Fall Reminders: Open Burning Rules & Yard Waste Collection in Mentor

As autumn approaches, the City of Mentor is reminding residents about important guidelines for outdoor burning and yard waste disposal.

Open burning of trash, brush, or leaves is strictly prohibited within city limits. However, small campfires used for cooking are allowed, provided they are closely attended and weather conditions are favorable. For those planning larger fires or bonfires, prior approval is required from the Fire Prevention Bureau, which can be reached at (440) 974-5768.

In preparation for fall cleanup, the city is also increasing the yard waste collection limit. Beginning October 27, homeowners may place up to 25 units of yard waste at the curb each week—up from the usual 12. A unit is defined as one bag, bundle, or container. For questions about the yard waste program, contact the Public Works Department at (440) 974-5781.

🚧 State Route 44 Upgrades Move Forward in Concord Township

Major Upgrades Approved for State Route 44 in Concord Township

A significant infrastructure project in Concord Township has received the green light, setting the stage for major improvements to State Route 44, the Lake County Engineer’s Office confirmed this week.

The State Route 44 Improvement Project will enhance a 4.29-mile stretch between Mentor Road and just north of Girdled Road. Plans include resurfacing, drainage upgrades, culvert repairs, and updated signage and striping.

The project also includes pavement widening to add new turn lanes at Route 44 intersections with Girdled, Crile, and Auburn Roads. A traffic signal upgrade is planned at Route 44 and Girdled Road to improve flow and safety.

Part of a larger plan, the work extends from the Chardon Corporation Line in Chardon Township. The total cost is estimated at $8.95 million and will be fully funded by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT).

Following review, Lake County officials approved the proposed upgrades within the county right-of-way, allowing ODOT to move forward.

Bids are expected in late fall, with construction set to begin in early 2026 and finish by fall 2027.

The project targets long-standing traffic congestion and safety concerns, particularly at the Route 44 and Girdled Road intersection. Between 2017 and 2021, 112 crashes were reported at intersections within the project area, including Hosford Road.

⚾ Guardians' Big Sixth Inning Not Enough in 11-7 Loss to Red Sox

Guardians Fall 11-7 to Red Sox Despite Explosive Sixth Inning

The Cleveland Guardians couldn’t hold onto momentum Tuesday night, falling 11-7 to the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park despite a dramatic six-run sixth inning.

Cleveland struck first with a short homer tucked around Pesky’s Pole by Jhonkensy Noel. But starter Slade Cecconi soon struggled, giving up a wave of hits in the third that gave Boston a 4-1 lead. A solo home run by Nathaniel Lowe added to the damage.

The Guardians stormed back in the sixth. Austin Hedges kicked things off with a leadoff homer over the Green Monster. David Fry added a two-run blast, followed by singles from Kyle Manzardo and Noel. Brayan Rocchio then launched a three-run homer to cap the rally, giving Cleveland a 7-5 lead.

It didn’t last.

Cecconi surrendered a two-run homer in the bottom half of the inning and was pulled after allowing 11 hits and 7 earned runs across 5.1 innings with 8 strikeouts. The bullpen struggled to contain Boston’s bats, allowing four more runs in the eighth on a series of singles and doubles that put the game out of reach.

Cleveland’s offense went quiet in the ninth, and a sharp liner by Steven Kwan ended the game. With playoff hopes fading, every loss carries extra weight.

The series wraps Wednesday night, with Joey Cantillo set to start as Cleveland moves to a six-man rotation.

⚾ Late-Inning Drama Lifts Lake County Past Great Lakes

Captains Walk Off in 10 Innings, Edge Loons 7-6

The Lake County Captains secured a thrilling 7-6 extra-inning victory over the Great Lakes Loons on Tuesday night, thanks to late-game execution and strong relief pitching.

Jay Driver earned the win, improving to 5-2 on the season. He pitched 2.2 no-hit innings, allowing one unearned run while striking out four and walking one — effectively shutting down the Loons in the final frames.

Great Lakes opened the scoring with a solo home run in the first. Lake County answered in the bottom half with a bases-loaded walk to tie the game. The Loons moved ahead 2-1 in the second on a double steal and throwing error, then made it 3-1 in the third with an RBI single.

Lake County responded in the fourth with two runs — a groundout and a single — tying the score 3-3. In the fifth, the Captains added two more, one on a fielder’s choice and another via sacrifice fly, taking a 5-3 lead.

The Loons tied it again in the seventh with RBI hits from Kendall George and Josue De Paula. In the 10th, a sac fly briefly put Great Lakes ahead 6-5.

But Lake County rallied. Maick Collado tied it with an RBI single, and Nick Mitchell followed with a walk-off sacrifice fly to bring home the winning run.

The Captains continue their late-season push with renewed momentum after the extra-inning win.
