🏃🏻‍♂️ From Cincinnati to Cleveland: Ultra-Runner’s 326-Mile Quest Honors Cancer Legacy

Joe Baur’s Substack

Mentor Native Runs Across Ohio to Set Record and Honor Late Mother

Joe Baur, a long-distance runner from Mentor, Ohio, is attempting to set the fastest known time (FKT) for running the 326-mile Ohio to Erie Trail. Beginning in Cincinnati on October 21, he plans to reach Cleveland by October 25 — the sixth anniversary of his mother’s passing from breast cancer.

Now living in Germany, Baur returned home for this deeply personal challenge. His goal is to run 60 to 70 miles each day, completing the trail in five days. If successful, he’ll break the current FKT of six days, 14 hours, and 43 minutes set earlier this year by Gary Sines of Columbus.

The run also serves as a fundraiser for Stand Up to Cancer, a nonprofit supporting cancer research. Baur had raised nearly $3,000 prior to the run and hopes to hit $5,000 by the end. A friend has pledged more if he breaks the record.

Though he’s raced in countries like Japan, Oman, and Nepal, Baur chose Ohio for its emotional significance. The trail passes through places tied to his childhood and family, including Columbus, Loveland, and Xenia. His father-in-law also serves on the trail’s board.

Baur founded the Burning River Running Company, organizing global running treks. Still, no location felt as meaningful as the Ohio to Erie Trail. He invites local runners to join him along the route and is documenting the journey on Facebook and Instagram.

For Baur, this run is about more than miles or records — it’s a tribute to his mother and a celebration of Ohio’s often-overlooked beauty and resilience.

💥Smartphone Giving You ‘Text Neck’? How to Fix That Pain in the Neck

They call them “smart-phones” but the way most of us use them is anything but intelligent. There is now a term used for pain in the shoulders, neck and upper back associated with the improper use of cell phones. It is called “text neck” and is caused by the angle a person bends their head forward while texting on a phone.

Our heads weigh approximately 15 pounds, but only exert a force of about 10 – 12 pounds when directly over our neck. The demands on our neck muscles increase when flexed. For every 10 degrees of flex, we are adding another 10 pounds of force on the neck. Studies show that the typical human flex their neck 45-60 degrees while texting. No wonder your neck, upper back and shoulders become fatigued!

This extra pressure can also cause headaches, reduce mobility in the shoulder and even cause numbness or tingling in the extremities. There are ways to alleviate any pain and prevent it from happening again.

The first step is ridding your body of the discomfort. Alternating between heat and ice or taking a muscle relaxant can give you temporary relief. For more permanent care, trying a healing modality such as acupuncture, pulsed electro-magnetic field therapy (PEMF) or massage.

Once you feel you can move your head comfortably, you can move on to exercises such as gently rolling your head in a circular motion. Stand tall, bring your shoulders as far back as possible and then as far forward as you can go. Repeat several times. Follow this by rotating your shoulders in a circular motion several times, first forward and then reverse. Add a few chin-tucks and repeat all of these several times a day to help with your range of motion.

The next time you pick up your phone, be smarter than it and hold the phone up to eye level so your shoulder muscles do the work, not your neck. And if you really want to be clever, use the voice-to-text option on your phone so you can alleviate manual typing altogether. If you are unsure of how to do this, follow my rule of thumb—ask a child (they may be just a bit smarter than the phone)!
