š Mentor Schools Canceled Tuesday Due to Bus Driver Shortage
Mentor Schools Reopen Following One-Day Closure Over Severe Bus Driver Shortage
Classes are back in session at Mentor Public Schools after the district was forced to cancel classes on Tuesday, September 30, due to a sudden and severe shortage of bus drivers.
The decision to close schools was announced around 6:15 a.m. Tuesday morning, catching many families off guard. The shortage stemmed from a large number of unexpected driver absences, which left the transportation department unable to cover all scheduled routes.
Mentorās transportation system typically manages 48 routes each day, covering multiple runs for elementary, middle, and high schools. It also provides transportation for private, parochial, and special education students. Each route can require up to four separate runs between morning and afternoon schedules.
The district was already under strain with two full-time driver positions unfilled and four drivers out on extended leave. On Tuesday morning, five additional drivers were absent, three of whom called off at the last minute. This brought the total number of uncovered routes to nine in the morningāimpacting 29 separate runsāwith projections showing 14 drivers would be needed by the afternoon, potentially affecting 41 runs.
Despite efforts to deploy substitute drivers, dispatchers, office staff, and even members of the maintenance team, the district could not find enough coverage to safely transport students.
Officials acknowledged the inconvenience caused to families and emphasized that the choice to cancel classes was not made lightly. The district expects to continue normal operations for the rest of the week and is actively working to recruit more bus drivers to stabilize the transportation department moving forward.

š¤ Miracle on Lake Erie: Father and Toddler Survive Hour Adrift
A routine fishing trip on Lake Erie turned into a tense rescue effort Friday afternoon after a 3-year-old girl fell overboard. Her father immediately jumped in after her, sparking a desperate attempt to keep them both afloat until help arrived.
Fortunately, the young child was wearing a life jacket, which helped her remain buoyant as her father held her to his chest, struggling to stay above water. While the father and daughter drifted in one direction, the boat, still running, moved in another with the mother and their 2-year-old son onboard. As the mother fought to shut down the engines and stabilize the vessel, she lost sight of her husband and daughter entirely.
The Ashtabula Fire Department was already on the water, returning from another emergency call, which allowed them to respond more quickly than usual. Crews first located the mother and young son aboard the drifting boat and then turned their focus to searching for the missing pair in the water.
During the ordeal, the fatherās energy began to wane. Fearing the worst, he gave his daughter simple but heartbreaking instructionsāif he went under, she was to wave to passing boats and try to get help.
After multiple search passes, a faint motion in the waves caught the eye of one of the rescuers. A handābarely visibleāwas spotted, leading to the pair being found and pulled from the lake more than an hour after they first went overboard.
The rescue has reignited concerns over the closure of the local Coast Guard station in Ashtabula, which once operated around the clock. Now closed due to federal downsizing, response times have increased. During Friday's emergency, Coast Guard crews were dispatched from Toledo, Erie, and Fairport Harbor, but none had arrived by the time the rescue was completedāan hour and seven minutes after the initial distress call.

šš»āāļøāā”ļø Natural Energy Boosters: Key Nutrients Your Body Needs

Top Vitamins and Minerals to Boost Energy Naturally
Just like a car needs quality fuel to perform well, your body requires essential nutrients to maintain steady energy levels and support overall health. While a nutrient-rich diet can help you feel more energized, taking supplements without a deficiency wonāt necessarily enhance your energyāand in some cases, it could do more harm than good. Hereās a closer look at the key vitamins and minerals that play a role in energy production and how to get them safely.
Essential Minerals for Sustained Energy
Iron
Iron is vital for producing hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body. When iron levels are too low, oxygen delivery is reduced, leading to fatigueāa classic symptom of iron-deficiency anemia. Iron is particularly important for menstruating and pregnant women, who are at higher risk for deficiency. Good dietary sources include lean meats, seafood, beans, spinach, and iron-fortified cereals and breads. However, excess iron can be toxic, so supplementation should only be done when medically necessary.
Magnesium
Magnesium supports the bodyās ability to convert glucose into usable energy. Low levels are linked to several chronic conditions, including type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and osteoporosis. Nearly half of the U.S. population doesnāt meet daily magnesium requirements through diet alone. Foods rich in magnesium include legumes, seeds, whole grains, leafy greens, milk, and yogurt. Because magnesium is found in many high-fiber foods, improving your fiber intake can also help maintain adequate levels.
Vital Vitamins for Energy and Vitality
Vitamin B12 and Folic Acid
Both of these B vitamins are crucial for red blood cell production. While most people get enough folic acid due to food fortification, vitamin B12 deficiency is more common, particularly in older adults and those who avoid animal products. B12 is found in meats, fish, eggs, and dairy, making supplementation important for vegans or people with absorption issues, such as those with certain digestive disorders or those taking medications like metformin. Without a deficiency, taking extra B12 is unlikely to provide an energy boost.
Vitamin D
Low vitamin D levels are associated with a higher risk of chronic diseases and can impact muscle and bone strengthāboth factors that affect energy. It also plays a role in mood regulation, and low levels may contribute to fatigue and low motivation. The body produces vitamin D through sun exposure, but it can also be obtained from fatty fish and fortified foods. For older adults or those with deficiencies, vitamin D3 is the most effective supplemental form.
The Bottom Line
Before turning to supplements to fight fatigue, itās essential to identify any underlying deficiencies through proper medical testing. In most cases, a balanced, whole-food diet remains the best way to naturally support energy levels and overall health.

ā¾ Williams Shines, But Guardians Fall Behind in AL Wild Card Series
Guardians Fall Short in Game 1 Against Tigers Despite Gritty Effort
The Cleveland Guardians dropped a tightly contested Game 1 of the American League Wild Card Series on Tuesday night, falling 2-1 to the Detroit Tigers in a matchup defined by dominant pitching and missed opportunities.
Despite a strong showing from rookie starter Gavin Williams, who allowed no earned runs over six-plus innings and struck out eight, the Guardians couldnāt capitalize on key chances, particularly in a tense ninth inning that ended in heartbreak.
Clevelandās only run came in the fourth inning through aggressive base running and infield contact. Angel MartĆnez led off with a slow grounder, later advancing to second on a walk. Gabriel Arias then sent a high chopper into no-manās land between the mound and second, allowing MartĆnez to race home. Though initially ruled out, the call was overturned after replay confirmed he beat the tag, tying the game at 1-1.
Detroit took advantage of a miscue in the first inning and a perfectly executed safety squeeze in the seventh to notch their two runsāboth unearned due to Guardians defensive errors.
The Guardians had a prime opportunity to tie or win in the ninth. JosĆ© RamĆrez reached base on an infield single and advanced to third on a throwing error. But pinch-hitter George Valera struck out, and when Kyle Manzardo tapped a comebacker to the mound, RamĆrez broke for home and was caught in a rundown, tagged out between third and the plate. The threat ended when C.J. Kayfus flied out to shallow left.
Cleveland's aggressive base-running style nearly paid off, but a lucky bounce to the pitcher cut short their rally. With their season now on the line, the Guardians must regroup quickly ahead of Game 2 on Wednesday.
