🍰 Firefighter and Chef Face Off in Sweet Symphony Cheesecake Showdown

Hero vs. Chef

Firefighter vs. Chef in a Sweet Showdown at Symphony at Mentor

It was a bake-off for the books at Symphony at Mentor, where flames met frosting in a cheesecake challenge between Firefighter Dan Garey of the Mentor Fire Department and in-house culinary talent Chef Teri.

The two went head-to-head in a friendly but flavorful contest. Chef Teri created a white chocolate Oreo cheesecake, while Firefighter Dan wowed with a double chocolate delight, each topped with ganache — white for Teri and dark for Dan.

Early scores had Teri in the lead, but two late taste-testers evened things out. The final result? A delicious tie, and a win for everyone who got a bite.

Though the cheesecakes couldn’t have been more different, both were praised for being creative, decadent, and drool-worthy. Guests enjoyed great company, a festive atmosphere, and a healthy dose of sugar-induced joy.

The event also shined a spotlight on Firefighter Dan Garey, who brought not only dessert skills but also his passion for community outreach.

In the end, the real winners were the guests — all leaving with smiles, full hearts, and a craving for more cheesecake.

📊 Mortgage Rates Decline for Second Week, but Buyer Demand Lags

Mortgage Rates Slip Again as Experts Predict Modest Declines Through October

Mortgage rates have fallen for a second straight week, offering a potential window of opportunity for homebuyers and homeowners considering refinancing. As of October 16, the average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage (FRM) dropped to 6.27%, down slightly from 6.30% the previous week. Though lower than recent highs, rates remain elevated compared to late 2024 levels.

The continued decline is attracting interest from homeowners looking to refinance and easing pressure on buyers, especially as inventory grows and price gains slow. Still, the ongoing government shutdown has introduced uncertainty, delaying some homebuyer assistance programs and making buyers more cautious.

Data from the Mortgage Bankers Association shows a 1.8% week-over-week drop in total mortgage applications as of October 10. Both refinance and purchase indexes edged down, indicating broader market hesitancy despite lower rates.

What to Expect for Mortgage Rates (Oct. 20–24)

Industry experts expect mortgage rates to hold steady or decline slightly heading into late October. Key influences:

  • Weaker Economic Indicators: Slowing business activity, declining factory orders, and a softening labor market point to economic cooling, which may push rates lower.

  • Fed Rate Cuts: The Federal Reserve’s recent rate cut in September and expected additional cut by month’s end have already lowered long-term bond yields.

  • Inflation Uncertainty: Though inflation has eased, ongoing concerns about a resurgence continue to affect investor sentiment and Treasury yields, which influence mortgage rates.

Analysts from Cornerstone Capital Bank, Realtor.com, and First American predict rates will remain in the 6.25%–6.5% range through October, with a slight downward trend. However, surprise inflation spikes or unexpected labor data could quickly reverse this movement.

Long-Term Mortgage Rate Outlook

Looking ahead, housing authorities anticipate mortgage rates to average higher than current levels in Q4 2025, with forecasts ranging from 6.3% to 6.7%. While the days of ultra-low rates appear to be in the rearview mirror, current averages remain below the historical norm of roughly 7.8% since 1971.

Strategies for Borrowers

For buyers and homeowners considering refinancing, timing and preparation are crucial:

  • Be Ready to Act: With the market slowly becoming more favorable for buyers, pre-approval and quick decision-making remain competitive advantages.

  • Shop Smart: Interest rates can vary significantly between lenders, especially in a volatile market. Gathering multiple loan quotes can help secure better terms.

  • Know Your Options: Loan type, credit profile, and down payment size can all influence the mortgage rate you’re offered. Exploring alternatives such as FHA, VA, or USDA loans may lead to more favorable outcomes.

🏈 Browns Crush Dolphins Behind Judkins’ 3 TD’s and Takeaway-Fueled Defense

The Cleveland Browns delivered their most complete performance of the season in a dominant 31-6 victory over the Miami Dolphins in Week 7. Playing in rainy conditions, the Browns leaned on running back Quinshon Judkins, who scored three rushing touchdowns—two out of the Wildcat formation—as Cleveland snapped a five-game losing streak to improve to 2-5.

Despite totaling just 206 yards of offense, the Browns capitalized on four turnovers and several costly Miami penalties. Defensive backs Grant Delpit, Rayshawn Jenkins, and Ronnie Hickman contributed key plays, including two interceptions and a strip-fumble recovery. Cornerback Tyson Campbell added a highlight-reel pick-six early in the third quarter to extend the lead.

Miami had moments, including long runs from De’Von Achane, but struggled to sustain drives. Tua Tagovailoa threw three interceptions before being replaced by Quinn Ewers in the fourth quarter. The Dolphins also failed on two fourth-down tries and committed penalties that kept Cleveland drives alive.

Quarterback Dillon Gabriel managed the game efficiently, completing 13 of 18 passes for 116 yards. The Browns consistently flipped field position and benefitted from short fields thanks to their aggressive defense.

The win marks the first time Cleveland has scored more than 17 points all season. Next, they travel to face the New England Patriots.
