š¤ Mid-Afternoon Slump: How to Overcome it and Stay Productive

The mid-afternoon slump is a real thing. It's that feeling of fatigue and decreased alertness that can hit sometime between 2pm and 4pm. It can be hard to concentrate, focus, and get things done.
There are a few reasons why we experience the mid-afternoon slump. First, our circadian rhythm, or natural sleep-wake cycle, dips around this time of day. Second, our blood sugar levels may drop, especially if we ate a heavy lunch or skipped breakfast altogether. Finally, we may be simply experiencing fatigue from a long day of work or school.
Whatever the reason, the mid-afternoon slump can be a major productivity killer. But there are a few things you can do to overcome it and stay focused, so you are energized throughout the afternoon.
1. Get enough sleep: This may seem obvious, but getting enough sleep is essential for staying productive throughout the day. When you're well-rested, you have more energy and focus. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep per night.
2. Eat a healthy lunch: Avoid heavy, greasy lunches that will make you feel sluggish. Instead, opt for a light, healthy lunch that includes protein, complex carbohydrates and healthy fats. These foods will give you sustained energy without making you feel weighed down. Caffeine and sugar may give you a temporary energy boost, but they will eventually lead to a crash. Be sure to avoid sugary drinks and limit your caffeine intake. Low iron can lead to feeling tired. Try to incorporate some tofu, lentils, turkey or spinach and other leafy greens into your meals.
3. Take breaks: It's important to take breaks throughout the day, even if it's just for a few minutes. Get up and move around, or step outside for some fresh air. Taking breaks will help you stay refreshed and focused. Remember when eating your healthy lunch, stop and enjoy it instead of mindlessly gobbling it down while in front of the computer or while trying to complete tasks.
4. Hydrate: Dehydration can lead to fatigue and decreased alertness. Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially in the afternoon. As the days get cooler, hot tea can be the perfect afternoon beverage. If you typically reach for a snack during āslump hoursā, brew some tea as an alternative.
5. Get some exercise: Even a short burst of exercise can help boost your energy levels and improve your mood. If you can, try to get some exercise during your lunch break or after work. Step away from the screen and take a brisk walk, preferably outside, but even cruising the halls at work can do the trick.
6. Listen to music: Listening to upbeat music can help improve your mood and energy levels. Try listening to music while you work or exercise.
7. Change your scenery: If you're feeling stuck in a rut, try changing your scenery. Work from a different location or take a walk outside. A change of environment can help to refresh your mind and body.
If you find yourself continually fighting to keep your eyelids open each afternoon, you may be a great candidate for sessions on a pulsed electro-magnetic field mat (PEMF). Most users sleep better and night as well as notice an increase in energy throughout the day. For more information on a trial period of PEMF use, email [email protected].
