Headlands Birding Festival 2025

Headlands Birding Festival Returns for Second Year, Sept. 19–21

The Headlands Birding Festival is set to return for its second year this fall, running from September 19 through 21, 2025. Hosted by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and Headlands Beach State Park, the event celebrates the awe-inspiring fall migration of birds through one of Ohio's most vibrant wildlife corridors.

Held across multiple locations in the Headlands/Mentor Marsh region, the festival showcases the impressive biodiversity of Lake County, where over 350 bird species have been recorded. Designed for birdwatchers and nature lovers of all ages and skill levels, the festival offers a packed weekend of guided bird walks, expert talks, vendor exhibits, and hands-on experiences.

The weekend kicks off Friday evening at Springbrook Gardenhouse with a happy hour at 5:30 PM, followed by a keynote address from renowned naturalist, writer, and artist Julie Zickefoose. Attendees will also enjoy wine tastings from Northeast Ohio wineries.

Saturday’s schedule features a birding boat trip along the Lake Erie coast (registration required), as well as expert-led excursions at local hotspots like Mentor Marsh, Lake Erie Bluffs, Chagrin River Park, and more. The "Big Sit" with Blackbrook Audubon near Parking Lot 1 will offer a relaxed yet productive way to observe migrating birds. From 12 PM to 4 PM, Headlands Beach State Park will host food trucks, nature-themed vendors, and educational booths. Expert presentations on bird identification, habitat restoration, and birding technology will run in the afternoon.

Sunday wraps up the weekend with a bird banding demonstration, a Lake Erie flight-watch, and exclusive access to birding sites in Mentor Marsh. Additional local walks are also on the schedule.

Organized in partnership with a wide range of conservation organizations and community partners, the festival is supported by local sponsors and volunteers. Those interested in helping with the event are encouraged to sign up through the official website.

šŸ• 🐈 Lake Humane Society Hosts Free Pet Vaccine Clinic in Willoughby

Lake Humane Society Offers Free Pet Vaccines at Willoughby Clinic

The Lake Humane Society recently hosted a free mobile vaccine clinic at the McKinley Community Outreach Center in Willoughby on September 9, providing free vaccinations and low-cost services to pet owners.

Supported by a Petco Love grant, the clinic was open to all and allowed multiple pets per household, with enough vaccines on hand for 100 animals. This event is part of an ongoing effort to make pet care more accessible across Lake County.

A similar clinic held in July at the society’s Mentor location also served over 100 pets. By rotating locations, the Lake Humane Society aims to reach residents who may not be able to travel far for care.

The organization plans to continue offering these free clinics four times per year. Its main facility at 7564 Tyler Boulevard in Mentor now also provides affordable wellness services five days a week and two Saturdays a month.

With these efforts, Lake Humane hopes to help people maintain lasting, healthy relationships with their pets by removing financial barriers to basic care.

Ultra-Processed Foods Dominate American Diet, CDC Finds

More than half of Americans’ daily calories come from ultra-processed foods, according to newly released data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These foods—often inexpensive, heavily altered from their natural state, and laden with additives like sugar, salt, and preservatives—are a staple of modern diets, especially among young people.

The CDC report, which analyzed data from 2021 to 2023, found that roughly 55% of the average daily caloric intake in the U.S. comes from ultra-processed foods. For children and teens, the number is even higher, nearing 62%, while adults average 53%. Though consumption levels remain high, the data shows a slight decline since 2017–2018, offering a modest sign of progress.

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has made reforming the nation’s food system a central focus of his tenure. Under his leadership, the ā€œMake America Healthy Againā€ commission identified ultra-processed foods as a leading driver of chronic illnesses, such as obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. A follow-up report outlining strategies to tackle childhood disease is expected soon.

These processed foods—ranging from sweetened beverages and baked goods to packaged snacks and sandwiches—are often designed for long shelf lives and consumer appeal. Yet studies continue to connect them to worsening health outcomes. Notably, a landmark National Institutes of Health study highlighted significant health risks associated with high consumption levels. The lead researcher behind that study recently left his post, citing concerns about political pressure.

Despite the criticism, some experts argue that not all ultra-processed items are inherently harmful. Products like certain yogurts or whole-grain breads may contain nutritional benefits. Even so, public health advocates point out that the overwhelming presence of highly engineered foods in American diets is contributing to a national health crisis.

Government agencies are now considering revising the definition of "ultra-processed" and plan to update national dietary guidelines later this year. The USDA and HHS are also boosting nutrition research in an effort to better understand the biological effects of these foods.

Income plays a role as well: among adults, higher earners consume fewer ultra-processed calories. However, among children, intake remains consistently high regardless of income level. With 20% of U.S. children now classified as obese, Kennedy’s efforts to rein in food industry practices—from limiting additives to banning soda purchases with food stamps—are gaining traction.

Some researchers and officials are even beginning to treat ultra-processed food as potentially addictive. While debate continues, growing consensus suggests that the U.S. must take decisive steps to reduce the nation’s dependence on these products for the sake of long-term health.

⚾ Cleveland Stays Hot with Extra-Inning Rally Against Tigers

Guardians Top Tigers, Win 10th in 11 Games

The Cleveland Guardians edged the Detroit Tigers 7-5 in extra innings Tuesday night, fueled by a rare offensive burst that extended their winning streak to five games.

In the 10th inning, Cleveland’s first four batters—Steven Kwan, Angel Martinez, JosĆ© RamĆrez, and Kyle Manzardo—delivered consecutive extra-base hits, the first time the team has done so in extra innings since 1961. The sequence pushed the Guardians ahead 7-3.

Detroit responded with a two-run homer by Spencer Torkelson in the bottom half, but the comeback fell short.

Kerry Carpenter tied the game in the ninth for the Tigers with a pinch-hit homer off reliever Cade Smith, who blew his sixth save of the season. Earlier, Cleveland had built a 3-1 lead with a Gabriel Arias homer and an RBI double from Bo Naylor. Detroit cut into the lead with a groundout RBI by Dillon Dingler.

The Guardians improved to an MLB-best 11-6 in extra innings and moved within 5½ games of the AL Central-leading Tigers. They also gained ground in the AL Wild Card race.

Players wore No. 21 in honor of Roberto Clemente Day, though Tigers rookie Jackson Jobe—who normally wears the number—remains out with a season-ending injury.
