📰 Pub 1812 to Bring New Life to 213-Year-Old Painesville Landmark

Leonard William - Pub 1812
Historic Rider’s Inn to Reopen as Pub 1812 with New Vision
A Lake County landmark is set for a revival. The 213-year-old Rider’s Inn in Painesville will reopen as Pub 1812 at Rider’s Inn, with a target launch before Halloween.
Leonard William, a hospitality veteran from Mentor, is leading the transformation. After spotting a Facebook post about the property earlier this year, he partnered with his daughter Alishia and began renovations in May.
The historic building, once a stagecoach stop turned restaurant and inn, has seen several business changes in recent years. The latest, a proposed event space called Legacy Lounge, never opened and ended in March 2025.
William’s team gutted and rebuilt the kitchen, and made key structural repairs to the roof, plumbing, and electrical systems. Despite its age, the building retains solid walnut beams and tree-trunk supports with bark still intact.
The name Pub 1812 was inspired by an old attic sign reading “Rider’s Inn Pub 1812,” honoring the inn’s legacy while starting a new chapter.
The restaurant’s menu will offer a mix of comfort and creative fare, including duck, tuna, beef, and short rib Wellington, plus rotating global specials. The bar will feature bourbon, craft cocktails, beer, and wine.
William also plans to revive the inn’s 10 guest rooms by February 2026 and offer breakfast and brunch service. Outdoors, he envisions a terraced patio and bocce courts on the 1.75-acre property.
Work continues on-site, and the team is awaiting a liquor license before opening. William hopes to restore the property’s charm and create a lasting community space.

🚨 Chase Through Willoughby and Mentor Leads to Felony Convictions
Cleveland Heights Man Sentenced to Four Years Following Police Pursuit and Drug Possession
A 31-year-old man from Cleveland Heights has been sentenced to four years in prison following a high-speed police pursuit that ended in a crash and the discovery of crack cocaine in his possession.
The incident began on the morning of May 13, when Willoughby Police were alerted to a vehicle near the intersection of Route 91 and Route 84. Authorities identified the driver as Troy Lacey, who was wanted on an active warrant from Mentor Police for a prior fleeing and eluding charge.
After spotting the vehicle, a Willoughby officer attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle sped away, merging eastbound onto Interstate 90. A pursuit ensued, with Mentor Police joining the effort.
The chase concluded at the I-90 and Route 44 exit ramp, where the vehicle crashed. Lacey, who was the only person in the car, sustained a minor forehead injury and was arrested at the scene.
During the arrest, officers found approximately 8 grams of crack cocaine in Lacey’s possession.
Lacey appeared in Lake County Common Pleas Court on August 18, where he pleaded guilty to multiple charges: one third-degree felony count of failure to comply with a police order, one fourth-degree felony count of the same offense, and one fourth-degree felony count of possession of a controlled substance.
📰 UPDATE: Three Dogs Euthanized After Pit Bull Attack Injures Child in Mentor
Three Dogs Euthanized After Pit Bull Attack on Child in Mentor
Three dogs have been euthanized following a violent pit bull attack that left a 4-year-old girl seriously injured in Mentor, according to the Lake County Dog Shelter.
The attack occurred on October 4 around 1:30 p.m. at a home on Rushton Drive. Responding to a 911 call, Mentor police and fire crews found that a pit bull had attacked a young girl and her mother. The child, Carina Higham, suffered severe injuries and was transported to UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. Her mother, Alexis Higham, was also bitten and required stitches to both hands.
Carina has since undergone facial reconstructive surgery, with additional cosmetic procedures expected in the coming months. Her mother, now recovering, is unable to work, and Carina is missing school.
The Lake County Health Department is currently testing the dog involved in the attack. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help the family with medical and recovery expenses.

🏈 Red-Hot Cardinals Aim for Ninth Straight Win Over Red Raiders

Mentor Hosts Shaker Heights Looking to Extend Perfect Streak
The Mentor Cardinals will look to stay unbeaten as they host the Shaker Heights Red Raiders this Friday, October 10, at 7:00 p.m. The Cardinals are aiming to continue a dominant run in this matchup, having won all eight meetings against the Red Raiders since 2015.
Mentor enters the game with a flawless 7-0 record and is coming off its highest-scoring performance of the season—a 55-21 rout of Strongsville. The Cardinals’ ground attack was relentless, racking up 394 rushing yards, their best rushing total this year.
Leading the charge once again was Jackson Farley, who rushed for 157 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 7.1 yards per carry. Farley has been a scoring machine, recording at least two rushing touchdowns in every game this season. Braylon Callahan added to the effort with 94 yards and two touchdowns of his own, as Mentor’s offense proved nearly unstoppable.
While Mentor keeps climbing, Shaker Heights is looking to break out of a five-game losing streak. The Red Raiders came close last week but ultimately fell 19-14 to Lorain, dropping their record to 1-6.
When these teams met last October, Mentor delivered a commanding 45-6 win, jumping out to a 31-6 lead by halftime. With home-field advantage and momentum on their side, the Cardinals will aim to repeat that performance, while the Red Raiders hope to flip the script.
🏈 Lake Catholic Eyes Sixth Win in Road Test at Padua Stadium

Lake Catholic Visits Padua for Week 8 Conference Matchup
The Padua Franciscan Bruins will host the Lake Catholic Cougars this Friday, October 10, in a Week 8 North Coast Conference (NCC) game at Padua Stadium (6740 State Road, Parma). Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
Padua enters the matchup with a 1-6 overall record and 0-2 in conference play, while Lake Catholic sits at 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the NCC. With the regular season winding down, both teams will be aiming to make a late push in the standings.
Lake Catholic is coming off a dominant 26-0 shutout of Elyria Catholic. The Cougars built a 26-point lead through three quarters, fueled by a strong ground attack and a relentless defense. Max Pisano rushed for 90 yards and two touchdowns, including a 55-yard score, while Danny Zmorowski added 103 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries.
Defensively, Lake Catholic sacked the Panthers’ quarterback six times, with standout linebacker Marty Loncar recording two of them. Loncar has tallied seven or more tackles in nine straight games.
Padua looks to regroup after a 48-6 loss to Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin, its third straight defeat. The Bruins hope to take advantage of home-field advantage as they look for their first NCC win.
When these teams met last October, Lake Catholic rolled to a 46-17 victory. The Cougars will aim for a repeat performance, while the Bruins seek a much-needed rebound on their home turf.
