šŸ“° Mentor Council Greenlights Uptown Redevelopment, Woodhill Sparks Frustration

Mentor Council Advances Redevelopment, Debates Rentals, and Addresses Resident Concerns

Mentor City Council approved Ordinance 25-086, clearing the way for a major redevelopment in the Old Village commercial corridor. The plan designates properties near Little Mountain and Route 20 as economically distressed, enabling a mixed-use overlay zone. Aging single-story buildings will be replaced with modern structures combining retail and residential space. The ordinance passed unanimously.

Council also debated Ordinance 25-088, aimed at lifting Mentor’s ban on short-term rentals. The proposed changes would allow up to eight permits per ward, require annual inspections, and restrict rentals to specific residential districts. Resident Jake Banic spoke in support, highlighting a decade of quiet operation and community benefits. The ordinance lacked enough votes to proceed and will return for a second reading.

In other business, council approved Resolution 25-R115 to assess homeowners for sidewalk repairs in zones 1D and 1E. Over 1,200 slabs were replaced across 446 properties, totaling $370,000.

City officials announced several updates: the Headlands Birding Festival (Sept. 19–21), a hazardous waste collection (Sept. 20), and open registration for the Citizens Police Academy. A public meeting for Mentor’s comprehensive land use plan is scheduled for Oct. 1.

Finally, council revisited a persistent sewer odor in the Woodhill area. Residents remain frustrated after a year without resolution. Officials are considering external assistance if Lake County Utilities can’t identify the source.

šŸš‡ Laketran Adds Sunday Service to Support Seniors, Workers, and Community

Laketran Expands Dial-a-Ride to Sundays, Improving Access for Seniors, Workers, and Residents in Need

Starting Sunday, September 28, 2025, Laketran will operate its Dial-a-Ride paratransit service seven days a week, with new Sunday hours from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The expansion aims to reduce social isolation for seniors and individuals with disabilities, while also providing better access to jobs and essential services.

The Sunday service will help riders attend religious services, visit family, go shopping, and get to work—activities many previously struggled to manage without reliable transportation. Saturday hours for both Dial-a-Ride and Local Routes will also be extended to 6:00 a.m.–9:00 p.m., enhancing options for weekend workers.

According to recent surveys, 70% of Laketran riders feel restricted on Sundays, and 60% report having no transportation at all. The expanded schedule responds to these long-standing concerns and reflects one of the most frequent service requests from the community.

Dial-a-Ride remains Laketran’s signature door-to-door service, available to seniors, people with disabilities, and the general public across Lake County. The seven-day availability supports greater mobility, workforce participation, and community connection.

Residents can now schedule Sunday rides. More information is available at www.laketran.com or by calling 440-354-6100.

Long-Lost Dog Reunites with New York Family After 11 Years Thanks to Microchip

After more than a decade apart, a New York woman has been reunited with her dog, Snuggles, who went missing as a puppy 11 years ago.

The unexpected reunion began when the City of Buffalo Animal Shelter received a dog dropped off by a Good Samaritan. As part of the intake process, staff scanned the animal for a microchip and discovered contact information linked to Chantel Stroud. She was quickly identified as the daughter of Melanie Epperson, the dog's original owner.

Snuggles had disappeared back in 2014 while Epperson was helping her grandson move into a new home. Despite extensive searching, the dog never turned up. With each passing season—especially the cold winters Epperson feared Snuggles would dislike—hope gradually faded.

So when Stroud received the call from the shelter in March 2025 asking if she recognized the dog’s name, she was stunned. After confirming her identity and connection to Epperson, the shelter shared the incredible news: Snuggles had been found alive and well.

The emotional reunion followed shortly after, with Epperson expressing joy and disbelief at having her long-lost pet back. Now a senior dog, Snuggles may still have several good years ahead, and Epperson is ready to cherish every one of them.

The story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of microchipping pets. According to data from veterinary organizations, microchipped dogs are more than twice as likely to be returned to their owners compared to those without chips.

⚾ Cleveland Closes Division Gap with 4-0 Shutout in Detroit

Guardians Shut Out Tigers as Williams Extends Dominance in Sixth Straight Win

Gavin Williams struck out nine over five shutout innings as the Cleveland Guardians beat the Detroit Tigers 4-0 on Wednesday night, securing their sixth consecutive win and 11th in their last 12 games. The victory pulls Cleveland within 4.5 games of first place in the AL Central, with three more games against Detroit next week.

Williams (11-5), making his 30th start of the season, allowed just three hits and two walks. Five relievers completed the shutout, while Tigers starter Jack Flaherty (8-14) gave up one run in five innings.

George Valera opened the scoring with an RBI single in the third. Gabriel Arias doubled, stole third, and scored on Angel MartĆnez’s sixth-inning single. Bo Naylor added a two-run single in the ninth.

Cleveland had a chance to break the game open in the fifth after putting two on with no outs, but a bunt attempt and back-to-back strikeouts ended the threat.

Detroit was limited offensively, putting only two runners in scoring position through six innings. Their best chance came in the seventh with two walks, but a popout and groundout ended the inning.

Williams has now thrown 20 straight scoreless innings against the Tigers dating back to July 2024.
