📰 Flags, Families, and Pushups: Buddy Check Walk Honors Veterans in Mentor
Veterans and Families Unite in Mentor for Buddy Check Walk
Veterans Park in Mentor hosted the 2nd Annual Buddy Check Veterans Awareness Walk on Sept. 27, bringing together veterans, families, and community supporters to raise awareness for veteran mental health and connect participants to local services.
Among them was 78-year-old Jerry Juncker, a veteran of the 82nd Airborne, who walked 25 miles from Geneva to attend. Before the 2.2-mile walk began, a group of veterans performed 22 pushups to honor the estimated 22 veterans lost to suicide each day.
Organized by Wayne Moynihan of AMVETS Post 109, the event raises both funds for veteran-focused nonprofits and awareness of the challenges veterans face after service. More than 150 American flags were displayed, symbolizing veterans lost in the past week. Along the route, agencies provided information and support to attendees.
The event has grown since its first year, which included 100 walkers and raised $2,000. With participants ranging from toddlers to seniors, organizers hope to expand it further, possibly to a larger venue in the future.
The walk emphasizes unity, remembrance, and the importance of ensuring veterans know they’re never alone.
📰 Guardians Rally Around Fry with Family Support and Postseason Push
David Fry Recovering After Scary Hit-by-Pitch Incident
Cleveland Guardians designated hitter and catcher David Fry is recovering after a frightening moment during last Tuesday’s game against the Detroit Tigers, when a 99 mph fastball struck him in the face. Just five days later, Fry was back in the Guardians clubhouse, joking with teammates and showing signs of good recovery.
The injury occurred in the sixth inning when Fry squared to bunt. As the pitch from Detroit's Tarik Skubal tailed inside, it hit Fry directly in the nose and mouth. He collapsed in the batter’s box, grabbing his bloodied face as team trainers and manager Stephen Vogt rushed to help. Skubal, clearly shaken, threw off his glove and cap.
Fry avoided major injuries but suffered facial swelling and needed stitches in his nose. He is not expected to need surgery and has a follow-up appointment on Thursday.
Fry acknowledged the incident could have been much worse, noting that a slight variation in the ball’s path might have led to serious consequences. At the time, he was trying to bunt and reacted too late to the pitch’s movement.
His wife, Rebekah, who is seven months pregnant, was watching from their home in Louisiana. Despite the alarming scene, she stayed calm and sensed things would be okay. She flew in the next day to be with Fry after his overnight hospital stay. His primary concern, he said, was making sure Rebekah and their daughter, Evelyn, weren’t too distressed.
Evelyn turned two on Saturday. In a heartwarming gesture, the Guardians threw her a birthday party before the game, complete with players singing “Happy Birthday” and a visit from Frozen characters.
That same day, the Guardians clinched a playoff spot with a 3-2 win over the Texas Rangers. While Fry won't be on the postseason roster, his No. 6 jersey remained in the dugout all week, and teammates emphasized his value as both a player and teammate.

🏠 Mortgage Rates Inch Up, But October Could Bring Modest Relief
After a month of steady declines, mortgage rates saw a slight uptick in late September, rising from 6.26% to 6.30% for the average 30-year fixed-rate loan. This minor increase came shortly after the Federal Reserve cut its benchmark rate by 25 basis points. Despite the move, financial markets—already anticipating more aggressive easing—reacted by pushing bond yields and mortgage rates slightly higher.
Still, broader trends hint at continued downward pressure. Economic indicators, including weaker job growth, falling consumer demand, and a drop in housing starts, point toward a slowing economy. These signs support the likelihood of further rate cuts by the Fed and, in turn, modest declines in mortgage rates.
Most experts expect mortgage rates to stay within the 6.25% to 6.5% range through October. While some predict small decreases, others anticipate rates will hold steady due to inflation concerns and market uncertainty. The mortgage market remains sensitive to economic data, making rate shifts possible from week to week.
Mortgage applications have seen slight gains, with refinancing and purchase activity increasing for three consecutive weeks. If rates continue to trend lower, more buyers may re-enter the market.
Predictions for the fourth quarter of 2025 vary, with estimates ranging from 6.3% to 6.7% for the average 30-year rate. Though far from the record lows of recent years, current rates are still favorable by historical standards.
Borrowers are encouraged to act decisively. Pre-approval and rate shopping remain key strategies, especially in a market where small differences can significantly affect long-term costs. Waiting for the perfect rate could mean missing out on real opportunities.

⚾ Rocchio’s Walk-Off HR Clinches AL Central and Historic Comeback
Rocchio’s Walk-Off Homer Seals AL Central for Guardians
Brayan Rocchio capped Cleveland’s stunning turnaround Sunday with a three-run homer in the 10th inning, lifting the Guardians to a 9-8 walk-off win over the Texas Rangers and clinching the AL Central title.
Once 15.5 games behind Detroit in early July, Cleveland completed the largest comeback to win a division in MLB history. Their playoff spot was secured earlier in the day when the Tigers lost 4-3 in Boston, giving the Guardians the tiebreaker edge.
Texas went up 8-5 in the top of the 10th on a three-run shot by Rowdy Tellez, but Cleveland stormed back. George Valera opened as the automatic runner, Bo Naylor doubled in a run, and Petey Halpin walked before Rocchio drilled a 1-2 pitch off the right-field foul pole.
Cleveland had chipped away late, with Jhonkensy Noel’s homer in the seventh cutting the deficit and Rocchio’s sacrifice fly tying it at 5 in the eighth.
The Guardians (88-74) earned their 13th AL Central crown — and first back-to-back titles since 2016-18 — and will host Detroit in Game 1 of the Wild Card Series on Tuesday. Their dramatic walk-off was also MLB’s final regular-season game to finish.

🏈 Detroit Dominates Cleveland for Third Straight Win
Lions Cruise Past Browns 34-10 as Goff, St. Brown Lead the Way
The Detroit Lions secured their third straight win with a 34-10 victory over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday at Ford Field, fueled by a strong defensive effort, key special teams play, and continued chemistry between Jared Goff and Amon-Ra St. Brown.
Goff threw two touchdown passes to St. Brown — a 2-yarder before halftime and an 8-yard score in the fourth — bringing St. Brown’s total to six TD receptions over the last three games. Despite throwing for just 168 yards and one interception, Goff made key plays when needed.
Detroit’s defense forced three turnovers, including two interceptions and a fumble recovery from Browns quarterback Joe Flacco. The Lions turned those into 17 points, helping build a 20-7 halftime lead.
Kalif Raymond broke the game open with a 65-yard punt return touchdown early in the fourth quarter, giving Detroit full control.
After an opening touchdown drive, the Browns' offense stalled, managing only 44 yards for the rest of the first half. Flacco finished with 184 yards and three turnovers before being replaced by rookie Dillon Gabriel. Running back Quinshon Judkins scored Cleveland’s lone touchdown on a 1-yard run in the first quarter.
Jahmyr Gibbs led Detroit’s ground game with 91 yards and an 8-yard touchdown. Kicker Jake Bates added field goals from 48 and 58 yards.
Aidan Hutchinson recorded a sack for the third straight game and forced a fumble — his second in six days — continuing his strong defensive impact.
Both teams suffered injuries. Cleveland’s offensive line struggled without two key starters, and receiver Cedric Tillman exited with a hamstring injury. Detroit lost cornerback D.J. Reed to a hamstring issue, while rookie Terrion Arnold and Jacob Saylors also left the game.
The Lions, now 3-1, travel to Cincinnati next week. The 1-3 Browns head overseas to face Minnesota in London.
