and missed opportunities.
