📰 Veteran Motorcycle Tour Raises $1.9 Million and Counting, Makes Stop Here

Veterans Ride Through Lake County for Patriot Tour and Fellow Service Members

On August 4, a group of veterans and supporters traveled from Amherst to Painesville as part of the Nation of Patriots 2025 Patriot Tour, a nationwide motorcycle flag relay that raises funds to support veterans in need. The American flag was carried from VFW Post 1662 in Amherst to American Legion Post 336 in Painesville—one of several Ohio stops along the tour’s national route.

Local coordination was led by Marine veteran Bud Crouser, who has organized the event in Northeast Ohio for over a decade. The tour raises money for veterans facing urgent needs such as medical expenses, housing costs, and vehicle payments. All proceeds go directly to assisting veterans.

Upon arrival in Painesville, the riders took part in a flag transfer ceremony. The flag was passed to the next rider, who was scheduled to continue the journey toward Wesleyville, Pennsylvania, on August 5. Organizers expected 30 to 50 motorcycles to depart from Painesville, with additional riders joining along the way, potentially reaching 100 by the time they arrived at the next stop.

The Lake County location was moved this year from a previous venue in Mentor to a veteran-centered facility in Painesville to strengthen community involvement and bring greater awareness to the cause.

Nation of Patriots was established in 2008 and began the Patriot Tour the following year. Since then, the initiative has raised over $1.9 million and assisted more than 590 veteran families nationwide. The 2025 tour began on May 17 in Lafayette, Louisiana, and is scheduled to return there for its conclusion on September 20. Ohio stops on this year’s route include Amherst, Painesville, Perrysburg, and Fremont.

Birding Festival to Celebrate Fall Migration in Lake County, Sept. 19–21

Birders and nature enthusiasts will gather for the 2025 Headlands Birding Festival, taking place September 19–21 at Headlands Beach State Park and surrounding nature sites. The annual event coincides with the peak of fall migration, when hundreds of bird species pass through the Lake Erie region on their way to winter habitats as far as South America.

The Headlands and Mentor Marsh area is known for its exceptional bird diversity, with 352 species documented in Lake County. Open to all ages and skill levels, the festival offers guided walks, expert talks, and interactive programs celebrating the natural spectacle.

The event kicks off Friday evening with a welcome reception at Springbrook Gardenhouse. Attendees will hear from keynote speaker Julie Zickefoose, an Ohio-based naturalist and author, while sampling wines from local wineries.

Saturday includes a birding boat tour along Lake Erie and guided hikes at top birding locations, including Mentor Marsh, Lake Erie Bluffs, and Chagrin River Park. Afternoon presentations will cover bird identification, habitat conservation, and birding technology. From noon to 4 p.m., visitors can enjoy food trucks, nature vendors, and nonprofit booths at Headlands Beach State Park.

The weekend wraps up Sunday morning with a live bird banding demonstration and a flight watch at Lake Erie Bluffs.

The festival is organized by local and regional partners, including Lake Metroparks, Tour Lake County, the City of Mentor, and the Blackbrook Audubon Society, and supported by sponsors such as Verdantas, Ken Ganley Subaru of Wickliffe, and Wild Birds Unlimited.

📰 First Responders Train for Mass Casualty Incidents in Eastlake Drill

From July 15 to 17, first responders from across Northeast Ohio took part in a large-scale emergency training event focused on active threat and mass casualty situations. Hosted at Eastlake North High School, the 2025 Active Threat/Mass Casualty Incident (AT/MCI) Drill brought together around 200 personnel from Lake, Geauga, Ashtabula, and Cuyahoga Counties.

Now in its eighth year, the annual training emphasizes coordinated response efforts between police, fire/rescue, and dispatch teams during high-risk emergencies such as active shooter incidents. The goal is to strengthen inter-agency communication, reduce response times, and improve overall readiness.

Organized by the Lake County AT/MCI Drill Training Group, the event included instruction and support from multiple agencies. Departments from Mentor and Mentor-on-the-Lake played active roles in both participation and drill facilitation.

Inside the New Age of Wellness: What the Latest Health Trends Really Offer

Wellness culture in 2025 is a whirlwind of trends, gadgets, and self-optimization strategies. From ancient healing practices with a modern twist to cutting-edge technology promising mental clarity, today’s top health obsessions are as diverse as they are debated. Here's a closer look at eight of the most talked-about wellness movements, unpacking what they offer and what science actually says.

1. Tuning the Vagus Nerve for Stress Relief
Often dubbed the body’s information superhighway, the vagus nerve is central to functions like digestion and relaxation. Wellness seekers are turning to methods like acupuncture, aromatherapy, and even at-home tools aimed at stimulating the nerve to help reduce stress. While early studies suggest potential benefits in heart rate variability and anxiety management, experts caution that results are far from definitive and urge consultation before experimenting.

2. Cold Plunging for Mood and Focus
Once reserved for elite athletes and wellness gurus, cold plunges have surged into mainstream popularity. Advocates claim the icy immersion boosts energy, improves mood, and even sharpens focus. Community-driven cold plunge clubs are cropping up in major cities, transforming ice baths into social rituals. While some studies support mood-boosting effects, risks like cold shock are real, and medical advice is recommended before diving in.

3. Hyperbaric Oxygen Chambers for Cognitive Health
With high-profile users from the entertainment and sports worlds, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is being marketed for everything from enhanced brain function to reduced inflammation. These pressurized chambers flood the body with oxygen, offering potential benefits for recovery and wellness. Though the treatment is FDA-approved for certain medical conditions, unregulated use poses risks, and experts stress the importance of professional oversight.

4. The High-Protein Lifestyle
Protein-heavy diets are having a major moment, driven by social media and influencers who tout them for muscle building, fat loss, and hormone balance. While protein is undeniably essential, overconsumption—especially in extreme forms—can pose long-term health risks including liver strain and increased cancer risk. Nutritionists advise moderation and caution against turning every meal into a protein experiment.

⚾ Kwan's Clutch Hit Lifts Guardians Over Slumping Mets

The Cleveland Guardians kept their momentum rolling with a 3-2 win over the struggling New York Mets on Tuesday night. Steven Kwan drove in the decisive run with a two-out single in the seventh, lifting Cleveland to its sixth win in seven games.

Trailing 2-0 early, the Guardians tied it in the fourth with RBI singles from Kyle Manzardo and Gabriel Arias. The Mets had jumped ahead with a Pete Alonso sacrifice fly and a Tyrone Taylor RBI single, but were held in check after that.

Cleveland’s defense helped shift the game in the second inning, turning a key double play to escape a bases-loaded jam. From there, Logan Allen and four relievers silenced the Mets, who didn’t record a hit after the fourth. Matt Festa earned the win with a perfect sixth, while Cade Smith picked up his fourth save.

The Guardians have now won five straight over the Mets, while New York has dropped seven of eight and continues to fall behind in the NL East.

⚾ Captains Blank Dragons Behind Hartle's Dominant Start

The Lake County Captains delivered a dominant performance on the road last night, shutting out the Dayton Dragons 6-0. With the win, the Captains continued their solid season, powered by strong pitching and timely hitting.

Starter Josh Hartle improved his record to 9-2 with an impressive outing, tossing five scoreless innings. He allowed just one hit, walked two, and struck out four, lowering his season ERA to 2.60. The Captains’ bullpen followed suit, keeping the Dragons off the board through the final four innings to preserve the shutout.

Lake County got on the board early in the second inning. Esteban González drove in the first run with a double to left, followed by an RBI single from Maick Collado that made it 2-0. The Captains broke the game open in the fifth when Ralphy Velazquez launched a three-run home run to right-center, extending the lead to 5-0.

They added one more insurance run in the ninth as Jaison Chourio singled to center, bringing home another run and sealing the 6-0 win.

The Captains’ all-around performance left no room for a Dragons comeback, marking another standout night in a strong season.
