🛣️ Public Comment Open on Two Major I-90 Projects in Lake County

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), in coordination with the City of Mentor, is seeking public feedback on two significant infrastructure projects planned for the I-90 corridor in Lake County. Both initiatives aim to improve traffic flow, safety, and long-term durability along a vital stretch of highway that serves thousands of commuters daily.

ODOT's I-90 Corridor Rehabilitation

ODOT plans to undertake a comprehensive six-mile rehabilitation of I-90, from the Kirtland Road bridge overpass to the Morley Road bridge overpass. This multi-community project will affect areas within Willoughby, Mentor, Kirtland Hills, and Concord Township.

Key components of the project include:

  • Full-depth pavement replacement throughout the corridor

  • Ramp pavement replacement at SR 306, SR 615, and the Concord and Lake Rest Areas

  • Vertical clearance improvements on multiple overpass bridges

  • Rehabilitation of six existing bridges along the corridor

  • Upgrades to drainage systems, signage, pavement markings, and lighting at SR 306 and SR 615 interchanges

City of Mentor’s SR 615 Interchange Enhancements

Separately, the City of Mentor is proposing upgrades to the I-90/SR-615 interchange to alleviate congestion and enhance traffic movement. Planned improvements include:

  • Widening the bridge over I-90 to add a new southbound left-turn lane

  • Adding a dedicated right-turn lane to each off-ramp

Both projects are currently in the planning and design phases, and public input is a key part of the review process.

🏈 Cardinals Dominate After Slow Start in Blowout Road Victory

Farley’s Three Touchdowns Lead Mentor Past Erie McDowell, 42-12

Mentor wasted little time overcoming an early deficit, surging past Erie McDowell for a convincing 42-12 road win on Friday night at Gus Anderson Field. The Cardinals improved to 2-0 on the season with their second straight nonconference victory.

After McDowell opened the game with a quick touchdown, Mentor responded with a 53-yard scoring run from Jackson Farley and a 15-yard touchdown reception by Justin Hodge to take a 14-6 lead after one quarter.

The hosts briefly cut into the deficit with a second-quarter score, but Mentor answered with two explosive plays: a 51-yard touchdown pass from Brogan Jones to Logan Berwald and a 79-yard scoring dash from Farley. The Cardinals entered halftime up 28-12.

Mentor stayed in control after the break. Just two plays into the second half, Farley found the end zone again on a 40-yard run — his third touchdown of the night. Jaxon Callahan added a 7-yard score to cap the night’s scoring at 42-12.

The Cardinals return home to face winless St. Ignatius next Friday.

🏈 Lake Catholic Rides Turnovers and Tough Defense to Victory

Lake Catholic’s Defense Holds Strong in 21-14 Victory Over Avon Lake

A strong defensive performance and critical special teams plays lifted Lake Catholic to a 21-14 non-conference win over Avon Lake on August 29, securing the Cougars' first win of the season.

Lake Catholic opened with a sharp 79-yard drive, capped by a 20-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Max Pisano to Tyler Hribar. But the offense cooled off, totaling just 34 yards for the rest of the first half.

Despite the slowdown, the Cougars’ defense kept the Shoremen off the board and forced a missed 26-yard field goal to preserve a 7-0 halftime lead.

Avon Lake tied the game early in the third quarter following a 29-yard run that set up a short touchdown. But momentum quickly swung back to Lake Catholic. Marty Loncar stripped the ball from the Shoremen quarterback and recovered the fumble, setting up a one-yard score from Danny Zmorowski.

On the next Avon Lake possession, Loncar blocked a punt, recovered inside the 20-yard line by the Cougars. Zmorowski again found the end zone from one yard out to put Lake Catholic up 21-7.

The defense continued to step up. Tristan Negrelli intercepted a pass on the Shoremen’s next snap, halting another threat. While the Cougars couldn't extend the lead, they kept Avon Lake in check until a late touchdown made it 21-14.

Avon Lake’s final hope ended with an onside kick that went out of bounds, sealing the win for Lake Catholic.

Now 1-1, the Cougars finish their homestand against Buchtel on September 6. Avon Lake, 0-2, will host Highland on September 5.

⚾ Guardians Stun Mariners With Ninth-Inning Comeback, Win 5-4

CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Guardians pulled off a late-game comeback to beat the Seattle Mariners 5-4 on Friday night, narrowing the gap in the AL wild-card race to four games.

Down 4-3 in the ninth, Nolan Jones led off with a double and scored the tying run on Brayan Rocchio’s single. A throwing error allowed Rocchio to reach third, setting up Steven Kwan for a sacrifice fly that sealed the win. Tim Herrin closed the game with a scoreless ninth.

Seattle took an early 4-0 lead with a first-inning surge off Logan Allen, capped by Jorge Polanco’s 21st home run. But Cleveland answered with solo shots from Kyle Manzardo and Jones in the sixth and seventh, and an RBI single from Angel Martínez in the eighth.

The Mariners’ bullpen faltered late, giving up three runs over just four outs. Closer Andrés Muñoz took the loss after allowing the tying and go-ahead runs.

José Ramírez became the all-time hits leader at Progressive Field with a double in the first inning, his 826th at the stadium. Seattle’s Cal Raleigh, the MLB home run leader, walked three times but didn’t record a hit. Victor Robles began serving a seven-game suspension related to a Triple-A incident.

The series continues Saturday with Logan Gilbert set to face Gavin Williams.
