šŸ“° Spotted Lanternflies Pose Growing Threat—Here’s How You Can Help

Spotted Lanternfly

Spotted Lanternfly at rest

They may be striking in appearance, but Spotted Lanternflies are anything but harmless. These invasive insects pose a serious threat to Northeast Ohio’s trees, crops, and ecosystems—and local residents are being urged to take action.

The Spotted Lanternfly, native to Asia, has rapidly spread across parts of the U.S. and is known for damaging a wide range of plants, including grapevines, fruit trees, and hardwoods. Once established, they can be incredibly difficult to eliminate.

Experts are encouraging the public to help stop the spread by being vigilant. If you see one, don’t hesitate—squash it immediately. Every kill counts in the fight to protect our environment.

In addition to taking action on the spot, residents can stay informed and learn how to identify the pest by visiting the USDA’s Spotted Lanternfly resource page at aphis.usda.gov. Together, we can slow the spread and safeguard the health of our region’s trees and crops.

šŸ¤– Mentor Library Offers Free Ozobot Coding Program for Kids Aug. 14

Young tech enthusiasts will have a chance to dive into the world of coding through hands-on play with Ozobots at the Mentor Public Library. The free program, geared toward children ages 8 to 12, will take place at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, August 14, at the library’s Main Branch, located at 8215 Mentor Avenue.

Ozobots are small, interactive robots designed to teach the fundamentals of computer programming in a fun and engaging way. Through color-coded paths and simple commands, kids can explore basic coding concepts while interacting directly with the robots.

The program is free, but space is limited and registration is required. Families can reserve a spot starting July 31 by visiting www.mentorpl.org or calling 440-255-8811, ext. 3.

ā›“ļø New Cleveland Water Taxi Offers Daily River Transit Starting July 29

Courtesy: WJW

In the spirit of discovery around our area… Getting around downtown Cleveland is about to get easier—and a lot more scenic. Starting July 29, the Cleveland Water Taxi, operated by the team behind the Cleveland Tiki Barge, will launch on the Cuyahoga River, offering a daily hop-on, hop-off service called the Harbor Hopper.

The 50-passenger boat will operate from the Tiki Barge dock on the Flats West Bank, running seven days a week from 10:30 a.m. to midnight. Unlike the Metroparks’ weekend-only eLCee2 Water Taxi, the Harbor Hopper will travel farther downriver and serve more destinations.

Initial stops include Flats East Bank, Flats West Bank, BrewDog Cleveland, and Collision Bend Brewing Company. Additional locations—such as North Coast Harbor, the Port of Cleveland, Edgewater Beach, and Wendy Park—are being considered for future expansion.

Fares begin at $10 for a single ride, with season passes available for $199. Riders can track the taxi in real time using the new Destination Cleveland mobile app, making it easy to plan stops around downtown.

The idea came from local entrepreneur Brittany Orlando, who saw how difficult it was for visitors to navigate the city without relying on pricey rideshares or limited parking. With flexible hours during major events and conventions, the Harbor Hopper is designed to be both convenient and enjoyable for residents and tourists alike.

⚾ Kwan’s Career-Long Blast Helps Guardians Split Twin Bill in Kansas City

The Cleveland Guardians returned to the .500 mark on Saturday after splitting a doubleheader with the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium, keeping their postseason hopes alive with just days remaining before the MLB Trade Deadline.

After falling 5–3 in Game 1 on a walk-off home run in the 10th inning, the Guardians bounced back in the nightcap with a 6–4 win, powered by patient at-bats and a career-long home run from Steven Kwan.

The Guardians (52–52) remain in second place in the AL Central, trailing the division-leading Tigers by seven games and sitting three games back of the final American League Wild Card spot. With 58 games left in the regular season and the trade deadline looming Thursday, Cleveland’s front office faces a critical decision—whether to buy, sell, or stand pat.

In Game 1, Gavin Williams delivered a solid start, holding Kansas City to two runs over six innings. Bo Naylor and Kyle Manzardo provided clutch RBIs, putting the Guardians in position for a win, but closer Emmanuel Clase couldn’t preserve the lead in extras.

Game 2 saw a more aggressive offensive approach. The Guardians jumped on Royals starter Kris Bubic early, drawing four straight walks to open the game. Johnathan RodrĆguez delivered a key two-run double, and Kwan followed up with a two-run homer—his longest in the Majors at 431 feet—to seal the scoring.

Cleveland holds a 5–3 edge over Kansas City in their season series and needs just two more wins in their final five matchups to secure the tiebreaker. The Guardians now return home to host the Rockies (27–77) starting Monday.

⚾ Captains Top Lugnuts 5–2 Behind Strong Outing from Humphries

The Lake County Captains secured a solid 5–2 win over the Lansing Lugnuts on Saturday evening, delivering a well-rounded performance at home.

Starting pitcher Jackson Humphries was dominant on the mound, carrying a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Over 5.2 innings, Humphries allowed just one hit and one run while striking out five and walking two. Despite his strong outing, it was reliever Dwayne Matos who picked up the win, improving to 2-0 on the season.

Lake County opened the scoring in the first inning when Christian Knapczyk crossed the plate on a line-drive single by Alfonsin Rosario. The Captains broke the game open in the sixth, starting with a run-scoring single from Nick Mitchell. A wild pitch then allowed Knapczyk to score, followed by a sharp double from Jose Devers that brought Mitchell home and extended the lead to 4–1.

Lansing briefly responded with a solo home run from Ryan Lasko in the seventh, but the Captains padded their lead again in the eighth. Esteban GonzƔlez singled to center, scoring Rosario and putting the game out of reach.

Lake County’s record on the season now stands at 51-44.
