💜 Mentor Teen Beats Rare Cancer, Returns to Football Field with His Brother
Mentor Teen Beats Rare Cancer, Returns to Football Field with His Brother
In Mentor, Ohio, a high school athlete is redefining resilience after battling a rare cancer and returning to the sport he loves.
Jackson Callahan’s passion for football began before kindergarten. But at age seven, he was diagnosed with fibroid myxoid sarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer. Over the course of a year, he underwent seven surgeries, determined to return to the game.
Now cancer-free, Jackson is a starting outside linebacker for Mentor High School—and he’s playing alongside his younger brother, Raylin. It’s a full-circle moment for the siblings, who now share the field with coaches Jackson has trained under for years.
His positive attitude and relentless work ethic have earned respect from both coaches and teammates. But Jackson’s story also highlights the growing costs of high school sports, with gear alone running into the thousands per player—costs many families struggle to cover.
That’s where local businesses are stepping in. McDonald’s owner-operators across Northeast Ohio, including former college football player Kevin McCoy, are launching a Fall Digital Fundraiser. On Thursday, October 23rd, 10% of all digital orders made through the McDonald’s app at participating locations will go toward school athletic programs.
Funds will support schools like Mentor High in providing equipment, meals, and resources for hundreds of student-athletes involved in football, band, and more.
Jackson had his final surgery in June and was back on the field by August. Now, he hopes his journey can inspire others to push through their own challenges.
His message is simple but powerful: stay strong, keep the faith, and believe you can overcome anything.

Do red cars cost more to insure?
You may have heard the myth that red cars cost more to insure, often with varying reasons why. The truth is, the color of your car has nothing to do with your premium. Insurance companies are more interested in your vehicle’s make, model, age, safety features, and your driving history. What’s not a myth, though — is that people really can save a ton of money by switching insurers. Check out Money’s car insurance tool to see if you could, too.

🏡 Fall Housing Market Heats Up for Buyers as Listings Rise and Prices Cool

Home Inventory Climbs, Prices Slip: Fall Market Offers a Window for Home Buyers
Prospective homebuyers received welcome news in September as the housing market continued shifting in their favor. Active for-sale listings jumped by 17% compared to the same month last year, signaling growing supply after years of tight inventory and high prices.
According to Realtor.com, there were roughly 1.1 million homes listed across the U.S. last month. That’s not only slightly above August’s total but marks the 23rd consecutive month of year-over-year listing growth. Although the current supply remains below pre-pandemic levels, signs point to a gradual return to normalcy—albeit at varying paces across different regions.
Much of the momentum is being seen in major metropolitan areas. Washington, D.C. led the nation with a 48.7% surge in active listings, followed closely by Las Vegas, Baltimore, and North Carolina’s Charlotte and Raleigh markets—all seeing inventory spikes of over 30%.
Overall, the Western U.S. experienced the largest regional growth at 21.1%, followed by the South (17.9%), Midwest (13.2%), and Northeast (10.1%).
Not only are more homes hitting the market, but price reductions are becoming more common. Roughly 20% of all listings last month saw markdowns, up from 18.6% a year ago. Additionally, listings are staying on the market longer—an average of 62 days compared to 55 in September 2024—giving buyers more room to negotiate.
Nationally, the median list price dipped slightly to $425,000, down from $429,990 in August and nearly flat from the same time last year. This leveling out of prices, combined with expanded inventory, is making the fall season particularly favorable for those looking to enter the housing market.
Realtor.com notes that mid-October, specifically the week of October 12–18, could be an especially strategic time to buy, as seasonal trends align with price cuts and increased selection.
The overall trend is clear: a market once dominated by sellers is beginning to balance out, giving buyers new opportunities to act.

🏈 Browns Fall to Steelers in Week 6 as Offensive Woes Mount
The Cleveland Browns fell to the Pittsburgh Steelers 23-9 in Week 6, continuing a frustrating trend of offensive inefficiency. Coming into the game, Cleveland had been struggling to put points on the board and faced unfavorable odds against a well-rested Steelers team under head coach Mike Tomlin, especially when facing a rookie quarterback. Those patterns held true once again as Pittsburgh led from start to finish.
The game began with both defenses dominating early, resulting in a field goal-heavy first half. Cleveland’s only points before halftime came from a late two-minute drill that ended in a field goal. The Steelers began to pull away in the second half, scoring two touchdowns to create a comfortable cushion that Cleveland never threatened.
Cleveland’s offense never found a rhythm, averaging just 3.3 yards per play compared to Pittsburgh’s 5.8. The ground game was ineffective, with running back Quinshon Judkins managing only 36 yards on 12 carries. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel completed 29 of 52 passes for 221 yards but was sacked six times and finished with a passer rating of 66.3.
Much of the offensive breakdown stemmed from the Browns’ battered offensive line, which has now used 13 different combinations through six games. Injuries struck again, with Jack Conklin leaving due to a concussion and Cam Robinson exiting late with an ankle injury. Protection issues plagued the unit all afternoon, stalling drives before they could gain traction.
