Mentor CityFest Returns with Two Days of Music, Family Fun, and Fireworks

MENTOR, Ohio — Mentor’s largest summer celebration is back this weekend, offering two full days of free family fun, live music, games, and fireworks at Civic Center Park.

Mentor CityFest kicks off Friday, Aug. 15, from 5 to 11 p.m. with a DJ, food and craft vendors, inflatables, and family activities. The night closes with a headlining concert by Def Leggend, a Def Leppard tribute band.

The festivities continue on Saturday, Aug. 16, beginning at 10 a.m. with the CityFest Parade, marching from Shore Middle School to the amphitheater. The rest of the day features nonstop entertainment, highlighted by the Deepwood Idol singing competition, three thrilling shows from the Cincinnati Circus, and the colorful Color Dash & Walk—a 2.5-mile fun run with seven color zones.

Saturday night wraps up with a performance from Queen Nation, a Queen tribute act, followed by a fireworks show at 10 p.m.

This year’s expanded Kids Zone includes bounce houses, slides, a rock wall, a ninja warrior course, and a zip line. More than 15 food trucks and community vendors will be on site, along with strolling performers and the crowd-favorite Fest Money trivia game.

📰 Yellow Tap Water in Eastlake Deemed Safe After Water Main Break

Eastlake Water Discolored After Main Break, But Officials Say It's Safe

Some Eastlake residents reported yellow tap water Wednesday morning, but Lake County officials confirmed it’s safe to drink.

The Lake County Department of Utilities said the discoloration likely resulted from a water main break around 6 a.m. Crews quickly made repairs, and service was restored by 11 a.m. The temporary disruption stirred up minerals, which may have caused the yellow tint.

Despite the color, officials said the water meets all safety standards and poses no health risks. They emphasized that any situation threatening public safety would result in immediate notification.

Earlier this month, Cleveland’s western suburbs experienced a similar issue. High oxygen levels in Lake Erie caused minerals to dissolve into the water supply entering the Crown Treatment Plant in Westlake, turning the water yellow for some residents.

📰 Ohio Lyme Disease Cases Triple in 2025, Health Officials Urge Tick Safety

The Ohio Department of Health reports a sharp increase in tick-borne illnesses across the state, with nearly 1,300 cases of Lyme disease recorded so far in 2025—almost three times the number seen by this point last year. Additional illnesses in people have also been confirmed, including Rocky Mountain spotted fever (8 cases), anaplasmosis (11 cases), ehrlichiosis (15 cases), and babesiosis (2 cases).

Health officials are urging residents to take precautions when spending time outdoors, especially in areas where ticks are common. Preventive measures include steering clear of wooded and brushy locations with tall grass or leaf litter, walking in the center of trails, and using EPA-registered insect repellents. Clothing and outdoor gear can be treated with 0.5% permethrin for added protection, and wearing light-colored, long-sleeved shirts and pants tucked into socks or boots can help keep ticks from reaching skin.

The Ohio Department of Health also emphasizes the importance of checking for ticks promptly after outdoor activities and following all safety instructions on repellent labels.

🐶😺 Ohio Approves Veterinary Telehealth, Expanding Access to Pet Care

Ohio Legalizes Veterinary Telehealth, Expanding Access to Pet Care Across the State

Ohio has taken a significant step forward in improving access to veterinary care with the legalization of veterinary telehealth. The new law, signed by Governor Mike DeWine on June 30, allows veterinarians to establish a patient-client relationship virtually—mirroring the practices long in place for human healthcare.

Set to take effect at the end of September, the legislation aims to bridge the gap in veterinary access for pet owners in underserved or rural areas, as well as individuals facing transportation barriers or other challenges to in-person visits. Animal shelters without on-site veterinarians are also expected to benefit greatly from the expanded flexibility.

The law outlines clear guidelines for telehealth use. Veterinarians will be allowed to prescribe certain medications remotely for up to 14 days, with one refill permitted. The legislation includes specific protocols to ensure safe and responsible implementation, and it excludes livestock raised for human consumption unless the animal has been examined in person first.

This legislative victory is the result of coordinated advocacy from the Cleveland Animal Protective League and leadership from the Animal Policy Group, along with support from numerous animal welfare and veterinary organizations across the state.

⚾ Rookie Eruption: Marsee’s Big Night Sparks Blowout Win for Miami

Marsee’s Breakout Performance Powers Marlins Past Guardians, 13-4

The Miami Marlins ended a four-game skid in dominant fashion Wednesday night, cruising past the Cleveland Guardians 13-4, led by a career-best showing from rookie Jakob Marsee.

Marsee went 4-for-5 with two home runs, a double, and seven RBIs—each delivered with two outs. He opened the scoring with a three-run homer in the first and later added a two-run blast in the fifth to give Miami a 6-4 lead.

Xavier Edwards began the night with a solo homer, extending his hitting streak to eight games, while Graham Pauley also went deep. Agustín Ramírez capped the scoring with a two-run single in the seventh.

Eury Pérez pitched five innings, allowing four runs on three hits and striking out eight. Cleveland briefly tied the game at 4-4 in the fourth with a three-run homer from Gabriel Arias, but Miami responded swiftly.

In a pivotal sixth inning, Pauley hit a solo homer, Kyle Stowers added an RBI single, and Liam Hicks drove in a run with a ground-rule double. Marsee followed with a two-run double, putting the game out of reach at 11-4.

Marsee entered the night with just one home run and six RBIs in 12 games this season, making his breakout all the more impressive.

⚾ Captains Stun Chiefs with Grand Slam Walk-Off in Wild Ninth

Captains Stun Chiefs with 6-Run Ninth-Inning Comeback

The Lake County Captains pulled off a dramatic comeback Wednesday night, scoring six runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Peoria Chiefs 9-7 at Classic Auto Group Park.

Starter Jackson Humphries gave up two runs on five hits over four innings but struggled with control, walking five. While several pitchers were hit hard, Luis Flores threw a scoreless inning in the ninth and earned the win.

Lake County struck first with an RBI double from Esteban González in the first. Peoria answered in the third with RBI hits from Andrew Sojka and Anyelo Encarnacion to take a 2-1 lead. The Captains tied it in the bottom half with another RBI from González and briefly led 3-2 in the fifth on a groundout by Juan Benjamin.

Peoria surged ahead with two runs in the seventh and three runs in the eighth inning, highlighted by RBI hits from Ian Petrutz and Encarnacion, pushing the score to 7-3.

In the bottom of the ninth, Garrett Howe hit his first home run of the season, sparking the rally. A fielding error allowed another run to score, cutting the lead to 7-5. With the bases loaded, Juan Benjamin crushed a grand slam to right-center, sealing a stunning walk-off victory for the Captains.
