Does your car insurance cover what really matters?
Not all car insurance is created equal. Minimum liability coverage may keep you legal on the road, but it often wonāt be enough to cover the full cost of an accident. Without proper limits, you could be left paying thousands out of pocket. The right policy ensures you and your finances are protected. š From Weight Gain to Life Strain: The Real Risks of Pet Obesity

Pet Obesity Awareness Day Sheds Light on a Growing Health Concern for Local Pets
While many are busy preparing for Halloween, the second Wednesday of October drew attention to a different seasonal concern: pet obesity. This national awareness day serves as a reminder of the health risks associated with overweight petsāan issue that often goes unnoticed but can be life-threatening.
Veterinarians report that roughly three-quarters of the animals they examine are carrying extra weight. About 20% meet the criteria for obesity, defined as being 30% or more above an ideal body weight.
Though effects vary by animal, excess weight can disrupt nearly every major body system. It can slow digestion, impair metabolism, and put stress on the heart and lungs. Internal fat around the chest and abdomen can restrict blood flow and make breathing more difficult, especially during activity.
Obesity also affects organ function. It increases the risk of diabetes and worsens conditions like arthritis in older pets. Inflammation caused by extra weight can damage cartilage, making joints sore and movement painful. This discomfort often leads to inactivity, muscle loss, more weight gain, and a cycle that's hard to reverse without intervention.
Ultimately, carrying too much weight can shorten a petās lifeāsometimes significantly.
Experts recommend checking with a veterinary professional to determine whether your pet is at a healthy weight. Because size and structure can vary even within the same breed, what looks ānormalā to an owner may not be healthy.
Maintaining a healthy weight involves more than cutting calories. The type of food, its nutritional balance, and how it fits into your petās health profile all play a role. Exercise is also important, but must be approached with careāespecially if underlying health issues are present.
Before starting a new routine, a vet visit can help ensure itās safe and effective. A professional can provide guidance on diet, treats, exercise options, and how to best support your petās long-term health.
