📰 We Remember… Powerful Symbols of Loss and Resilience Mark the 9/11 Memorial Site

9/11 Memorial - Powerful Symbols of Remembrance and Reflection

At the heart of Lower Manhattan, the 9/11 Memorial stands as a solemn tribute to the nearly 3,000 lives lost during one of the darkest days in American history. Located at the former World Trade Center site, the Memorial commemorates the 2,977 victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, as well as the six individuals killed in the 1993 bombing at the same location.

Spanning approximately eight acres, the Memorial features two vast reflecting pools positioned where the Twin Towers once stood. These pools, each nearly an acre in size, showcase the largest man-made waterfalls in North America. Water cascades down their granite walls and disappears into a central void, evoking both absence and the flow of memory. As sunlight plays across the rippling water, the site becomes a space of quiet reflection and reverence.

Names of the victims are inscribed in bronze along the parapets that surround the pools, grouped by the circumstances of their deaths—flights, buildings, and response units. The careful arrangement was finalized after years of consultation and verification, ensuring each name holds its rightful place in history.

Small gestures of remembrance—like roses placed beside names or tiny American flags—appear daily, often marking a birthday or personal connection. Visitors can identify the location of any name through a precise panel system, with each section designated by a letter (N for North Pool, S for South Pool) and a number from 1 to 76.

Since its opening on the 10th anniversary of the attacks in 2011, the 9/11 Memorial has served as both a place of mourning and a symbol of enduring resilience, honoring those who were lost and the lives forever changed.

Lake County Lighthouses to Be Featured in PBS Documentary Series

Two of Lake County’s historic lighthouses will be highlighted in a new public television series exploring Ohio’s Lake Erie shoreline.

WBGU-PBS, affiliated with Bowling Green State University, is releasing a three-part documentary titled "Illuminating The Great Lakes: Lighthouses of Lake Erie." The Fairport Harbor Marine Museum and Lighthouse and Fairport Harbor West Breakwater Lighthouse are among eight featured sites.

The series airs on WBGU Thursdays at 9 p.m. and Saturdays at 3:30 p.m., starting September 11, and runs for three weeks. It can also be livestreamed at wbgu.org/live or streamed on the PBS app and YouTube.

Each episode covers a theme:

🌳 Mentor Reminds Residents to Trim Trees Hanging Over Roads and Sidewalks

City of Mentor

Mentor Residents Reminded to Maintain Trees Along Streets and Sidewalks

As the vibrant colors of fall begin to appear, the City of Mentor is reminding residents to check their trees—especially those located along sidewalks and roads—for proper maintenance.

Many of Mentor’s neighborhoods are home to mature, well-established trees that contribute to the city’s charm and character. However, overgrown branches can pose safety hazards, particularly when they hang too low over streets or sidewalks. To keep the community safe and accessible, property owners are responsible for trimming any trees located on their property, including those on the city-owned “tree lawn” between the sidewalk and street.

City officials conduct annual inspections across all neighborhoods to ensure trees do not obstruct traffic or pedestrian pathways. In some cases, residents may receive a notice if their trees are found to be encroaching on these areas.

According to city ordinance, trees must be trimmed to provide a minimum clearance of 14 feet above roadways and 7 feet above sidewalks. These requirements help ensure clear passage for vehicles, delivery trucks, school buses, and pedestrians, including those using mobility aids or strollers.

Residents are encouraged to inspect their trees and arrange for trimming if needed. Those with questions or seeking clarification can contact the City of Mentor’s Code Enforcement office at (440) 974-5740 or via email at [email protected].

⚾ Royals Rally Late to Top Guardians 4-3 Behind Witt and Garcia

Royals Rally in Seventh to Edge Guardians 4-3, Ramirez Injured

A seventh-inning surge lifted the Kansas City Royals to a 4-3 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday at Kauffman Stadium, highlighted by Maikel Garcia’s tying homer and Bobby Witt Jr.’s go-ahead RBI double.

Garcia led off the inning with a 405-foot solo blast to even the score. Cavan Biggio followed with a single and was replaced by Dairon Blanco, who stole second and scored on Witt’s two-out double to left.

The Guardians had taken a 3-1 lead with early offense, including Bo Naylor’s RBI single and a solo homer from Steven Kwan. Kansas City stayed close thanks to RBI singles from Salvador Perez in the fourth and sixth innings.

Royals starter Seth Lugo allowed three runs over five innings. Daniel Lynch IV pitched two perfect innings for the win, while Carlos Estévez secured the save. Guardians starter Gavin Williams gave up two runs across five innings.

Cleveland’s José Ramírez exited in the sixth with a sprained wrist, suffered while stealing in the third.

Kansas City’s top four hitters—Jonathan India, Witt, Vinnie Pasquantino, and Perez—combined for five hits and five RBI.

The series concludes Sunday with Tanner Bibee facing Michael Wacha.
