🄵 Heat Index Near 104°F Triggers Weather Alert for Thursday

Extreme Heat Prompts HEAT ADVISORY for Thursday; Storms Return by Weekend

Northeast Ohio is bracing for an intense bout of summer heat on Thursday, potentially dangerous conditions. Daytime highs are expected to climb into the low to mid-90s, with the humidity pushing the heat index as high as 104 degrees. The day may also bring occasional hazy skies, adding to the discomfort.

No rain is expected Thursday to provide relief, and overnight temperatures will remain unseasonably warm. By Thursday morning, temperatures will only drop into the upper 60s and low 70s — significantly warmer than previous nights.

After Thursday's dry spell, wet weather will make a comeback starting Friday. A slow-moving cold front is expected to linger near the region from Friday through Sunday, becoming a key driver of periodic showers and thunderstorms throughout the weekend.

While rain isn’t expected to be continuous, storms could pop up at any time during the weekend. Along with the unsettled weather, the air will remain muggy, and daytime highs will settle in the low to mid-80s.

šŸ‘® Expanded Officer Presence Planned for Mentor School Buildings

Mentor Schools and the City of Mentor have approved a revised Student Resource Officer (SRO) Program that will take effect in the 2025-26 school year. Under the new plan, part-time officers will be hired as city employees, with their salaries reimbursed by the school district. These officers will be assigned to various school buildings, beginning with four—Mentor Shore and Mentor Memorial middle schools, as well as Ridge and Bellflower elementary schools—in the upcoming school year.

Additional schools, including Orchard Hollow, Hopkins, Morton, and Fairfax elementaries, are scheduled to receive officers in the following years. Ultimately, every school in the district is expected to have a dedicated officer on-site. The goal of the initiative is to enhance school safety while fostering positive relationships between students, staff, and law enforcement.

🐶 Pet Food Powerhouses: Four CPG Giants Control Market Across All Tiers

Four CPG Giants Hold Sway Over Entire Pet Food Market Spectrum

Despite a surge in boutique and start-up pet food brands, four major consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies—Mars, NestlĆ©, General Mills, and Colgate-Palmolive—continue to dominate the market across all price points, from economy kibble to premium wet food. Mars PetCare and NestlĆ© Purina lead the field in market share, according to Cascadia Capital’s Summer 2025 Pet Industry Overview.

Nestlé’s Lead in Cat Food

NestlƩ commands a strong position in cat food through Friskies, Fancy Feast, and Purina Pro Plan. It holds 56.9% of the economy dry segment and 76.4% of economy wet. In the mid-priced wet category, Mars edges ahead with 30.1%. Colgate-Palmolive leads in premium dry cat food with 28.4%, ahead of both Purina and Mars.

The cat food market is sizable, with premium wet leading at $4.9 billion, followed by premium dry at $3.1 billion. Economy and mid-priced formats also maintain solid market value.

Mars and NestlƩ Drive Dog Food Sales

In dog food, Mars and NestlƩ dominate economy and mid-priced tiers. Mars holds 38.9% of the economy dry market and 64.7% of economy wet, while NestlƩ commands 33.2% and 48.2% in economy dry and mid-priced dry respectively. However, in the $12.3 billion premium dry segment, neither company leads, with 40.6% of the market going to other brands.

Premium Segments Offer Growth for Smaller Brands

While major CPG firms maintain an edge through scale and distribution, premium segments offer room for emerging players. Brands like Freshpet are gaining ground in premium wet dog food. In response, large firms are investing in fresh formats. Colgate-Palmolive’s Hill’s Pet Nutrition recently acquired Australia’s Prime100, while Mars and General Mills have launched their own fresh offerings.

Cascadia’s report highlights that despite big-brand dominance, shifting consumer preferences toward fresh, science-based, and high-quality pet food continue to open doors for smaller innovators.

⚾ Cleveland Continues Hot Streak, Tops Baltimore in Tight 3-2 Finish

The Cleveland Guardians stayed hot on Wednesday night, pulling off a 3-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles thanks to a go-ahead single from Steven Kwan in the eighth inning.

With two outs and Bo Naylor on second, Kwan lined a pitch into left field. Although the ball was fielded cleanly, the throw home missed the mark, allowing Naylor to score.

Hunter Gaddis tossed a perfect eighth for the win, and Emmanuel Clase earned his 23rd save. The Guardians have now won 11 of their last 13 games, rebounding from a 10-game losing streak and climbing back into the AL wild-card race.

Baltimore tied the game in the sixth on a solo homer by Jackson Holliday. Ryan O’Hearn had earlier driven in a run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth.

Cleveland’s two runs came in the fourth on a single from Kyle Manzardo that scored Kwan and JosĆ© RamĆrez. Orioles starter Zach Eflin, returning from injury, retired the first nine batters and pitched five innings, giving up only those two runs.

Colin Selby took the loss for a second straight game as the Orioles dropped their seventh in eight contests. The series wraps Thursday with Cleveland aiming for a sweep.

⚾ Captains Rally Past Lugnuts 4-2 Behind Velazquez’s Homer and Stellar Bullpen

The Lake County Captains secured a 4-2 victory over the Lansing Lugnuts on Wednesday, thanks to a strong combination of pitching and timely offense.

Starting pitcher Sean Matson delivered a solid outing for Lake County, striking out six over four innings while allowing just two hits. His only blemish came in the fourth inning, when Lansing's Jared Dickey launched a two-run home run to right field, giving the visitors a brief 2-0 lead.

Lake County responded in the bottom of the sixth, as Ralphy Velazquez tied the game with a two-run homer of his own, sending the ball over the right-center field fence and bringing Alfonsin Rosario home.

The Captains took the lead in the seventh after a ground ball led to a fielder’s choice. A misplay by the Lugnuts' second baseman allowed two more runs to score, giving Lake County the advantage they wouldn’t relinquish.

Reliever Izaak Martinez kept Lansing in check with three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. Jack Jasiak then closed the door with two clean frames, earning his 10th save of the season.
