š³ Mentor Offers Free Trees to Residents Through Annual Beautification Program

City of Mentor
Mentor Launches Free Tree Program to Enhance Neighborhood Beauty and Manage Stormwater
Mentor residents have a fresh opportunity to green up their neighborhoods through the cityās Street Tree Program, an initiative aimed at enhancing the appearance of local streets while also supporting stormwater management.
Each year, the city offers a limited number of trees at no cost to residents. These trees are planted by city workers within the public right-of-way, helping to improve curb appeal and promote environmental health. The program operates on a first-come, first-served basis and is available during both the spring and fall planting seasons.
Residents interested in receiving a tree must complete the Mentor Street Tree Order Form to be considered. All planting work is handled by city personnel, making it an easy and accessible way for residents to contribute to the city's beautification efforts.
For further details or assistance with the application, the Public Works Department is available via phone or email.

š Refinances Climb as Mortgage Rates Drop to New Lows
Refinance Activity Picks Up Slightly as Home Purchase Applications Dip
Mortgage applications saw a slight decline last week, with overall volume slipping by 1.2%, according to the latest data from the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) for the week ending August 29, 2025. Despite a drop in interest rates, the lower costs werenāt enough to boost overall application activity.
Refinancing applications showed a modest uptick, rising by 1% from the previous weekāthanks largely to increased interest in FHA and VA loan programs. However, conventional refinance activity moved in the opposite direction, declining slightly. Year-over-year, refinance applications are up by 20%, reflecting ongoing interest in locking in more favorable terms as rates gradually ease.
Home purchase applications, on the other hand, declined by 3% after four consecutive weeks of growth. The slowdown in buyer activity was reflected across all major loan types, indicating a pause in momentum within the housing market. Despite the weekly dip, purchase applications still remain 17% higher than the same time last year.
The share of refinance applications climbed to 46.9% of total mortgage activity. Adjustable-rate mortgages (ARMs) made up 8.8%, FHA loans accounted for 19.9%, and VA loans represented 13.8% of all applications.
Mortgage rates fell across nearly all categories. The average 30-year fixed rate dropped to 6.64%, the lowest level since April. Other rates also saw declines: the 15-year fixed dropped to 5.84%, jumbo 30-year loans to 6.58%, and FHA-backed loans to 6.31%. The 5/1 adjustable-rate mortgage declined to 5.90%.
With rates now at an 11-month low in daily terms following the MBAās reporting cutoff, refinance momentum may continue. However, purchase demand tends to respond more slowly to short-term rate shifts, suggesting the housing market may need more sustained changes to regain traction.

š Flacco's Comeback Spoiled by Turnovers, Missed Kicks in Crushing Loss
Browns Fall 17-16 to Bengals After Missed Kicks and Late Turnovers
Joe Flacco brought energy back to the lakefront, but critical mistakes cost the Browns a heartbreaking 17-16 season-opening loss to the Bengals on Sunday.
The 40-year-old quarterback passed for 290 yards and a touchdown, but two interceptions ā both off deflections by his receivers ā proved costly. The final one, with 1:24 left, bounced off Cedric Tillmanās hands and was picked by Bengals cornerback D.J. Turner, ending Clevelandās comeback hopes.
Cleveland had a golden opportunity minutes earlier when Flacco drove the offense to the Cincinnati 12, setting up rookie kicker Andre Szmyt for a potential game-winning 36-yard field goal. But Szmyt pushed it wide right ā his second miss of the day after a failed extra point earlier in the half.
Despite outgaining the Bengals 327-141 and holding them to just 7 yards in the second half (the lowest second-half output by a winning team in 25 years), the Browns couldnāt capitalize. Cincinnatiās only second-half score came after Flaccoās first interception, setting up a short field for a go-ahead field goal.
Clevelandās defense, led by two late sacks from Myles Garrett, kept the Bengals offense in check, but the Browns dropped to 3-23-1 in season openers since 1999.
Raheim "Rocket" Sanders scored Clevelandās first touchdown, while Tillman added another, but the missed PAT and field goal loomed large.
Joe Burrow threw for just 113 yards and a touchdown, and his star receivers were mostly neutralized ā but Cincinnati took advantage of Clevelandās miscues to start the season 1-0.
The Browns visit the Ravens next week. Cincinnati hosts Jacksonville.

ā¾ Postseason-Bound Captains Stumble Against Loons
The Lake County Captains, already playoff-bound, dropped a 9-5 decision to the Great Lakes Loons on Sunday at Classic Auto Group Park.
Starter Jackson Humphries gave up two runs over 2.2 innings, while reliever Alonzo Richardson struggled, allowing six more runs in just under three innings of work.
Great Lakes broke through in the third with a solo homer by Samuel Munoz, followed by an RBI single from Jake Gelof and a run-scoring error. In the fourth, Josue De Paula extended the lead with a three-run blast to make it 6-0.
Lake County responded with RBI hits from Juan Benjamin and Johnny Tincher, trimming the gap to 6-2, but Logan Wagnerās three-run homer in the sixth put the game out of reach. The Captains added late runs, including a two-run homer from Esteban GonzĆ”lez, but couldnāt close the deficit.
With the playoffs secured, the Captains will look to reset as postseason play approaches.
