đ Can McDowell Contain Jackson Farley? Mentorâs Star RB Headlines Week 2 Matchup

Mentor @ Erie McDowell
As Week 2 of high school football approaches, Erie McDowell faces a steep challenge in a nonconference matchup against Mentor on Thursday, Aug. 29, at Gus Anderson Field in Erie. McDowell, still looking for its first win after a tough 49-10 loss to Medina Highland, will need a strong defensive showing to slow down one of Ohio's most dominant rushing attacks.
Mentor enters the game at 1-0 following a 35-28 victory over Olmsted Falls, powered by an exceptional performance from running back Jackson Farley. The dynamic senior rushed for an eye-popping 365 yards and five touchdowns behind a massive and experienced offensive line featuring future college players committed to NC State, Kent State, and Navy. The Cardinals hardly needed a passing game, totaling just 81 yards through the air, as Farley consistently broke through the defense.
McDowellâs defense will need to find answers quickly to contain Farley and the Mentor ground game. If they can't, it could be another long night for the Trojans. On the other side of the ball, Mentorâs defense showed vulnerability against the run last week, giving up 28 points. That opens a potential opportunity for McDowellâs offense to test the Cardinals' ability to adjust.
Historically, McDowell hasnât had much success against Mentor, trailing 0-3 in the all-time series, including a 50-14 blowout loss in 2024. With Mentor preparing for a high-profile game against St. Ignatius next week, the Cardinals will be eager to fine-tune both sides of the ball and maintain their perfect record.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m., and fans can catch the action on WHK-AM 1420.
đ Shoremen, Cougars Set for First-Ever Meeting in Week 2

Avon Lake @ Lake Catholic
Two respected high school football programs searching for their first win of the season will square off when Lake Catholic hosts Avon Lake in a non-conference matchup at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 29, at Jerome T. Osborne Stadium.
Lake Catholic enters Week 2 looking to rebound from a 30-13 loss to Cardinal Mooney. Despite plans to lean on the ground game this season, the Cougars struggled to establish any rhythm on the ground, managing just 55 rushing yards. Sophomore quarterback Max Pisano showed promise in his varsity debut, passing for 144 yards and two touchdowns, both caught by receivers Pete Malchesky and Guy Dominick. However, defensive strugglesâespecially against the runâleft Lake with little chance to rally in Week 1.
Avon Lake comes into the matchup after an offensive shootout with Strongsville that ended in a heartbreaking 43-42 loss. The Shoremen had a chance to win on a two-point conversion in the closing seconds but came up short. Quarterback Dawson Tenbrink led an impressive passing effort with 216 yards and three touchdowns, though five turnovers ultimately proved costly.
Both teams will look to clean up their mistakes and find more balance heading into Week 2. While the Cougars aim to jumpstart their running game and tighten up on defense, the Shoremen will need to protect the ball better while continuing to capitalize on their passing strength.
This will be the first-ever meeting between Lake Catholic and Avon Lake, adding a layer of intrigue to an already competitive early-season test.
Fans can tune in to WHK-AM 1420 for live coverage.
⟠Captains Fall 6-1 to Lugnuts as Early Deficit Proves Costly
The Lake County Captains fell short on the road last night, suffering a 6-1 loss to the Lansing Lugnuts in a game that saw early offensive pressure from Lansing and continued struggles for Lake County's starting pitcher, Jackson Humphries.
Humphries, now 1-9 with a 4.52 ERA on the season, was tagged with the loss after pitching four innings. He allowed four runsâthree earnedâon five hits, walked two, and struck out four. Lansing wasted no time getting on the board, scoring twice in the first inning. Cameron Leary crossed the plate on a Ryan Lasko single, and Lasko would score shortly after on a wild pitch following a strikeout.
The Lugnuts continued to build their lead in the second inning with a sacrifice fly by Leary and an RBI single from Casey Yamauchi, putting Lansing up 4-0. In the seventh, they tacked on two more runs with a double from Lasko and a single by Pedro Pineda, extending their lead to 6-0.
Lake County avoided the shutout in the ninth when Jose Devers delivered a line-drive single to center, scoring Jaison Chourio for the Captains' only run of the night.
