šŸ“° From Team USA to Mentor Ice Arena: Local Skating Star Now Leads the Rink

Michelle Walters has returned to her roots as the new recreation coordinator at the Mentor Ice Arena, where her skating journey first began. A longtime figure skater who trained locally and worked at the arena during high school, Walters brings decades of experience to her leadership role.

In 2016, she became the Learn to Skate director and later founded Inspire Synchronized Skating, a program aimed at giving beginners a chance to explore the sport. Her inspiration for the program came from her own path in synchronized skating, which led her to compete nationally and internationally.

As a student at Miami University, Walters earned a place on the varsity synchronized skating team, helping them win a national title in 1999. She represented Team USA in multiple competitions, including three World Championships. After college, she lived in Germany for several years, where she continued competing with a senior-level team.

Walters returned to Ohio in 2010 and resumed coaching at Mentor Ice Arena in 2013. Now, as recreation coordinator, she manages a wide range of programs including hockey, public skating, and special events.

The 2025 season kicks off October 4 with public skating and includes seven cosmic skate nights featuring lights and music. Other major events include a free skate after the city’s tree lighting on December 2, Mentor Skate Day on January 3, and an Olympic-themed event on February 21 with games, lessons, and performances.

For more details on programs and events, the arena can be reached at 440-974-5730.

šŸ“° Keeping Mentor Beautiful: City Details Lawn, Tree, Vehicle, and Sign Regulations

Mentor Enforces Property Standards to Protect Neighborhood Quality

The City of Mentor is reinforcing its commitment to community upkeep through active property maintenance and zoning enforcement. These regulations are designed to protect public health and safety while preserving property values and neighborhood appeal.

Code Enforcement Officers work directly with property owners to address violations through notices, compliance timelines, and follow-up. Most cases are resolved quickly, but unresolved violations may result in legal action.

Property maintenance rules require owners to keep buildings and yards clean, functional, and in good repair, including proper drainage. Lawns must be under eight inches tall, and noxious weeds like poison ivy and thistles are banned within 50 feet of dwellings. Violations must be corrected within 48 hours, or the city may act at the owner’s expense.

Sign regulations prohibit all signs in public rights-of-way, on utility poles, or attached to trees. Off-site signs and those with balloons or lights are also not permitted. Any sign violating these rules will be removed immediately.

For RVs, boats, and trailers, front yard parking is not allowed. These vehicles must be on approved surfaces and properly set back from property lines. Driveway construction requires a permit.

Only one commercial vehicle under 10,000 lbs. may be parked on a residential property. Heavy construction equipment is limited to 30 days in residential zones.

Tree maintenance is also required. Dead trees or low-hanging branches that obstruct sidewalks or roads must be removed or trimmed. Special permits are needed for removing tree lawn trees.

To report property concerns, residents can call (440) 974-5740.

⚾ Guardians’ Historic Run Ends in Wild Card Loss to Tigers

Guardians' Comeback Season Ends in Wild Card Loss to Tigers

The Cleveland Guardians’ magical season came to an abrupt end Thursday at Progressive Field, as the Detroit Tigers used a pair of timely rallies to hand the AL Central champions a 6-3 loss and advance to the American League Division Series.

After storming back from 15.5 games behind in early July to claim the division crown — the largest comeback in league history — the Guardians couldn’t keep the momentum going in the best-of-three Wild Card Series. Detroit, a team that limped into the postseason with a 7-17 September, found just enough spark to eliminate Cleveland on its home field.

Cleveland held its ground through five innings, tied 1-1 behind a run-scoring single from JosƩ Ramƭrez in the fourth. But Detroit seized control late, beginning with a sixth-inning solo home run by rookie catcher Dillon Dingler off Joey Cantillo that gave the Tigers the lead for good.

One inning later, Detroit broke things wide open. Cleveland relievers couldn’t stop a four-run Tigers rally in the seventh that saw 10 batters come to the plate. Wenceel PĆ©rez delivered the biggest blow, a two-run single that set the tone. Additional RBI singles from Spencer Torkelson and Riley Greene made it 6-1 before the Guardians could escape the inning.

Cleveland showed a flicker of life in the eighth, capitalizing on a fielding miscue by Detroit’s Will Vest that allowed two runs to score. But the rally was cut short when RamĆrez, trying to stretch his luck, was thrown out at second.

The loss ends a season that was as improbable as it was inspiring. Led by a young roster and anchored by RamĆrez — who notched his 40th career postseason hit Thursday — the Guardians defied odds all summer. But in October, a mix of missed opportunities and Tigers momentum proved too much to overcome.

Detroit advances to face the Seattle Mariners in the ALDS, beginning Saturday.

šŸˆ Mentor vs. Strongsville: GCC Title on the Line in Epic Friday Night Clash

Jerome T. Osborne Stadium is set for one of the biggest high school football matchups in Northeast Ohio this Friday as undefeated Mentor hosts one-loss Strongsville in a game many view as the de facto Greater Cleveland Conference championship.

Both teams are 3-0 in the GCC. Mentor stands at 6-0 overall, coming off a dominant 35-0 win over Cleveland Heights. Strongsville improved to 5-1 after a convincing 42-14 win over Medina.

This matchup features two of the conference’s most complete teams. Strongsville’s defense is headlined by standout linemen Storm Miller (Texas A&M commit) and Austin Adkins (Ohio University commit), both known for their ability to pressure the quarterback. They'll face a Mentor offense stacked with six future Division I players — including four on the offensive line.

Mentor running back Jackson Farley has been a force, rushing for 1,147 yards and 18 touchdowns on just 101 carries. His explosive runs have opened up the passing game for quarterback Brogan Jones (855 yards, 7 TDs) and receiver Justen Hodge (360 yards, 20 catches).

Strongsville’s offense is no slouch, either. Running backs Kendrick Boddie and Austin Tatulinski lead a ground game that will challenge a Mentor defense that has forced 12 turnovers this season. Leading tacklers Carson Wolk and Ben Schenk will be key in stopping the Mustangs’ momentum.

With conference title implications and playoff seeding on the line, this game is expected to be a high-intensity battle between two of the region’s top programs.

Kickoff is 7 p.m. on October 3, with coverage on WINT-AM 1330, FM 101.5, and WREO-FM 97.1.

šŸˆ Lake Catholic Looks to Extend Series Lead Over Gritty Elyria Catholic

The stage is set for a gritty North Coast Conference battle as Lake Catholic travels to Dan Reaser Stadium to take on Elyria Catholic in a matchup between two teams with contrasting records but similar mindsets.

Lake Catholic enters at 4-2 (0-1 NCC) and leads the all-time series 18-5, including a commanding 49-6 win last season. However, this year's Cougars squad has a very different identity, shifting away from last season’s high-flying offense to a more ground-and-pound approach backed by a stout defense.

In last week’s 28-21 loss to CVCA, Danny Zmorowski rushed for 101 yards and two touchdowns, while Liam Coyne stepped in as starting quarterback and threw for 98 yards and a score. Previously, Max Pisano had led the offense at QB. Defensively, Lake Catholic is anchored by a physical front led by Marty Loncar (eight tackles for loss, three sacks) and Mikey Barnes (six TFLs, five sacks), both of whom will play key roles in controlling the trenches.

Elyria Catholic, now 3-3 (1-0 NCC), is coming off a solid 28-14 win over Akron SVSM where their run game carried the offense. Jaseer McElya scored twice, while Zion Castillo and Corey Armelin each added rushing touchdowns.

Both teams will aim to dominate the line of scrimmage, limit big plays, and force their opponent into uncomfortable third-and-long situations. With the NCC standings starting to take shape, this midseason matchup could have lasting postseason implications.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on October 3.
