📰 Old Village Corridor May See New Life with Housing and Retail Plan

Mentor Eyes Old Village Redevelopment with Retail-Residential Project

Mentor is considering a plan to redevelop part of its Old Village corridor with a four-story building that would bring 45 apartments and ground-level retail to a long-vacant stretch of Mentor Avenue.

City Council recently reviewed the first reading of an ordinance to rezone 1.34 acres for the project. The proposed zoning change would allow mixed-use development with parking behind the structure, including an underground garage. The design aims to reflect the area's historic character while adding modern functionality.

Submitted by Geis Companies and Uptown Mentor LLC, the project also includes landscaping and streetscape upgrades to better integrate with nearby neighborhoods and boost foot traffic.

The Planning Commission has already recommended approval. A public hearing is set for September 16, after which the project would still need final site plan approval. No construction timeline has been set.

City officials must also designate the parcel as “economically distressed,” a requirement under local development rules. The buildings on-site have been vacant for over 20 years and were previously considered unsafe.

If approved, the development would support Mentor’s housing goals and mark a significant investment in revitalizing the Old Village.

City Council Meeting Scheduled for Sept 16 @ 7pm

🏈 Cardinals Stay Perfect, Dominate Brunswick in 45-7 Win

Mentor improved to 4-0 on the season with a commanding 45-7 win over visiting Brunswick on Sept. 12 at Jerome T. Osborne Sr. Stadium. The Cardinals took control early and never looked back.

Mentor built a 38-0 halftime lead, powered by three rushing touchdowns from RB Jackson Farley. He opened the scoring with a 10-yard run, then added touchdowns from 1 and 17 yards out to quickly push the lead to 21-0.

The Cardinals continued to pile on with a 6-yard touchdown run from RB Dominic Burns, a 4-yard touchdown catch by WR Justen Hodge from quarterback Brogan Jones, and a 41-yard field goal from Danny Kristo.

In the third quarter, Burns broke free for a 70-yard touchdown run down the sideline, extending Mentor’s lead even further.

Brunswick’s lone score came in the fourth quarter on a touchdown pass from QB Sean Barnett to Cohen Easa. The loss drops Brunswick to 1-3 on the year.

Up next, Mentor will host Medina in a key matchup next Friday, while Brunswick travels to face Shaker Heights.

🏈 Lake Catholic Rolls Past Gilmour With Early Surge, Wins 31-14

Lake Catholic Cruises Past Gilmour With Early Surge and Steady Defense

Lake Catholic extended its winning streak to three games with a 31-14 victory at Gilmour Academy on Sept. 12, using a fast offensive start and solid defense to stay in control throughout.

In just the second-ever meeting between the schools — and the first since 1972 — the Cougars jumped to a 14-0 first-quarter lead. Senior Michael Valentino opened the scoring on a 26-yard touchdown run, and senior Pete Malchesky followed with an 11-yard run after a defensive stop and short punt.

Gilmour responded in the second quarter with a 90-yard drive, capped by a 2-yard touchdown run from Dom Dunlevy to make it 14-7. Lake Catholic answered just before halftime with a ground-heavy 68-yard drive, ending in a 1-yard score by junior Danny Zmorowski.

Early in the third quarter, a 37-yard screen pass helped set up a 34-yard field goal from junior Gavyn Fredriks to extend the Cougars' lead. Gilmour mounted a 16-play drive but turned the ball over on downs at the Lake Catholic 18-yard line.

The Cougars added to their lead in the fourth with a 4-yard touchdown run by junior Brady Moran. Gilmour closed the game with a late 16-yard touchdown run by junior Nathan Lennon.

Zmorowski led Lake Catholic with 87 rushing yards on 17 carries. Quarterback Max Pisano went 6-of-9 for 93 yards. Malchesky contributed three catches and an interception. Gilmour quarterback Sean Pitrone threw for 117 yards, and Lennon added 42 rushing yards and a score.

Lake Catholic (3-1) faces undefeated Benedictine on Sept. 19 at John Carroll University.

⚾ Tanner Bibee Fires Two-Hit Shutout as Guardians Silence White Sox 4-0

Bibee Fires Two-Hit Shutout

Tanner Bibee delivered a dominant two-hit shutout Friday night, leading the Cleveland Guardians to a 4-0 win over the Chicago White Sox. It was the team’s first complete-game shutout in six years.

Bibee struck out 10 without issuing a walk, earning his second complete game of the season and his first career nine-inning shutout — the first by a Cleveland pitcher since 2019.

He faced just 29 batters, allowing singles in the third before inducing a double play. Only an error in the sixth and a hit batter in the ninth disrupted an otherwise flawless outing.

Cleveland’s offense broke through in the fourth with a two-out homer by David Fry. Austin Hedges and Nolan Jones followed with RBI singles in the fifth and sixth, and Angel Martínez added a solo home run in the eighth.

Chicago’s Martín Pérez allowed three runs over 6 2/3 innings in his sixth start since returning from injury. He hasn’t won since his season debut in March.

The Guardians, now 76-71, have won seven of eight. White Sox rookie Kyle Teel saw his 20-game on-base streak end, and the team was shut out for the 15th time this season.

How 433 Investors Unlocked 400X Return Potential

Institutional investors back startups to unlock outsized returns. Regular investors have to wait. But not anymore. Thanks to regulatory updates, some companies are doing things differently.

Take Revolut. In 2016, 433 regular people invested an average of $2,730. Today? They got a 400X buyout offer from the company, as Revolut’s valuation increased 89,900% in the same timeframe.

Founded by a former Zillow exec, Pacaso’s co-ownership tech reshapes the $1.3T vacation home market. They’ve earned $110M+ in gross profit to date, including 41% YoY growth in 2024 alone. They even reserved the Nasdaq ticker PCSO.

The same institutional investors behind Uber, Venmo, and eBay backed Pacaso. And you can join them. But not for long. Pacaso’s investment opportunity ends September 18.
