📰 $25 Million Payment Reduces Lake County Jail Construction Debt

lakecountyohio.gov

Lake County has paid off $25 million of the $50 million in short-term notes used to fund construction of the new Lake County Public Safety Center. The update was presented during a recent county commissioners meeting, highlighting continued efforts to reduce debt while investing in critical infrastructure.

Set to open in summer 2027, the 250,000-square-foot facility will expand jail capacity from 355 to 504 beds and house the sheriff’s office. It will offer improved services for mental health, addiction treatment, medical care, and post-release supervision.

The project is part of a broader funding strategy that includes bonds for road and sewer upgrades. The county’s Aa1 bond rating was recently reaffirmed by Moody’s, reflecting sound financial management.

The new jail replaces a facility built in 1990, which now faces overcrowding and outdated infrastructure. Today’s inmate population is larger, includes more women, and has shifted from mostly misdemeanors to mostly felonies. Two-thirds of inmates also face mental health or substance use issues, reinforcing the need for expanded treatment services.

📰 City of Mentor Earns Elite Statewide Designation for Life Sciences Readiness

City of Mentor

Mentor Recognized as a Premier Life Science Ready Community

The City of Mentor has earned a significant distinction, being named a Premier Life Sciences Ready Community by the Ohio Life Sciences Association (OLS). This elite designation recognizes communities in Ohio that demonstrate strong infrastructure, business readiness, and community support to attract and sustain life sciences companies.

Modeled after Massachusetts’ acclaimed BioReady® Community Program, the initiative evaluates municipalities based on their capabilities to support life sciences growth. Among all of northern Ohio, Mentor is the only city to receive this top-tier designation, joining Mason and New Albany as the state’s first recognized Premier Life Sciences Ready Communities.

Mentor has long been a powerhouse in advanced manufacturing, with a robust network of companies involved in research and development, engineering, and metalworking. These firms serve a variety of high-tech sectors, including aerospace, chemicals, and biomedical technology. One of the city's most prominent success stories is STERIS Corporation, a global leader in life sciences and healthcare, which was founded in Mentor in 1985.

With over 300 manufacturers operating locally, Mentor ranks 7th in Ohio for the number of manufacturing businesses and 8th in manufacturing employment. The city ships more than $2.5 billion in manufactured goods annually, underscoring its role as a vital economic driver in Northeast Ohio.

This new designation affirms Mentor’s position as a dynamic hub for innovation and industry, strengthening its appeal to national and international life sciences companies.

⚾ Naylor Delivers Again as Guardians Top Twins for Eighth Straight Win

The Cleveland Guardians extended their winning streak to eight games with a 6-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Friday night, thanks to a clutch performance from Bo Naylor.

Naylor drove in four runs with a pair of two-run singles, including the go-ahead hit in the eighth that snapped a 2-2 tie. The win moved the Guardians (82-71) within 2.5 games of the AL Central-leading Tigers and 1.5 games of the final wild card spot. Cleveland has now won 13 of its last 14 games.

José Ramírez jump-started the eighth-inning rally with a two-out double. After he and Kyle Manzardo pulled off back-to-back steals, Naylor singled to right, putting the Guardians up 4-2. Steven Kwan and Angel Martínez added insurance with RBI doubles in the ninth.

Earlier, Naylor had given Cleveland a 2-0 lead in the first with a two-out single. Minnesota tied the game in the sixth on a wild pitch and an RBI single by Royce Lewis.

Guardians rookie Parker Messick struck out nine over 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits. Jakob Junis pitched two hitless innings to earn the win. Twins starter Pablo López exited after four innings due to right forearm tightness, continuing his slow return from a shoulder injury.

🏈 Mentor Steamrolls Medina 49-0 in Homecoming Rout

Cardinals Dominate Medina in Commanding 49-0 Homecoming Win

The Mentor Cardinals made their homecoming game a night to remember on Sept. 19, delivering a dominant 49-0 shutout against the visiting Medina Bees at Jerome T. Osborne Stadium. With the win, Mentor remains unbeaten at 5-0 overall and 2-0 in Greater Cleveland Conference play.

Despite Medina starting the game with possession, it was Mentor that quickly seized control. The Cardinals erupted for five touchdowns in the first quarter alone, overwhelming the Bees with explosive plays and defensive pressure. The fast start left no room for suspense as Mentor built a commanding lead early and never looked back.

Senior running back Jackson Farley powered the offense in the opening frame, rushing for touchdowns of 20, 4, and 59 yards. His second score came after an interception by senior defensive back Drew Morgan, setting up a short field for the Cardinals. Farley’s final touchdown of the night, the 59-yard burst, helped extend Mentor’s lead to 21-0 before the first quarter was even halfway over.

As Mentor’s offense piled on the points, the defense consistently harassed Medina quarterback River Blomquist, disrupting the Bees’ passing game and forcing mistakes. One such pressure led to a 19-yard interception return for a touchdown by senior linebacker Carson Wolk, pushing the lead to 35-0 by the end of the first quarter.

Junior quarterback Brogan Jones added to the scoring with a 31-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Justen Jones, while two more rushing touchdowns followed in the second quarter—one from sophomore Braylen Callahan and another from senior Dominic Burns. By halftime, the Cardinals had secured a 49-point lead.

With the mercy rule in effect, the entire second half was played with a running clock, offering Mentor the chance to rotate in second-string players and backups across the board. The game served as a valuable opportunity for younger athletes to gain experience in a live-game setting.

Mentor now shifts its focus to the next test—a road game against Cleveland Heights on Sept. 26.

🏈 Lake Catholic Survives Benedictine in Turnover-Filled 6-3 Battle

Turnovers Doom Benedictine as Lake Catholic Escapes with 6-3 Victory

In a gritty defensive battle, Lake Catholic held off Benedictine 6-3 Friday night at John Carroll University, thanks to two game-changing plays from senior Petey Malchesky and a late goal-line fumble recovery.

With under five minutes left, Benedictine faced fourth-and-1 on Lake Catholic’s 5-yard line. After converting the first down, tight end Sean O’Connell fumbled, and Lake Catholic recovered at the 1-yard line. The Cougars ran out the clock to secure the win.

Malchesky’s 64-yard touchdown reception from sophomore quarterback Max Pisano on Lake Catholic’s opening drive was the only touchdown of the game. Later, his leaping fourth-quarter interception halted a promising Benedictine drive.

The Cougars, improved to 4-1. Benedictine also sits at 4-1 after a turnover-heavy loss. Both teams entered the game averaging four touchdowns per outing, but Friday turned into a showcase of defensive grit.

Lake Catholic’s defense stepped up when it mattered most, despite the offense struggling with turnovers, including two first-half interceptions and a muffed punt. Benedictine also struggled to protect the ball, fumbling multiple times and throwing a crucial interception late.

Both teams found some rhythm in the run game. Lake Catholic’s junior running back Danny Zmorowski rushed for 75 yards, while Benedictine’s Corde Blair and Kayden Forte combined for over 100 yards.

The Cougars face Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy next.
