🦌 Mentor Residents Asked to Help Guide 2025 Deer Management Efforts

City of Mentor

White-tailed deer significantly shape Mentor’s natural environment—but overpopulation can lead to accidents and ecological strain. That’s why the City of Mentor, in partnership with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), is asking residents to participate in the 2025 Deer Population Survey.

Since 2012, Mentor’s deer management program has worked to reduce vehicle collisions, property damage, and improve herd health. It uses data from road and vegetation surveys, aerial counts, and camera monitoring. Just as important is public input.

By completing this brief survey, residents provide insight into how deer activity affects their area—whether through overpopulation, property damage, or lack of deer presence. Your feedback helps create a well-informed, balanced management approach.

🍒 Rainy Day Recipe Spotlight: Cherry Lemon Shortcake Cobbler

Photo by Alex Lau, Food Styling by Sue Li

Why choose between a fruit cobbler and a classic shortcake when you can enjoy the best of both in one comforting dessert? This cherry lemon shortcake cobbler blends the rich, jammy goodness of a cobbler with the light, buttery tenderness of cream biscuits.

At the heart of the dish is a vibrant filling of cherries brightened with a touch of lemon—tart, juicy, and just sweet enough. Instead of the typical cobbler topping, this version features fluffy, shortcake-style cream biscuits that bake up golden on top and soak in the syrupy fruit below without losing their delicate texture.

Perfect for a cozy, rainy day, this dessert is easy to assemble and even better served warm with a spoonful of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

⚾ Late Rally Falls Short as Captains Drop 5-3 Decision

The Lake County Captains came up short Friday night in a 5-3 loss to the Lansing Lugnuts at Classic Auto Group Park.

Starting pitcher Matt Wilkinson struggled early, giving up three runs on five hits across just three innings. He recorded two strikeouts and one walk, dropping to 3-9 on the season with a 5.03 ERA.

Lansing took control in the third inning, plating three runs with a series of productive at-bats, including a Tommy White RBI single, a Nate Nankil sacrifice fly, and a Ryan Lasko groundout that scored T.J. Schofield-Sam.

The Captains’ bullpen delivered a strong performance to keep the game within reach. Alonzo Richardson stood out, pitching four scoreless innings of relief while allowing just one hit.

However, the Lugnuts tacked on two more runs in the eighth, including another RBI from Lasko and a run-scoring single by Sahid Valenzuela.

Lake County finally answered in the bottom of the eighth when Ralphy Velazquez blasted a three-run homer—his 14th of the season—bringing home Christian Knapczyk and Alfonsin Rosario. But the rally stopped there, and the Captains couldn’t close the gap in the ninth.

Lake County drops to 47-51 on the season.

⚾ Rain Washes Out Guardians-Royals Opener, Doubleheader Set for Saturday

Rain Postpones Guardians-Royals; Doubleheader Scheduled for Saturday

Friday night's opener between the Cleveland Guardians and Kansas City Royals was postponed due to heavy rain, delaying the start of their three-game weekend series. The matchup will now be played as part of a split doubleheader on Saturday.

In the rescheduled format, game one will be at 2:40pm EST. Cleveland will send Tanner Bibee to the mound for the afternoon game, while Kansas City counters with Kris Bubic. The evening contest will start at 7:15pm EST and will be nationally televised on FOX. The starting pitchers will feature Joey Cantillo for the Guardians and Noah Cameron taking the ball for the Royals.

The Guardians enter the series on a hot streak, having won seven of their last nine games, including a recent series victory over the Baltimore Orioles. Their record now stands at an even 51-51. The Royals, not far behind, come in with a 50-53 mark after winning three of their last four games.

Both teams look to build momentum as they navigate the second half of the season and push toward postseason contention.
