ā¾ Guardians Bieber Shines in Rehab Start, Eyes Next Step in Comeback
Shane Bieber Returns to Form in First Game Back from Elbow Surgery
Cleveland Guardians ace Shane Bieber made a strong return to the mound on Tuesday, showing flashes of his dominant form in his first game action in over a month. Pitching for the Guardians' Arizona Complex League affiliate, Bieber delivered two scoreless innings against Dodgers prospects at Goodyear Ballpark, striking out five of the eight batters he faced while allowing just one hit and one walk.
This outing marked a significant step in Bieberās recovery from reconstructive elbow surgery. He had previously been sidelined since May 31, when he pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings against Texas Rangers prospects. A scheduled rehab start on June 6 in Akron was scratched due to renewed elbow soreness, delaying his comeback.
Now, with a successful performance under his belt, Bieberās next appearance could come at the Triple-A or Double-A level, depending on how he responds physically to Tuesdayās game. A start with either Columbus or Akron next week is being considered as he progresses in his rehab assignment.
As the Guardians continue their playoff push, a healthy Bieber could prove crucial in the second half of the season.
