🄽 Mentor Unveils Major Aquatic Upgrades for Summer 2026

City of Mentor

Mentor is making waves with two major aquatic upgrades set to open in summer 2026, bringing modern, family-friendly water attractions to Civic Center Park and Eleanor B. Garfield Park.

At Civic Center Park, construction is underway on a new 42-foot waterslide tower featuring three slides for varying thrill levels. Existing pool buildings will be replaced with a modern complex that includes updated restrooms, locker facilities, a concession stand, covered dining areas, and expanded pool and splash pad zones.

Over at Garfield Park, a new 7,000-square-foot splash pad will take the place of the former pool, which closed in 2020 and was later removed. Designed for families, the area will offer over a dozen interactive water features, shady seating, a large lawn, and a raised retaining wall for relaxed viewing.

A new bathhouse will include men’s and women’s restrooms, two family restrooms, lockers, secure storage, and a picnic pavilion. The entire splash pad will be enclosed with fencing and gates to ensure safety.

The original Garfield Park pool, built in the 1960s, had experienced declining attendance before closing during the pandemic. Its replacement offers a more sustainable and accessible water play option with lower staffing needs and greater flexibility.

Together, the Civic Center and Garfield Park projects represent a multi-million-dollar investment in Mentor’s recreational future, with both set to open for the 2026 swim season.

šŸ›£ļø Corduroy Road Resurfacing Begins September 9 in Mentor

Corduroy Road - City of Mentor

Drivers in Mentor should prepare for potential delays starting Tuesday, September 9, as resurfacing work begins on Corduroy Road. The project will cover the stretch between Garden Lane and the southern end of the causeway.

Construction crews will operate daily from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and although two-way traffic will remain open, parts of the roadway will be reduced to a single lane. Flaggers will be on site to help manage traffic flow and ensure safety.

The roadwork is part of the city’s ongoing infrastructure improvements and is expected to wrap up by the end of September. Motorists are encouraged to allow extra time for travel through the area during active construction hours.

Residents with questions about city projects can call (440) 974-5785 or email [email protected].

šŸˆ St. Ignatius Seeks First Win in Showdown with Red-Hot Mentor

St. Ignatius and Mentor Set for Storied Showdown at Osborne Stadium

One of Northeast Ohio’s most enduring high school football rivalries resumes under the lights on September 5, as St. Ignatius travels to Jerome T. Osborne Stadium to face off against undefeated Mentor in a nonconference matchup.

Despite St. Ignatius entering the game at 0-2, the Wildcats’ record belies the strength of their competition, having already faced tough opponents in Avon and Pickerington North. Quarterback Dane Donovan and receiver Luke Simms have shown sparks of chemistry, connecting for the team’s only touchdowns in each of their first two games.

Mentor, on the other hand, has jumped out to a 2-0 start, including a dominant 42-12 win over Erie McDowell last week. The Cardinals’ offense has been driven by standout running back Jackson Farley, who has amassed a staggering 610 rushing yards and eight touchdowns in just two games. Farley also torched the Wildcats last season with a 211-yard performance.

Mentor's offensive line, anchored by Division I commits Landry Brede, JoJo LoDuca, and Colin Prichard, has been instrumental in creating running lanes and giving sophomore quarterback Brogan Jones time to find key targets like Miami (Ohio) recruit Justen Hodge.

This will be the 32nd meeting between the two programs, with St. Ignatius holding a narrow 17-14 edge in the all-time series. The teams split their two matchups in 2023, adding to the intensity of this year's clash.

With high-powered offenses on both sides, the game may come down to which defense can make critical stops when it counts.

⚾ Late Home Runs Can't Save Guardians in 4-2 Loss to Rays

The Cleveland Guardians fell 4-2 to the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday, despite ninth-inning solo homers by JosƩ Ramƭrez and Kyle Manzardo. Both went deep off Rays closer Pete Fairbanks, but he bounced back to retire the next three hitters and close out the win.

Tampa starter Ryan Pepiot was dominant, tossing five no-hit innings with six strikeouts and two walks. Cleveland didn’t record a hit until RamĆrez singled in the sixth off reliever Bryan Barker.

Defensive errors hurt the Guardians. Shortstop Gabriel Arias made two throwing mistakes, ending an eight-game errorless streak. His first error in the opening inning led to an unearned run, and the second allowed Tampa to extend its lead in the fourth.

Logan Allen pitched five innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Tampa added two runs in the sixth on a fielder’s choice and a squeeze bunt by Carson Williams.

Christopher Morel had three hits and an RBI, his fifth three-hit game of the season.

The loss drops Cleveland 3.5 games behind Seattle for the final AL wild card spot, with several teams ahead in the race. The series continues on Friday.

⚾ Lake County Rallies Past Loons in 9th, Eyes Return to Postseason

The Lake County Captains pulled off a dramatic 4-3 walk-off win over the Great Lakes Loons on Wednesday night, taking a crucial step toward clinching a playoff spot with three regular-season games remaining—all against the Loons.

Starter Michael Kennedy lasted 3.2 innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits, while walking three and striking out five. Xavier Martinez earned the win in relief, giving up a solo homer over 1.2 innings.

The Loons took an early lead in the first when Kendall George stole third—his 99th of the season—and scored on a throwing error. Lake County answered in the fourth with a two-run shot from Bennett Thompson, scoring Jaison Chourio to take a 2-1 lead.

Great Lakes tied it in the sixth on a bases-loaded walk. In the ninth, Jake Gelof put the Loons ahead with his 15th home run of the season. But Lake County responded quickly: Jose Devers tied the game with a solo blast, and Juan Benjamin later scored the game-winner on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Dernedde.

With the win, the Captains need just one more victory to clinch a postseason berth and begin defending their Midwest League title—having won their second championship in franchise history last year.
