📊 Mentor's Jobless Rate Edges Up to 4.3%, Still Among Ohio’s Lowest

City of Mentor

Mentor’s Unemployment Rate Rises Slightly to 4.3% in June

The City of Mentor experienced a modest uptick in unemployment for June 2025, with the rate increasing by 0.1% to 4.3%. While slightly higher than the 4.0% recorded in June 2024, the city continues to maintain one of the lowest unemployment rates among large cities in Ohio.

Lake County also saw a small increase, with unemployment rising by 0.2% to 4.6%. This remains below the statewide average, which climbed to 5.1%—a 0.4% increase over the same time last year.

Mentor's civilian labor force grew by 1,100 people over the past year, reaching a total of 26,500, suggesting continued economic activity despite the slight increase in joblessness.

Among Ohio cities with populations of 50,000 or more, Lakewood holds the lowest unemployment rate at 4.0%, followed by Mentor at 4.3%. Parma and Cuyahoga Falls are tied at 4.7%, with Columbus, Kettering, and Cleveland Heights close behind at 4.8%.

These figures come from the Ohio Department of Job & Family Services’ June 2025 Civilian Labor Force Estimates.

☕ Wellness Wednesday: Cheers to Drinks that Ease Pain

Most pain in the body stems from inflammation and the body’s inflammatory response. Hydration is vital for flushing toxins out of your body, helping fight inflammation, which is even more of a reason to drink at least 64 ounces of water a day. Besides water, there are a few other beverages that can help with this and therefore reduce pain.

People with peripheral neuropathy often experience pain in their hands and feet. Studies have shown that cherry juice has anthocyanin pigments which help with this type of pain. The sugar in juice can actually have the opposite effect so be sure to find a sugar-free brand or better yet, try unsweetened tart cherry juice. It is best to drink 8 ounces each day for the best results.

Scientists have compared the action of ginger to ibuprofen. The most efficient way to get your daily dose of ginger is by making it into tea. Boil four glasses of water and add two tablespoons of fresh, grated ginger. Let it set for a few minutes and then strain the water to remove the pieces of ginger. Slowly drink throughout the morning. Alternatively, you can add a teaspoon of grated ginger to your regular tea.

Smoothies are a great way to mix various healthy foods into a delicious drink. Leafy greens such as kale, spinach, and parsley are known for their anti-inflammatory properties and are the perfect addition to smoothies. Add in some turmeric, ginger, cinnamon and cloves for additional pain-relief properties.

Red wine has a compound in it called resveratrol, which has well-established anti-inflammatory effects. Some studies show wine consumption is associated with a reduced risk of knee osteo-arthritis, and moderate drinking is also associated with a reduced risk of rheumatoid arthritis. Some experts question the strength of these studies and argue it’s hard to distinguish confounding factors in this research, but if you do enjoy an occasional glass of red wine, drink it in moderation. The general recommendation is one drink a day for women, two for men. Any more than that squanders any benefit and can actually promote inflammation.

⚾ Cleveland Hits .500 Mark After Win Over Slumping Orioles

The Cleveland Guardians kept their strong post-All-Star form rolling with a 6-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles Tuesday night at Progressive Field. Now 4-1 since the break, Cleveland has won 10 of its last 12 games, climbing back to a 50-50 record after a 10-game skid.

José Ramírez opened the scoring with a solo home run in the first inning—his 21st of the season and seventh in 12 games. Angel Martínez led the offense with three hits, while Kyle Manzardo and Bryan Rocchio each drove in two runs. Rocchio added an insurance run in the seventh with a sacrifice bunt that scored Nolan Jones.

Joey Cantillo pitched five strong innings, allowing just two hits and one run while striking out five. He didn’t allow a hit until the fifth inning when he started to struggle some. Emmanuel Clase closed the game with his 22nd save.

Baltimore’s Ramón Laureano homered in the sixth, but the Orioles struggled again, losing for the fourth time in five games. Cleveland, meanwhile, has homered in 12 straight games and hit 21 total over that stretch—tied for most in MLB since July 7.

⚾ Bieber Shines in Rehab Start, Cozart’s Bat Leads Captains to Victory

The Lake County Captains cruised to a 7-2 victory over the Lansing Lugnuts last night, powered by strong pitching performances and a game-changing grand slam.

On a rehab assignment from Cleveland, pitcher Shane Bieber made a notable impact in his start for Lake County. Bieber pitched three innings, allowing just two hits and one earned run while striking out four batters. He was followed by Michael Kennedy, who provided stability in relief. Kennedy threw four effective innings, giving up only two hits and one run while recording two strikeouts.

Lansing opened the scoring in the third inning with a sacrifice fly that brought Davis Diaz home. But the tide quickly turned in the bottom of the fourth when Lake County catcher Jacob Cozart launched a grand slam to right field, giving the Captains a commanding 4-1 lead.

Lansing trimmed the deficit slightly in the fifth with an RBI single by Diaz, but Lake County’s offense stayed hot. The Captains tacked on two more runs in the seventh with RBI singles from Christian Knapczyk and Ralphy Velazquez. In the eighth, Cozart struck again, this time with an RBI double that brought in the final run of the game.

With this win, Lake County showcased both big-league talent on the mend and a roster ready to compete, as they continue their strong stretch of play.
