🎵 NashWill Music Fest in Downtown Willoughby - Kick Up Your Heels!

Country Music Fest in Downtown Willoughby - Aug 2 at 1-9pm

Downtown Willoughby will transform into a mini Nashville on Saturday, August 2, for NashWill 2025, a free, public country music festival running from 1 to 9 p.m. The event will feature live music at 15 venues, line dancing, vendors, tastings, and a mechanical bull, with Second Street closed to traffic for the celebration.

One of the main attractions is Dee’s Country Kickers, led by longtime instructor Dee Blansett, who will offer free line dancing classes at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. A country music DJ will play between sessions, and a live performance by the Kickers will take place later in the day (time TBA).

At Wes Point Park, guests can test their skills on a mechanical bull from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. The cost is $8 per ride, and a waiver is required. Organizers note the ride requires coordination, grip, and balance—perfect for those seeking a challenge.

Wristbands, available for $8 at Wes Point Park, offer discounts at participating businesses and five entries into a Cleveland Guardians ticket giveaway, with the drawing at 5:30 p.m.

Visitors can also shop Western-themed vendors, enjoy food and drink specials, and explore Downtown Willoughby’s bars and restaurants.

NashWill 2025 is presented by the Downtown Willoughby Bar & Restaurant Association, Willoughby Arts Collaborative, and The City of Willoughby.

📰 NAMI Lake County to Lead Regional Family Support Program in Northeast Ohio

NAMI Lake County has been selected by the Ohio Department of Children and Youth as the regional hub for the Family Support Specialist Program (FSSP), now serving families in Lake, Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, and Geauga counties.

The free program connects families involved in two or more child-serving systems—such as mental health, child welfare, juvenile justice, or substance use treatment—with trained peer specialists. These professionals offer emotional support, guidance, and advocacy based on personal experience.

Services include:

  • One-on-one mentoring

  • Navigation through service systems

  • Support at court, school, and planning meetings

  • Crisis assistance and parental rights education

NAMI’s designation expands access to underserved families and builds on its longstanding mission to provide mental health advocacy and peer-based support. Specialists are available in person, virtually, or at home.

To learn more or determine eligibility, visit www.namilakecountyohio.org/fssp or call 440-639-1200. Referrals are accepted from professionals and agencies across the four-county region.

⚾ Captains Lose Extra-Inning Thriller to Timber Rattlers, 5-4

In a closely contested matchup that extended into extra innings, the Lake County Captains fell short against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, losing 5-4 in 10 innings on Thursday night.

The Captains struck first in the opening frame when Alfonsin Rosario launched his 16th home run of the season, giving Lake County an early 1-0 lead. However, Wisconsin responded in the fourth inning, capitalizing on a series of base hits to plate three runs and seize control.

Lake County battled back in the seventh, tying the game at 3-3 with a timely RBI double from Jose Devers and a sacrifice fly by Juan Benjamin. The game remained deadlocked until the 10th inning.

The Captains briefly regained the lead in the top half of the extra frame. Juan Benjamin crossed home on a fly ball, aided by a fielding miscue in left field. But Wisconsin rallied in the bottom of the inning. After tying the game with a line drive single, the Timber Rattlers walked it off on a base hit that brought home the decisive run.

Reliever Izaak Martinez, who came into the game in the ninth, took the loss for Lake County. In his 1.2 innings of work, he allowed two runs—one of them unearned—on three hits and one walk, while striking out two. The defeat dropped his season record to 4-1 with a 2.79 ERA.

⚾ Cleveland Trades Sewald, Stays Committed to Kwan as Deadline Passes

The Cleveland Guardians continued adjusting their roster ahead of the 2025 MLB trade deadline, sending injured reliever Paul Sewald to the Detroit Tigers for a player to be named later or cash. The deal came shortly after Cleveland traded former Cy Young winner Shane Bieber to Toronto.

Sewald, currently on the injured list with a shoulder issue, likely won’t join Detroit’s bullpen for several weeks. He signed a one-year contract with Cleveland in the offseason and pitched only 15 1/3 innings with a 4.70 ERA before the trade.

The Guardians’ trade approach shifted over recent weeks. A 10-game losing streak hinted they might become sellers, but an 11–2 rebound run pulled them back into playoff contention and changed the calculus. That momentum, however, was disrupted by news that closer Emmanuel Clase and pitcher Luis Ortiz were placed on paid leave due to MLB’s ongoing gambling investigation.

That left Cleveland’s front office with tough choices, including whether to move standout left fielder Steven Kwan. Despite interest from contenders like Houston and Philadelphia, the team chose to keep the two-time All-Star. Reportedly, no team met Cleveland’s high asking price before the deadline passed.

Kwan remains a core player. He’s hitting .286 with a .758 OPS, nine home runs, and 53 runs scored, despite managing a sore wrist since mid-May. Defensively, his three Gold Gloves and league-leading outfield assists make him among the best in baseball. He’s also admired off the field for his work in the community and remains under team control through 2027.

As the playoff race tightens, Cleveland moves forward with Kwan still in left field and a reshaped bullpen — minus Clase and Sewald — but with postseason hopes still alive.
