šŸ‚ Fall Begins: The Autumn Equinox Brings Balance to Earth’s Light and Life

As summer fades, the autumn equinox on September 22 at 2:19 p.m. EDT marks the official start of fall in the Northern Hemisphere. At this moment, the sun shines directly over Earth’s equator, creating nearly equal hours of daylight and darkness worldwide.

Occurring twice a year, in March and September, the equinox happens when Earth’s axis is tilted neither toward nor away from the sun. This balance divides solar exposure evenly between hemispheres—while the north enters fall, the Southern Hemisphere begins spring.

The term "equinox" comes from Latin for ā€œequal night.ā€ Though day and night aren’t exactly 12 hours due to atmospheric refraction, they’re nearly equal, with perfect balance arriving a few days later.

Earth’s consistent 23.5-degree axial tilt causes seasonal shifts as it orbits the sun. During the equinox, the sun rises nearly due east and sets due west for most of the planet.

While astronomers recognize the equinox as the start of fall, meteorologists define the season differently, marking its beginning on August 31 after summer’s hottest months.

Unlike equinoxes, solstices mark the sun’s highest or lowest point in the sky and occur in June and December, signaling the start of summer or winter.

As Earth tilts further from the sun, daylight hours shorten and temperatures drop. This change affects more than just the weather—it can disrupt human sleep and mood, influence animal migration and feeding, and guide farmers in harvesting crops.

The autumn equinox is more than a calendar event—it's a planetary turning point that signals broad changes across nature and daily life.

TL;DR

  • The autumn equinox occurs on Sept. 22 at 2:19 p.m. EDT, marking the start of fall in the Northern Hemisphere.

  • At this moment, the sun sits directly over the equator, creating nearly equal day and night.

  • Earth’s axis is not tilted toward or away from the sun during the equinox.

  • This event also marks the beginning of spring in the Southern Hemisphere.

  • The autumn equinox influences human biology, animal behavior, and farming cycles.

  • While astronomers consider this the start of fall, meteorologists marked the season's start on Aug. 31.

  • Equinoxes differ from solstices, which mark the beginnings of summer and winter.

šŸ“° Lakeland Community College Opens State-of-the-Art Engineering Building

Lakeland Community College

Lakeland Community College has unveiled its newly renovated and expanded Engineering Building, marking a significant step forward in technical education and workforce development in Northeast Ohio.

The $19.6 million project includes a 14,484-square-foot addition and renovation of over 35,000 square feet of existing space—the first major update to the college’s engineering facilities since their original construction. The upgraded building features modern classrooms, high-tech labs, industry-standard equipment, and collaborative learning areas, addressing previous safety and space concerns.

Unveiled on September 9, the project involved input from faculty, advisory committees, lab instructors, and student representatives. Fully ADA-compliant, the ā€œE-Buildingā€ introduces new programs in welding robotics, metrology, and metallurgy—fields aligned with regional workforce demands.

Funding came from multiple sources, including a $4.2 million federal grant, $3.1 million in local funds, $5.2 million in private investment, state capital appropriations, and college financing. The investment also supports the renovation of the Industrial Skills Training Center for Advanced Manufacturing.

Beyond infrastructure, the project strengthens Lakeland’s role as a hub for innovation, education, and community collaboration. It aims to expand partnerships with local businesses, schools, and career centers like the Auburn Career Center, helping meet Northeast Ohio’s critical workforce needs.

šŸ“° Mentor Schools Monitor Impact of Recreational Marijuana One Year In

Mentor Schools See Modest Shift in Drug Incidents One Year After Marijuana Legalization

One year after Ohio legalized recreational marijuana, schools in Mentor and across Northeast Ohio are evaluating its impact on students. In Mentor, drug-related incidents at the high school declined, while middle schools reported eight more cases than the previous year. Other districts reported mixed results: Parma high schools saw a drop, Akron Public Schools saw an increase of 19 cases, and Cleveland and Avon schools noted no significant changes.

Despite these varied outcomes, school leaders remain cautious. Concerns are growing over the normalization of marijuana and its more discreet, potent forms like edibles and vapes, which are harder to detect in schools.

Mental health experts in Northeast Ohio warn that youth exposure to high-THC cannabis is linked to cognitive and psychological risks, including symptoms of psychosis. Though local psychiatric professionals haven't seen a spike in youth cases, they remain concerned about long-term effects on developing brains.

A national nonprofit, Johnny’s Ambassadors, was launched by a grieving mother after her son died following years of cannabis use that began at age 14. The group now works with families nationwide, including in Ohio, to raise awareness about cannabis-related mental health risks in teens.

Retailers emphasize strict ID checks, but critics argue legal products can still reach minors through adults or unsecured storage at home. As legalization continues to evolve, Mentor schools and health officials will keep monitoring trends and reinforcing prevention efforts.

šŸ” A Turning Point: Mortgage Rates Dip as Fed Cuts Spark Optimism

Mortgage Rates Dip in 2025, Offering Relief to Homebuyers

After years of elevated mortgage rates and housing costs, 2025 is finally bringing relief. A September rate cut by the Federal Reserve has pushed borrowing costs lower, improving affordability for buyers across the country.

Current 30-year fixed mortgage rates have dropped below 6.8%, down from highs seen in 2022 and 2023. While still above the all-time low of 2.65% in 2021, today's rates remain close to the long-term average of 7.71%.

Historical trends show rates fluctuate often—peaking at 16.63% in 1981 and reaching record lows during the COVID era. The latest dip may signal more favorable conditions ahead, though much depends on inflation and Fed policy.

Buyers with strong credit can often qualify for rates below the national average, and refinancing remains an option if rates fall further. With increased inventory and stabilizing prices, now may be a strategic time to act for those financially prepared.

⚾ Twins Snap Guardians’ 10-Game Streak, Delay AL Central Tie

The Minnesota Twins halted the Cleveland Guardians’ 10-game winning streak on Sunday with a 6-2 victory, denying Cleveland a chance to tie for the AL Central lead. After being outscored 20-2 in the first three games of the series, the Twins surged late with a go-ahead two-run homer from Brooks Lee in the sixth inning and a pinch-hit three-run blast by Royce Lewis in the seventh.

Cleveland had taken an early 2-0 lead behind a Steven Kwan leadoff homer and Bo Naylor’s sixth consecutive game with an RBI. Minnesota’s comeback began with a Kody Clemens RBI single in the third and was capped by Lee and Lewis' long balls. The Twins snapped a streak of 23 scoreless innings with Clemens’ hit.

Simeon Woods Richardson gave up two runs over five innings, while reliever Kody Funderburk earned the win. The loss dropped Cleveland to 84-72, one game behind Detroit, who was swept by Atlanta. The Guardians host the Tigers next in a key division matchup.

šŸˆ Szmyt’s 55-Yard Field Goal at Buzzer Lifts Browns Over Packers

Rookie kicker Andre Szmyt drilled a 55-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Cleveland Browns to a dramatic 13-10 comeback win over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. It was Cleveland’s first win of the season and ended an eight-game losing streak dating back to 2024.

Down 10-0 with under four minutes remaining, the Browns rallied with a 1-yard touchdown run by Quinshon Judkins and a blocked Packers field goal that set up Szmyt’s game-winner. Grant Delpit’s interception—Cleveland’s first takeaway of the season—sparked the comeback, while Joe Flacco threw for 142 yards to guide the late drive.

Szmyt, who missed critical kicks in Week 1 and lost his mother earlier this summer, was mobbed by teammates after delivering the win, then leapt into the Dawg Pound in celebration.

Green Bay, now 2-1, suffered its first turnover of the season and squandered a 10-point lead late. Cleveland improves to 1-2 and will face the Lions next week.
