🌨️ Contractors Wanted for New Mentor Senior Snowplow Assistance Program

Mentor Seeks Plow Contractors for Senior Snow Removal Program
Yesterday, we shared news about Operation Snow Lift, a new pilot program from the City of Mentor and the Lake County Council on Aging designed to help eligible seniors with emergency snow removal. Today, the city is reaching out to find contractors to handle the plowing.
The program targets low-to-moderate-income seniors who may not be able to afford per-push snow services. Set to begin in the 2025–2026 winter season, it will provide up to 74 qualifying Mentor households with vouchers redeemable for snow removal during snow emergencies. If the pilot proves successful, it may expand next year.
To support the program, the Lake County Council on Aging has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP), inviting local snowplow contractors to bid. Selected contractors will work with the city and Council on Aging to provide these services.
Interested contractors can find more information and submit questions at: https://www.lccoa.org/rfp-questions-and-answers. More program updates are expected soon.

Stolen Service Dog Reunited with Blind Owner After Over Two Months Missing
In a heartwarming turn of events, a 14-year-old Dachshund named Bam Bam has been safely reunited with his legally blind owner more than two months after being stolen from their Illinois home.
The elderly service dog was taken from the backyard of 58-year-old Angel Santiago on June 5. Santiago, who suffers from glaucoma, relied on Bam Bam for daily assistance and emotional support. The sudden loss left him struggling to navigate without his trusted companion.
Despite his disability, Santiago walked up to seven miles a day in search of Bam Bam. He distributed flyers and called out for his dog, while a growing community of supporters online amplified his story. One viral video criticizing the theft garnered over 800,000 views.
This week, Bam Bam was unexpectedly dropped off at Chicago’s 16th District police station by an unidentified man and woman. After a microchip scan confirmed his identity, Santiago and Bam Bam were finally reunited — a moment filled with emotion and relief.
Support extended internationally, with calls of encouragement coming from countries like Spain and New Zealand. PETA had planned to launch billboards to aid in the search, but with Bam Bam found just days before their release, they will now display an updated message noting his rescue.
Authorities are still investigating the theft, though no arrests have been made and the identities of the individuals who returned Bam Bam remain unknown.

⚾ Manzardo Walk-Off Lifts Guardians Over Rays in Extra-Inning Thriller
The Cleveland Guardians edged the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3 in extra innings on Wednesday, with Kyle Manzardo delivering a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th. Angel Martínez started the inning on second and moved to third on Bo Naylor’s sacrifice. After an intentional walk to Steven Kwan and a strikeout by Brayan Rocchio, Manzardo lined an 0-2 fastball to center to seal the win.
It was Manzardo’s third walk-off hit of the season, making him the first Guardian to do so since Jim Thome in 2001. The win marked Cleveland’s second straight and ended a three-series losing streak.
Nolan Jones tied the game in the ninth with a solo homer to right-center—his fourth of the year and Cleveland’s first extra-base hit in 45 innings. Will Wilson added a career-best three hits, and Cade Smith earned the win after a perfect 10th inning.
Tampa Bay took an early lead with a two-run homer from Brandon Lowe and an RBI single by Everson Pereira but couldn’t recover after Jake Mangum was picked off in the ninth. The Rays have now lost six of their last nine games.
Cleveland faces Seattle next, while Tampa Bay heads to Washington after Thursday’s off day.

⚾ Lake County Holds Off Lugnuts After Early Offensive Surge
The Lake County Captains held off a late rally to edge the Lansing Lugnuts 7-6 on Wednesday, fueled by a fast start and timely pitching down the stretch.
Lake County jumped out early, scoring in each of the first five innings. Nick Mitchell scored the opening run on a groundout, then crossed home again in the third on a sacrifice fly by Juan Benjamin. A three-run homer by Kyle Dernedde in the fourth extended the lead, followed by a run-scoring single from Johnny Tincher and an RBI triple from Mitchell in the fifth, putting the Captains ahead 7-0.
Starting pitcher Matt Wilkinson turned in a solid outing, but it was reliever Josh Harlow who earned the win after tossing 1.1 scoreless innings to help preserve the lead.
Lansing mounted a comeback beginning in the seventh with a sacrifice fly, then added five more in the eighth. Their push included a forceout RBI, a groundout, a bases-loaded walk, and a run-scoring single. A throwing error on a pickoff attempt allowed the sixth run to score, narrowing the gap to one, but the Captains held on to secure the win.
