šŸ“° Old Village Gets a Fresh Start: Uptown Redevelopment Approved

Uptown Redevelopment Moves Forward in Old Village

Mentor City Council has approved a major step toward revitalizing the Old Village commercial corridor with the advancement of the Uptown Redevelopment Project.

Council unanimously passed Ordinance 25-086, officially designating several parcels near Little Mountain Road and Route 20 as economically distressed. This designation makes it possible to apply a mixed-use overlay zone, paving the way for redevelopment.

The project will transform the stretch of aging, single-story commercial buildings into a vibrant mixed-use destination. Plans call for ground-floor shops, restaurants, and other commercial spaces, with residential units on the upper floors. Officials noted that the buildings in the area have been long overdue for replacement and described the project as an opportunity to bring new life and energy to the district.

The Uptown Redevelopment has been in discussion for several years, with city leaders working alongside stakeholders to ensure the project meets both economic and community goals. In addition to modernizing the corridor, the initiative is expected to address environmental concerns, improve neighborhood appeal, and attract further investment to the Old Village.

With council’s approval, planning and development can now move forward, marking a transformative moment for Mentor’s historic commercial heart.

šŸ‘®šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø Mentor-on-the-Lake’s Lt. Messinger Earns Elite FBI Trilogy Leadership Certification

Mentor-on-the-Lake Police Department

Mentor-on-the-Lake Police Lt. Tina Messinger has completed the FBI Trilogy program, a respected leadership development series offered by the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association (LEEDA). The program equips law enforcement professionals with advanced leadership training across three key areas.

The Trilogy includes 120 hours of accredited instruction through three courses:

  • Supervisor Leadership Institute – Focused on foundational leadership for supervisors and middle managers.

  • Command Leadership Institute – Prepares participants for command roles with emphasis on team leadership and decision-making.

  • Executive Leadership Institute – Addresses high-level leadership challenges and the future of law enforcement.

Messinger highlighted the program’s value in improving law enforcement management and fostering collaboration nationwide. With this accomplishment, she now holds over 300 hours of leadership and supervisory training in her career.

She credited Police Chief John Forsythe and her team for their ongoing support and emphasized the importance of the networking opportunities the program offered. Insights from other agencies, she noted, could help enhance practices within the Mentor-on-the-Lake department.

🧳 FIFA World Cup 2026 Sparks Travel Surge Among Younger, Diverse Audiences

As summer gives way to fall, American travel sentiment remains stable, even as some travelers begin tightening their budgets. According to the latest State of the American Traveler report, financial confidence is holding steady despite minor dips, and travel activity continues to exceed last year’s levels.

While younger generations remain optimistic, they are also the most budget-conscious. Millennials, in particular, are leading in adopting cost-saving strategies for upcoming trips. In contrast, Baby Boomers—despite being more financially cautious—are planning the highest number of trips, with an average of four leisure getaways anticipated over the next year.

Current travel spending sentiment has seen a slight decline, with 34.9% believing it's a good time to invest in travel, and just over half of travelers (56.5%) listing leisure travel as a high priority in their near-term budgets. This dip may reflect a seasonal shift, as Americans ease out of summer vacation mode and into the rhythm of the school year.

Despite the slight softening in travel enthusiasm, recent travel volume remains strong. Over 50% of travelers reported taking an overnight leisure trip in the past month—still outperforming the same period last year. Looking ahead, more than 90% of travelers plan at least one leisure trip in the next 12 months, with multi-trip averages staying consistent across age groups.

There is also growing interest in upcoming travel tied to cultural and sporting milestones. The centennial celebration of Route 66 in 2026 is drawing attention, especially among Millennials, Gen X, urban travelers, and parents of school-aged children. Half of all respondents expressed interest in traveling to events across the eight states hosting Route 66 festivities.

Interest in historical travel remains varied. While only a small segment (11.5%) is currently interested in America 250 events—commemorating the U.S. semiquincentennial—certain groups, such as Gen X travelers and those in the Northeast, show more enthusiasm.

Meanwhile, excitement is building for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. More than 20% of Americans say they are interested in traveling to attend World Cup matches. These travelers tend to be younger, wealthier, and more diverse, often influenced by social media and more likely to travel with children or in multi-generational groups.

As fall unfolds, tourism marketers and destinations are keeping a close eye on these trends, leveraging them to refine strategies and appeal to evolving traveler mindsets across demographics and seasons.

šŸ“Œ Summary

  • Financial sentiment remains stable among travelers, though slightly softer than summer highs.

  • Overnight leisure travel remains above 2024 levels; over 90% of Americans plan at least one trip in the coming year.

  • Millennials are most likely to implement travel cost-saving measures; Boomers plan the most trips.

  • Interest in the Route 66 Centennial is strong, especially among Millennials, Gen X, urbanites, and parents.

  • America 250 event interest is modest but strongest among Gen X and Northeastern residents.

  • FIFA World Cup 2026 travel shows growing appeal among younger, affluent, and social media-savvy audiences.

⚾ Don’t Look Now… Guardians Close AL Central Gap to One Game

Guardians Stay Hot, Blank Twins in Doubleheader Sweep to Close AL Central Gap

The Cleveland Guardians continued their remarkable late-season surge with a dominant 8-0 win over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday night, completing a day-night doubleheader sweep without allowing a single run. Cleveland also won the opener 6-0, marking its tenth straight victory and 15th in the past 16 games.

With the doubleheader sweep and Detroit’s 6-5 loss to Atlanta earlier in the day, the Guardians have now trimmed what was once a 15-game gap in the AL Central to just one. Cleveland was 11 games behind the Tigers as recently as Sept. 4.

Entering the second game, the Guardians trailed both Boston and Houston by one game in the wild-card race. But following a Houston loss and Cleveland’s win, the Guardians have pulled even with the Astros for the final American League wild-card spot and Cleveland holds the tie breaker.

The team’s five-homer performance in the first game was its most in a single game since April 2021 as they blanked the Twins 6-0. The homeruns were hit by Naylor (2), Jose Ramirez, Schneemann, and rookie George Valera.

Steven Kwan led the offense in the nightcap, tying his season high with four RBIs. He drove in two runs with a single in the fifth and added another two-run single in the eighth. Gabriel Arias contributed a two-run double, while Kyle Manzardo and CJ Kayfus each added RBI singles during a decisive fifth inning that saw Cleveland send 10 batters to the plate.

Logan Allen (8-11) earned his first win since July 29, delivering a career-high eight innings, scattering four hits, and striking out seven. Cleveland’s starting pitchers have now gone 15 straight games allowing two earned runs or fewer—setting a new franchise record.

Minnesota’s Bailey Ober (5-9) struggled again, giving up six runs over five innings. After a strong start to the season, he has just one win in his past 19 outings.

Cleveland’s momentum continues to build as they close in on both a division title and potential postseason berth.
