Mentorās Little Anglers Fishing Day Returns for a Fourth Year
Mentorās Natural Resources Division is hosting its fourth annual Little Anglers Fishing Day on Saturday, September 27, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Springbrook Gardens Park.
Open to kids 13 and under with an accompanying adult, the event offers a hands-on introduction to fishing. The city will provide fishing poles, bait, and a prize for the biggest catch of the day.

The program has grown each year, fueled by word-of-mouth and promotion through Mentorās āMentor Natureā Facebook page. Families appreciate the personal instruction and friendly competition, with bluegill being a favorite catch among young anglers.
Registration is required, with a $10 fee. Space is limited. To sign up, call 440-974-5720.
šØ Painesville Township Man Found Dead After SWAT Standoff; Dog Also Killed

Photo by Scott Rodgerson on Unsplash
A man was found dead inside his Painesville Township home following a tense SWAT standoff on Sunday evening, according to the Lake County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies initially responded to a residence on Coventry Drive on Sunday around 5:47 p.m. after reports of gunfire inside the home. The situation reportedly began during an argument between the man and a family member, during which multiple gunshots were fired. Two dogs were shot, and while one injured dog and the family member managed to escape safely, authorities believed another dog remained inside and was likely dead.
Unable to make contact with the man, law enforcement activated the Lake County Sheriffās Office Regional SWAT Team. Streets surrounding the residence were shut down, and nearby homes were evacuated as a safety precaution.
When SWAT officers eventually entered the home, they discovered the man deceased from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. They also located a dead dog inside the property.
By 8:40 p.m., roads in the area were reopened after the scene was secured. The incident remains under active investigation.

š Homeowners Invest in Renovations, Ignoring Economic Noise

U.S. Homeowners Boost Spending on Renovations
American homeowners are increasingly turning to home renovation projects, choosing to invest in their current spaces rather than move amid a cooling housing market and elevated interest rates. This growing trend is providing a lift to home improvement retailers and keeping the remodeling industry resilient.
In April, sales at building materials and garden supply stores rose by 0.8% compared to the previous monthāthe largest monthly gain since 2022āand saw a 3.2% increase over the same time last year. These numbers stand in sharp contrast to overall U.S. retail sales, which only edged up by 0.1% in the same period.
Rising costs havenāt deterred homeowners. According to Veriskās Remodel Index, the price of home repairs and remodeling climbed nearly 4% in the first quarter compared to last year. These increases are largely attributed to higher labor costs, rather than tariffs or supply chain disruptions.
Home Depot has reassured customers that it doesnāt expect to raise prices due to tariffs, thanks to diversified sourcing strategies. However, the company noted that fewer customers are committing to major remodels like kitchens and bathroomsāpossibly due to higher borrowing costs.
Still, the desire to enhance existing homes remains strong. Many homeowners locked in historically low mortgage rates during the pandemic, making them hesitant to sell now, with rates hovering around 7%. Instead of taking on new loans, these homeowners are choosing to upgrade their current homes, enhancing comfort and value without the burden of higher monthly payments.
The aging housing stock is also contributing to the uptick in renovations. Nearly half of U.S. owner-occupied homes were built before 1980, with a median age of 41 years. As these homes age, maintenance and modernization projects become more pressing, spurring consistent demand for home improvement services.
Harvard Universityās Joint Center for Housing Studies (JCHS) projects that renovation spending will continue to climb. In the first quarter of this year, homeowners spent $513 billion on home improvement and maintenanceāup 0.5% from last year. The Center anticipates that figure will grow to $526 billion by the first quarter of next year, marking a 2.5% increase.
With rising home values and stable job markets supporting consumer confidence, many Americans are choosing to reinvest in their homesāadding fresh life to familiar spaces.

š Browns Should Turn the Page and Start Dillon Gabriel Now
Why It's Time for the Browns to Start Dillon Gabriel
With the Cleveland Browns off to a 1ā3 start, it's becoming clear that veteran quarterback Joe Flacco isnāt the long-term answer. While he delivered a comeback win over the Packers, his overall performance has lacked the spark needed to carry the offense. With playoff hopes fading, the Browns should shift focus to development ā starting with rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel.
Drafted in the third round, Gabriel quickly moved up the depth chart, beating out fellow rookie Shedeur Sanders and veteran Kenny Pickett, who was traded to the Raiders. Though third-round quarterbacks typically sit, Cleveland isnāt in a position to wait. With Flacco likely gone after this season, now is the time to see what Gabriel can offer.
Other teams, like the Giants, have already turned to rookie signal-callers with positive results. Cleveland has a similar opportunity in its upcoming matchup against the Vikings in London ā a chance for Gabriel to gain experience and show if he can be part of the team's future.
If Gabriel performs well, the Browns can use their draft capital ā including two first-rounders from the Travis Hunter trade ā to build around him. If he struggles, they can pivot to evaluate Sanders. Either way, the team gains clarity.
Starting Gabriel could also open trade possibilities before the November 4 deadline, particularly involving Sanders. But more importantly, it helps answer the franchiseās ongoing quarterback question. Gabriel may or may not be the long-term solution, but the Browns wonāt know unless he plays ā and continuing with Flacco only delays that decision.
