šŸ· Mentor's Storybook Bench Gala to Celebrate Local Art with Wine, Music, and Auction

City of Mentor

The City of Mentor and the Mentor Community Arts Commission are hosting the Storybook Bench Project Gala & Auction on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, from 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM at Springbrook Gardenhouse.

The event celebrates five artist-designed storybook benches now featured along the accessible walking path at Springbrook Gardens Park. Attendees can meet the local artists behind each bench, enjoy wine tastings from a local winery, sample hors d’oeuvres, and listen to live music by Sam Hess.

Guests will also take part in a hands-on art activity and have the opportunity to bid in an auction featuring smaller artworks and the benches themselves, each valued at $3,500. Proceeds will support future Arts Commission programs.

Tickets are $30 per person or $160 for a table of six. For tickets or information, contact the Wildwood Cultural Center at (440) 974-5735.

Springbrook Gardenhouse is located at 6776 Heisley Road in Mentor.

šŸ“° Lake County Launches VISION 2050: First Comprehensive Plan in 60+ Years

Lake County has introduced VISION 2050, its first comprehensive plan in over 60 years, designed to guide development and sustainability efforts through mid-century. Spearheaded by the Board of Commissioners, the Planning Commission, and consulting firm Envision, the initiative responds to the region’s changing needs with a long-term, strategic framework.

The plan focuses on key areas such as economic development, housing, transportation, agriculture, parks, education, and environmental preservation. It also highlights the importance of natural assets like Lake Erie, the Grand and Chagrin Rivers, and Mentor Marsh.

VISION 2050 is built on community engagement and cooperation with local municipalities, ensuring it reflects the county’s diverse voices. Public feedback will be gathered at local fairs and festivals in the coming months, with an online survey also available.

For questions or to get involved, contact David Radachy at 440-350-2740 or email [email protected]. More information and the survey can be accessed at https://app.maptionnaire.com/p/8z3392kfp2sa.

šŸ“° Mentor’s Birthright Lake Joins OhioHealth Network as New Donor Milk Drop Site

Birthright Lake, Inc. has become Lake County’s first official donor milk drop-off site through a new partnership with the OhioHealth Mothers’ Milk Bank. The Mentor location is the 36th site in Ohio, expanding access to donor milk for infants in need.

Milk from approved donors is stored in a freezer—donated by Fredon Corp.—and transported at no cost to OhioHealth’s central facility in Whitehall for pasteurization and distribution to hospitals and NICUs across North America.

In 2024, the milk bank distributed over 469,000 ounces to 11 states. One ounce can feed a premature infant for up to three days.

Interested donors must complete a screening process, including a phone interview, medical history, physician approval, and a blood test. Appointments for drop-off are scheduled after approval.

A community grand opening will be held at 9 a.m. on July 30 at Birthright Lake, 7237 Industrial Park Blvd., Mentor.

To start the process, contact [email protected] or call 614-566-0630.

šŸ“Š Mortgage Strategy for Couples: Avoiding the Pitfalls of Mixed Credit Scores

Buying a home with a partner is often seen as a smart financial move—but when one spouse has a low credit score, it can come with a hefty price tag. A new analysis by the Mortgage Research Network reveals that a partner with a credit score under 640 could add an average of $437 per month to a couple’s housing costs. Over a typical 12-year homeownership span, that adds up to nearly $63,000.

This financial burden isn’t limited to high-cost cities. In San Jose, the monthly difference exceeds $1,000, while buyers in more affordable markets like Memphis or Detroit still face payment increases of 24% to over 30%—even if the actual dollar amount is smaller. In these areas, even a $200 to $300 difference can significantly impact a household budget.

Why does one low score matter so much? Mortgage lenders view credit scores as indicators of risk. If one partner’s score is poor, lenders may charge a higher interest rate, require private mortgage insurance (PMI), or increase homeowners insurance premiums. In community property states like California, Texas, and Arizona, even a non-borrowing spouse’s credit profile can still influence loan terms.

How Couples Can Manage the Credit Gap

If one partner’s credit is holding you back, there are strategies that can reduce long-term costs:

  • Apply solo: If the higher-credit partner qualifies alone, it may lead to better loan terms.

  • Consider flexible loans: FHA, VA, and USDA loans have more forgiving credit requirements.

  • Delay the purchase: Boosting a low score by even 20–40 points can dramatically improve affordability.

  • Plan to refinance: Buy now, then refinance when credit improves.

  • Seek credit counseling: A professional can offer guidance and create a credit repair plan.

The Takeaway

A low credit score doesn’t have to derail your homeownership plans, but it can drive up costs if left unaddressed. Couples should explore options that protect their finances—whether that means applying individually, using more flexible loan programs, or taking time to build credit before buying.

⚾ Fry, Williams Lead Guardians to 8-2 Win and Series Victory Over Athletics

Guardians Take Series Over Athletics Behind Fry and Williams

The Cleveland Guardians closed out their weekend series with an 8-2 win over the Oakland Athletics on Sunday at Progressive Field.

David Fry led the way with a career-high four RBIs, highlighted by a three-run double in the fourth inning. Gavin Williams was dominant on the mound, striking out 11 and allowing just one run across seven innings, earning his first win since June 1.

Angel MartĆnez added three hits, including a solo homer in the seventh, as Cleveland continued its hot streak with eight wins in its last ten games following a ten-game skid.

Oakland’s Nick Kurtz hit two doubles, but the A’s dropped their ninth game in ten tries at Cleveland. Starter Jeffrey Springs gave up five runs on nine hits in four innings, ending his two-game win streak.

With the win, the Guardians clinched the season series 4-2 — their fourth straight over the Athletics franchise, a streak that dates back to 1956.

Cleveland now prepares to host Baltimore, while Oakland heads to Texas for a three-game road series.

⚾ Captains Storm Back to Top TinCaps 7–5 in Series Finale

The Lake County Captains came from behind to defeat the Fort Wayne TinCaps 7–5 on Sunday, capping a back-and-forth contest with a steady offensive surge.

Lake County jumped out to a 2–0 lead with RBI hits from Ralphy Velazquez and Kevin Rivas, but Fort Wayne responded with five unanswered runs, including a two-run homer from Leo De Vries and an RBI double by Ryan Jackson.

The Captains clawed back starting in the fifth, as Alfonsin Rosario hit his 15th home run of the season. Jose Devers followed with a two-run double to cut the deficit to one. A fielder’s choice in the sixth tied the game, and a wild pitch in the seventh allowed Jacob Cozart to score the go-ahead run. Devers added an RBI single in the eighth for insurance.

Dwayne Matos picked up the win in relief despite allowing three runs in 3.1 innings. Robert Wegielnik closed it out for his fourth save of the year.
