Captains Clinch Playoff Spot with 3-2 Win Over Loons in Tightly Contested Series

For the third straight game in the series, just one run separated the Lake County Captains and Great Lakes Loons. On a cool, overcast Friday night at Classic Auto Group Park, the Captains edged out a 3-2 win, securing a playoff berth with strong pitching and opportunistic offense.

Left-hander Caden Favors led the way, striking out six over six innings while allowing just one run. That lone blemish came in the sixth, when Eduardo Quintero tied the game with a 375-foot home run to left-center — his 18th of the season and fourth in High-A. Quintero is one of only two minor leaguers with 18+ home runs and 45+ stolen bases in 2025, alongside Konnor Griffin.

Lake County opened the scoring in the third inning with a sequence of infield singles. Three consecutive Captains reached base, and centerfielder Jaison Chourio knocked in the game's first run with an RBI single. Loons starter Sterling Patick escaped further damage and completed three innings.

The decisive inning came in the sixth. Reliever Aidan Foeller issued four walks, including back-to-back free passes to Bennett Thompson and Jose Devers. Juan Benjamin then dropped down a sacrifice bunt, and an errant throw by catcher Gio Cueto allowed two runs to score. Cam Day came in for the Loons to record a strikeout and stop the bleeding, later finishing 2.1 scoreless innings.

The Loons cut the deficit to one in the eighth. Quintero walked, and Josue De Paula drove him in with an RBI double that skipped past Chourio in center. Jay Driver entered in relief and calmly shut down the inning with a groundout and strikeout, then retired the side in order in the ninth to earn the save.

With the win, the Captains clinch the second-half Midwest League playoff spot and will face the West Michigan Whitecaps in the Eastern Division Championship Series starting Tuesday, September 9.

🏈 Cardinals Clamp Down Late to Top St. Ignatius in Rivalry Clash

Mentor Fends Off St. Ignatius Rally to Stay Perfect at 3-0

MENTOR, Ohio – The Mentor Cardinals improved to 3-0 Friday night with a 35-21 win over rival St. Ignatius, holding off a second-half surge behind the steady play of Jackson Farley and a resilient defense.

Although St. Ignatius entered 0-2, the recent rivalry history pointed to a close contest. The last five regular-season meetings had been decided by one score, with each team knocking the other out of the playoffs in the past two years.

Mentor, ranked No. 4 by cleveland.com, took control after an early touchdown by St. Ignatius running back Jake Bobinski, who broke free for a 34-yard score. Quarterback Brogan Jones tied it up for the Cardinals with a rushing touchdown, followed by a short Farley score and a 43-yard touchdown pass from Jones to Justen Hodge to make it 21-7.

Bobinski struck again before halftime, staying on his feet after rolling over a tackler for a stunning 53-yard touchdown to trim the lead to 21-14.

Mentor extended the lead in the third quarter when Jones hit Logan Berwald for a touchdown. But St. Ignatius recovered a fumble and converted it into a fourth-down sneak by Jacob Mikin, cutting the deficit to 28-21.

With under seven minutes left, Farley led a clock-draining drive, converting first downs and finishing with a 12-yard touchdown to seal the win.

The Cardinals' defense stood tall in crucial moments, including a key fourth-and-2 stop inside their own 5-yard line. Both teams traded turnovers, with fumble recoveries by Jaxson Callahan (Mentor) and Quinn Kennedy (Ignatius).

Despite the win, Mentor’s coaching staff noted there's room for improvement.

Next up, Mentor visits Brunswick, while St. Ignatius (0-3) hosts Walsh Jesuit.

⚾ Cougars Eye Second Straight Win as Buchtel Comes to Town

Lake Catholic Set to Host Akron Buchtel in Nonconference Clash

Lake Catholic returns to Jerome T. Osborne Stadium on Friday night aiming to build momentum against a struggling Akron Buchtel squad in a nonconference matchup.

The Cougars (1-1) bounced back in Week 2 with a hard-fought 21-14 win over Avon Lake after a disappointing season opener. Quarterback Max Pisano led a balanced attack, passing for 54 yards and a touchdown while adding 35 yards on the ground. Michael Valentino contributed 46 rushing yards, and Danny Zmorowski powered in two short-yardage touchdowns.

Lake Catholic’s win was anchored by its defense, with senior linebacker Marty Loncar posting double-digit tackles to help neutralize Avon Lake’s offense.

Akron Buchtel (0-2), meanwhile, continues its search for a first win. The Griffins fell to Warren Harding last week, 25-6, and have scored just six points through their first two games, while allowing 55. Offensive struggles have kept them out of contention in both outings, and they face another tough challenge against Lake Catholic’s surging defense.

The Cougars will look to capitalize on Buchtel’s offensive woes while fine-tuning their game ahead of a Week 4 road trip to Gilmour Academy. A strong performance Friday could mark a turning point early in the season for Lake Catholic, as the team aims to establish consistency on both sides of the ball.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on Sept. 6 at Jerome T. Osborne Stadium.

⚾ Guardians Snap Rays’ Streak with Explosive Second-Inning Surge

The Cleveland Guardians ended the Tampa Bay Rays' seven-game winning streak with a commanding 7-1 victory Friday night in Tampa. A five-run second inning proved decisive, helping Cleveland reach a 70-70 record and stay in the playoff hunt.

The Rays, using an opener for the first time this season, saw their strategy unravel quickly. After Griffin Jax pitched a scoreless first, Ian Seymour took over and struggled. A misplayed bunt, a hit batter, and a walk loaded the bases for Cleveland. Stephen Kwan singled in two runs, José Ramírez followed with a two-run double, and David Fry added an RBI single to cap the inning.

Austin Hedges hit a solo homer in the fifth, while Ramírez led the offense with three hits and two RBIs.

Gavin Williams pitched seven strong innings, allowing one run on seven hits. He walked three and struck out three. Tampa Bay’s only run came on Junior Caminero’s solo home run in the sixth—his 41st of the season and AL-best 14th since August 1.

The win marked Cleveland’s fourth in 14 games and extended their home run streak to eight straight games, their second-longest of the year. The Rays fell to 71-69 as both teams continue to chase wild-card spots.

Next, Cleveland sends Tanner Bibee to the mound Saturday night against Tampa Bay’s Shane Baz.
