Mentor Community Honors Late Teen Wrestler During Friday Night Football Game
The Mentor community came together Friday night to honor the memory of 14-year-old Lucas McGee, a freshman at Mentor High School who tragically passed away following a medical emergency during a workout last month.
Lucas, a dedicated student-athlete on the schoolās wrestling team, collapsed unexpectedly during what was described as a routine training session. He was rushed to the hospital and placed on a ventilator as doctors searched for answers regarding the sudden cardiac failure. His family previously shared that doctors were exploring whether a recent illness may have triggered the heart condition.

Mentor schools said in a statement Friday: āLucas will be remembered for his warm personality, kind spirit, quiet strength, and unwavering sense of humor that made him a wonderful friend and classmate. Lucasās family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist with medical expenses and burial costs, as they continue to navigate this heartbreaking loss.

šŗļø Ohioās Epic Loop: Hiking, History, and Heart on the Buckeye Trail

Exploring Ohio's Buckeye Trail: A 1,444-Mile Journey of Nature, Memory, and Endurance
Ohioās Buckeye Trail ā a massive 1,444-mile loop ā is under consideration for National Scenic Trail status, a designation that could bring increased visibility, funding, and prestige to the longest loop trail contained within a single U.S. state.
For one writer and her husband, a three-day, 36-mile backpacking trip along the trailās 250-mile Little Loop became both a physical test and a deeply personal experience. Beginning in the Cuyahoga Valley, they hiked through pine forests, urban centers, waterfalls, and neighborhoods, discovering Ohioās rich contrasts ā from serene natural landscapes to bustling industrial stretches.
While the vast majority of trail users are day hikers, a few have taken on the full thru-hike, walking the entire loop in a continuous journey. Among them is Ian Koenig, who holds the fastest known time (FKT) at just over 35 days ā an average of 40 miles per day, all self-supported. His trek was also a tribute to his late father, whose ashes he spread along the way, continuing a personal tradition he started on other national trails.
Koenig is part of a small group of elite hikers that includes Everett Brandt and Josh Horsfall. Each has experienced the trailās extremes ā from steep elevation in Wayne National Forest to long urban stretches ā all while managing minimal gear, unpredictable weather, and fatigue. Their journeys speak to the trailās blend of endurance sport and emotional pilgrimage.
The Buckeye Trailās history stretches back to a 1958 newspaper column that envisioned a statewide path connecting Ohioans to nature. With the help of legendary hiker Emma āGrandmaā Gatewood and a growing volunteer base, the trail has steadily evolved, now passing through 49 counties, 18 state parks, five state forests, and one national park.
Today, the Buckeye Trail is maintained by a small nonprofit and an army of volunteers who contribute over 20,000 hours annually. Federal recognition would provide a dedicated agency partner and more resources to improve signage, shelters, and off-road sections.
But even without that designation, the trail continues to shape lives. The writerās own journeyāundertaken with limited training, heavy packs, and the memory of her late fatherāserved as a quiet tribute. Carrying a cremation stone in her pack, she marked Fatherās Day surrounded by nature and family memories.
The hike ended early due to thunderstorms, but the experience remained meaningful. Like the volunteers and hikers whoāve come before, she discovered that the Buckeye Trail is about more than just miles. Itās about connectionāto nature, to community, and to the stories that unfold with every step.

š Turnover Tide: No. 1 Ohio State Cruises Past No. 17 Illinois, 34-16
Ohio State Turns Takeaways into Touchdowns to Defeat Illinois 34-16
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. ā No. 1-ranked Ohio State capitalized on three Illinois turnovers, converting each into touchdowns on the way to a 34-16 victory over the 17th-ranked Illini on Saturday.
Quarterback Julian Sayin led the Buckeyes' offense with two touchdown passes, completing 19 of 27 attempts for 166 yards. Running back C.J. Donaldson added two rushing scores while Jeremiah Smith contributed a touchdown reception. Despite being held to just 44 rushing yards, Donaldsonās impact was felt in the red zone.
Illinois struggled early, falling behind 20-3 by halftime. Quarterback Luke Altmyer threw for 248 yards and a touchdown but also tossed his first interception of the season. The Buckeyes turned that miscue into their first touchdown of the day, setting the tone for a dominant defensive performance.
Ohio Stateās defense stood firm, allowing just two second-half touchdownsāthe only ones it has surrendered before halftime all season. Illinois fumbled twice, including a costly strip-sack of Altmyer. Special teams errors also plagued the Illini, including a mishandled punt snap that set up a Buckeye field goal.
The win marks Ohio Stateās 10th straight victory over Illinois, a streak that dates back to 2007. The Buckeyes remain undefeated at 6-0 overall and 3-0 in Big Ten play. Illinois drops to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
Ohio State continues its quest to stay atop the AP rankings with a trip to Wisconsin next week.
