⚾ Pederson Walks It Off as Rangers Rally Past Guardians 4-3

The Cleveland Guardians let a late lead slip away in a 4-3 loss to the Texas Rangers on Friday night, falling victim to a ninth-inning rally capped by a walk-off RBI double from Joc Pederson.

Carlos Ramirez gave Cleveland a 3-2 lead in the eighth with a two-run double, turning around what had been a tight pitchers’ duel. The Guardians had previously tied the game in the second inning on C.J. Kayfus’ RBI double, one of the few early hits off Texas starter Nathan Eovaldi.

Eovaldi stifled the Guardians for most of the night, allowing just one run over seven innings while striking out nine. After Cleveland’s early scoring, Eovaldi retired 15 straight batters and left with a 1.73 ERA, now the best among qualified MLB starters.

Cade Smith entered in the ninth to close things out but was unable to hold the lead. Wyatt Langford led off with a deep double and scored the tying run moments later on Corey Seager’s single. Pederson then delivered the decisive blow, driving a double to the gap to end the game.

Despite the loss, Cleveland got a solid start from their bullpen before Smith’s blown save. Offensively, they managed only five hits and struggled to generate late momentum after Ramirez's go-ahead hit.

The Guardians will try to bounce back Saturday, sending left-hander Logan Allen (7-9, 3.87 ERA) to the mound against Rangers righty Jack Leiter (7-7, 4.06 ERA).

🏈 Mentor’s Farley Runs Wild for 364 Yards, 5 TDs in 35-28 Win

Mentor senior Jackson Farley delivered a historic performance on Aug. 22, rushing for 364 yards and all five of his team’s touchdowns to lift the Cardinals to a 35-28 season-opening win at Olmsted Falls.

Farley’s dominant night — 35 carries and five scores — kept the Cardinals in control, especially down the stretch when Mentor drained the final 7:18 to seal the win. With a physical offensive line paving the way, the Cardinals leaned heavily on Farley, who wore down the Bulldogs' defense.

Mentor (1-0) had to battle back early, as Olmsted Falls scored first and led 14-7 after a 58-yard touchdown pass. Farley tied it with his second score, then gave the Cardinals their first lead after an interception by Jacksen Schultz set up a short field. The Bulldogs responded with a late touchdown to tie it at 21 going into halftime.

Farley opened the second half with a 55-yard scoring run, but Olmsted Falls matched it with a long drive of their own. Farley’s fifth touchdown — an 18-yard burst — put Mentor ahead for good with 9:44 to play.

The Bulldogs threatened once more but came up short on a fourth-and-1 near the Mentor 36. From there, the Cardinals ran out the clock with an 11-play drive, showcasing their physical edge.

Mentor will travel to McDowell (Pa.) on Aug. 29 for its next game.

🏈 Turnovers, Big Plays Doom Lake Catholic in 30-13 Loss

Lake Catholic’s season opener at Jerome T. Osborne Stadium ended in frustration as Cardinal Mooney rode four touchdowns from senior running back Ike Lake to a 30-13 win on Aug. 22.

Lake did most of the damage early, scoring three touchdowns in the first half to build a 21-0 lead, then adding a 35-yard score on the first possession of the third quarter. His explosive runs capitalized on two Lake Catholic fumbles inside their own 30-yard line, giving Mooney short fields to work with.

The Cougars got on the board just before halftime when sophomore quarterback Max Pisano found senior Pete Malchesky for a 28-yard touchdown. But after a Mooney punt error gave Lake Catholic good field position in the third, the Cougars failed to convert, ending the drive with a fourth-down interception.

Injuries to senior linemen David Ianinni and Nathan Zappitelli left Lake Catholic shorthanded up front, but Coach Marty Gibbons refused to cite that as an excuse, instead pointing to coaching and execution as areas for improvement.

Penalties and missed opportunities also plagued the Cougars throughout the game, preventing sustained drives and extending several of Mooney’s possessions.

Lake Catholic continued to fight. Pisano hit Guy Dominick with a 34-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth to cut the deficit to 30-13. A failed onside kick ended any comeback hopes.

Despite the loss, Gibbons expressed confidence in the team’s ability to bounce back next week.
