🦌 Mentor Reminds Residents of Fall Safety, Solicitation, and Hunting Guidelines

City of Mentor

As the fall season begins, the City of Mentor is reminding residents of several important public safety and community guidelines.

Streetlight Outages
Streetlights are maintained by First Energy, but if you notice one that’s burned out, you can report it to Public Works at the number above. Be prepared to provide an accurate location description so the issue can be addressed efficiently.

Solicitation Rules
Door-to-door solicitation in Mentor requires a valid solicitor’s permit from the Police Department. Approved solicitors may operate between 9 AM and 7 PM but are not allowed to approach homes with a “No Solicitors” sign. These signs are available at the Mentor Police Department, at City Hall, or as a printable download on the city’s Ordinances page. To report unauthorized solicitation, call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at (440) 255-1234.

Deer Hunting Season Applications
Applications for the 2025–2026 Deer Bow Hunting season are now available. Forms can be picked up at the front desk of the Mentor Municipal Center or downloaded from mentornature.com. Hunting is only permitted on properties with landowner consent, and an archery proficiency test form must accompany your application.

Dead Animals or Road Debris
If you come across a dead animal or debris on city roads, you're encouraged to report it promptly. During regular business hours (7 AM to 4 PM), contact the Public Works Department at (440) 974-5781. Outside of those hours, please call the Police Department at (440) 255-1234.

Back to School: Drive Safely
With students back in class, the Mentor Police Department is urging drivers to slow down in school zones. The 20 mph speed limit will be strictly enforced during active school zone hours. Motorists are asked to remain vigilant and do their part to ensure student safety throughout the city.

🔥 Major Fire Disrupts Painesville Township; Smoke Seen for Miles

Courtesy: Painesville Township Fire Department

A large commercial fire broke out on the afternoon of September 12 in eastern Painesville Township, prompting a major emergency response and temporary road closures. The blaze originated at an auto repair business located in the 1500 block of North Ridge Road, between Mantle Road and Fairport Nursery Road (State Route 535).

Thick, dark smoke billowed from the scene, visible across several parts of the township—including from Riverside Drive near the Lake County History Center. Authorities quickly closed the affected stretch of North Ridge Road to ensure public safety and facilitate emergency operations.

All four of Painesville Township's fire stations responded to the incident, with off-duty personnel recalled to assist in battling the flames. Mutual aid from neighboring departments was also requested due to the size and intensity of the fire. One person was injured and taken to a local hospital.

Firefighters remained on site throughout the afternoon as containment efforts continued. Officials urged the public to avoid the area to protect both civilian and firefighter safety.

🏘️ Ohio Home Prices Outpace U.S. Average as National Growth Slows

Home Price Growth Slows, but Ohio Holds Steady

After years of rapid increases fueled by record-low mortgage rates, U.S. home price growth is finally easing. Nationally, prices rose just 1.4% year-over-year in July, according to Cotality’s Home Price Index. That marks the slowest pace since before the pandemic boom.

Still, the picture looks different across the country — and in Ohio.

Ohio’s Housing Market

In July, Ohio home prices grew 3.75% year-over-year and ticked up 0.11% month-over-month. That’s well above the national average and a sign that demand remains steady across much of the Buckeye State. While prices aren’t climbing at the double-digit rates seen during 2020–21, Ohio homeowners are still seeing solid gains compared to some parts of the country where prices are flat or falling.

Regional Highlights

  • Top annual gains: New Jersey (6.33%), Connecticut (6.23%), South Dakota (6.23%), Rhode Island (5.94%), and West Virginia (5.67%).

  • States with declines: Florida fell the furthest at -2.55%, followed by Washington, D.C. (-1.51%), Montana (-0.60%), Texas (-0.35%), Colorado (-0.04%), and Arizona (-0.01%).

  • Biggest monthly movers: South Dakota homes jumped 2.6% in July, while Vermont saw the steepest monthly drop at -0.81%.

Why the Shift?

Affordability is driving demand in many Midwest markets, including Ohio. Smaller cities and towns are drawing buyers who have been priced out of coastal states. At the same time, mortgage rates recently hit their lowest level in nearly a year, giving buyers more breathing room.

Looking Ahead

Cotality forecasts national prices will rise 3.9% by July 2026. Ohio is expected to continue posting steady gains, though at a more manageable pace than in recent years.

What Buyers Should Know

  • Ohio remains affordable. While prices are rising, they’re still far more accessible compared to many states in the Northeast and West Coast.

  • Opportunities vary. Sellers in Ohio are benefiting from continued demand, while buyers may still find negotiating power in slower-moving markets nearby.

  • Local data matters. Conditions can shift quickly between metro areas — Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati may see different patterns than smaller communities.

For Ohioans, the takeaway is clear: the market has cooled nationally, but here at home, housing values remain on solid footing.

⚾ Naylor Powers Guardians Past White Sox for Sweep and Wild Card Push

Naylor's Big Bat Lifts Guardians to 3-2 Win and Sweep Over White Sox

Bo Naylor played the hero on Sunday, driving in all three runs for the Cleveland Guardians, including a decisive solo home run in the seventh inning that sealed a 3-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox and completed a three-game sweep at Progressive Field.

Cleveland’s young catcher delivered a two-run double in the fourth to give his team a temporary lead, then broke a 2-2 tie with a deep shot to right-center field for his 12th home run of the season. The blast came off a high sinker and marked a turning point in a tightly contested game.

Miguel Vargas contributed with two hits for Chicago, including a fourth-inning RBI double. Chase Meidroth tied the game briefly with a solo homer in the fifth, keeping the White Sox within striking distance.

On the mound, Matt Festa earned the win in relief, while Cade Smith locked down his 15th save by forcing a crucial groundout to strand runners at the corners in the ninth with help from an amazing diving stop by Brayan Rocchio to end the game.

Cleveland has now won four straight and nine of their last ten games, tightening the race for the final American League wild card spot. They trail the Houston Astros by just 2.5 games.

🏈 Ravens Dominate Fourth Quarter to Rout Browns

Jackson tosses 4 TDs as Ravens roll past Browns, 41-17

The Ravens closed strong to secure their first win of the season, defeating the Cleveland Browns 41-17 on Sunday.

Lamar Jackson threw four touchdown passes, and Baltimore’s defense pressured Joe Flacco throughout his return to Charm City. After blowing a late lead in Buffalo last week, the Ravens (1-1) pulled away with 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter.

Baltimore managed just 81 yards in the first half but capitalized on mistakes. A blocked punt set up Jackson’s first touchdown to Tylan Wallace, and Nate Wiggins’ interception return led to a short scoring toss to Devontez Walker. Roquan Smith later returned a fumble 63 yards for a touchdown.

Jackson connected again with Walker and DeAndre Hopkins in the fourth to seal the win. Hopkins’ 23-yard grab capped the surge.

Flacco finished 25 of 45 for 199 yards with one touchdown, one interception, and a fumble. Cleveland (0-2) limited Derrick Henry to 23 rushing yards, but its offense sputtered. Rookie QB Dillon Gabriel replaced Flacco late, throwing an 8-yard touchdown to Dylan Sampson.

Injuries included concussions for Browns WR DeAndre Carter and Ravens RB Rasheen Ali. Baltimore also lost LB Kyle Van Noy (hamstring) and CB Marlon Humphrey (groin).

Next up: The Browns host Green Bay, while the Ravens face Detroit on Monday night.
