Mentor CityFest Returns with Two Days of Music, Family Fun, and Fireworks
Mentor’s largest summer celebration is back this weekend, offering two full days of free family fun, live music, games, and fireworks at Civic Center Park.
Mentor CityFest kicked off yesterday and with loads of family fun. A DJ, food and craft vendors, inflatables, and family activities were everywhere. The night closed out with an electrifying performance by Def Leggend, a Def Leppard tribute band.
The festivities continue on TODAY, starting at 10 a.m. with the CityFest Parade, marching from Shore Middle School to the amphitheater. The rest of the day features nonstop entertainment, highlighted by the Deepwood Idol singing competition, three thrilling shows from the Cincinnati Circus, and the colorful Color Dash & Walk—a 2.5-mile fun run with seven color zones.
Saturday night wraps up with a performance from Queen Nation, a Queen tribute act, followed by a fireworks show at 10 p.m.
This year’s expanded Kids Zone includes bounce houses, slides, a rock wall, a ninja warrior course, and a zip line. More than 15 food trucks and community vendors will be on site, along with strolling performers and the crowd-favorite Fest Money trivia game.
Admission and parking are free. Some activities require wristbands. Full event details, including maps and volunteer sign-ups, can be found at cityofmentor.com.

⚾ Kwan Records Both Hits in Guardians’ Shutout Loss to Braves
The Cleveland Guardians couldn’t break through against a sharp Atlanta pitching staff Friday night, falling 2-0 at Progressive Field in a quiet offensive showing.
Guardians hitters were limited to just two singles—both by Steven Kwan—as rookie Hurston Waldrep shut them down over six scoreless innings. Waldrep struck out seven and walked two before turning it over to the Braves bullpen, which sealed the combined two-hitter. Cleveland has now been shut out for the 12th time this season.
Joey Cantillo took the loss despite a solid effort. He allowed just one run over four innings, issuing a bases-loaded walk to Nacho Alvarez Jr. in the fourth. That walk came moments after an on-field delay caused by a fan running onto the field and being escorted off by security.
Carlos Hernández gave up a late insurance run in the ninth when Michael Harris II drove in pinch-runner Eli White with a single.
Ronald Acuña Jr. returned to Atlanta’s lineup after a 15-game absence but was held hitless and called out for baserunner interference in the fourth.
With the loss, the Guardians slipped a game behind the Yankees in the AL Wild Card race and are now 7.5 games behind the Tigers in the division.

⚾ Captains Rally Late to Top Chiefs 6-5 in Friday Night Thriller
The Lake County Captains pulled off a thrilling 6-5 comeback win over the Peoria Chiefs on Friday night, showcasing resilience on both the mound and at the plate.
Making a rehab start, veteran left-hander John Means delivered a sharp 2.2 innings, allowing just one hit while striking out three in a scoreless appearance. Things got shaky after his exit, as reliever Sean Matson surrendered five earned runs across 3.2 innings, including a three-run homer in the fourth inning by Peoria’s Josh Kross.
Despite the rough patch, the Captains clawed back from a 5-2 deficit. The offense sparked in the bottom of the sixth with Nick Mitchell launching his first home run of the season, bringing the Captains within one. The following inning, Bennett Thompson leveled the score with a key RBI double.
Lake County completed the comeback in the eighth when Jaison Chourio grounded a single into right field, allowing Mitchell to cross home for the go-ahead run.
Right-hander Jay Driver played a crucial role in securing the win, entering in relief during a tight spot and throwing 2.1 scoreless innings while giving up only one hit and striking out two. With the win, Driver improved to 4-1 on the season.
