🏠 Changes to Historic Bolton Estate Plan Prompt Delay in Approval

We first reported on this story shortly after the Mentor Planning Commission meeting on October 16, 2025. This week, we’re taking a closer look at what unfolded that night and why one development proposal in particular drew extra attention.

A new version of the plan to redevelop the historic Bolton Estate has raised eyebrows among city officials, prompting the Planning Commission to put the matter on hold. The revised proposal, submitted by Petros Homes, introduces major changes from the court-approved plan that followed years of rezoning debates and a legal settlement with the property’s former owners.

One major point of contention is the inclusion of multi-family, for-rent units in a designated area where only for-sale, single-family homes were originally permitted. This deviation is seen as a direct conflict with the legal settlement, which had established strict guidelines covering open space, density, housing types, public amenities, and development boundaries.

The city’s law department raised red flags over several elements of the revised plan, including changes to sub-area acreage, the introduction of rental units, and reduced open space and trail access. Officials noted that the original settlement was intentionally structured to prevent substantial changes or reinterpretations, aiming to preserve the character and quality of the development.

Petros Homes defended the changes, describing the rental units as a strategic measure to avoid involving large-scale national builders. The company cited its previous work on Newell Creek as an example of successful development in the city and emphasized ongoing planning efforts, arguing that the rental units address growing local interest in more diverse housing options.

Despite the developer’s assurances, Mentor’s legal counsel maintained that the submission does not align with the foundational terms of the agreement — a document shaped by years of public input and legal negotiation. As a result, the Planning Commission unanimously agreed to pause the discussion to allow for further legal review and interdepartmental consultation.

📞 Mentor City Phone Lines Remain Down; Emergency Services Unaffected

City of Mentor

The City of Mentor is still experiencing a phone service outage affecting all municipal offices and facilities. The problem was first reported on the morning of October 21 through the city’s website and social media channels and remained unresolved as of 7 p.m. last night. This outage does not affect emergency services — 911, Mentor Dispatch, and the Police and Fire non-emergency lines remain fully operational.

Officials are urging the public not to contact dispatch unless they are facing an actual emergency. The City’s IT department is actively working to resolve the issue, and updates will be provided once service is restored.

Residents are advised to stay informed through the city’s website or official social media channels for any new developments.

👷🏻 Trail Closure at Mentor Lagoons Scheduled for October 25

City of Mentor

The trails at Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve will be temporarily closed this Saturday, October 25, 2025, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The closure is necessary to allow First Energy to safely remove power lines that run alongside the trail system.

During this time, residents and visitors are encouraged to explore one of Mentor’s many other scenic parks and green spaces. The city offers a wide range of outdoor destinations ideal for hiking, nature observation, and recreation while the Lagoons trails undergo this important maintenance.

🐕 Lost Dog Travels 2,000 Miles From California to Illinois, Reunited With Owner

A beloved family dog that vanished during a summer storm in Northern California has been found safe — over 2,000 miles away in Illinois.

The dog, a corgi-shepherd mix named Opie, disappeared from the town of Bieber, California, on July 1, leaving his owner, Ciara Babcock, heartbroken. Despite extensive efforts and a public plea for help, there were no signs of the missing pup for months.

Then, in a surprising turn of events, Opie was discovered wandering in Itasca, Illinois, a small suburb near Chicago. Local police picked him up and brought him to DuPage County Animal Services, where a quick scan of his microchip revealed his California roots.

Thanks to that chip, shelter officials were able to contact Babcock immediately. Less than a day later, she was on a flight to Illinois to be reunited with her four-legged friend.

Animal service officials praised the role of microchipping in the unexpected reunion, noting that without it, the incredible cross-country journey might never have ended with such a happy outcome.

While it remains a mystery how Opie traveled such a vast distance, his story is now a powerful reminder of the importance of pet microchips — and never giving up hope.

🏀 Shorthanded Cavs Fall to Knicks After Late Fourth-Quarter Collapse

Cavs Fall Short in Season Opener Despite Mitchell's 31-Point Surge

The Cleveland Cavaliers opened the 2025-26 season with high expectations but came up short in a hard-fought 119-111 loss to the New York Knicks on Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden.

Despite a dominant third-quarter performance by Donovan Mitchell, who exploded for 21 of his 31 points in that frame, the Cavaliers couldn’t sustain their momentum down the stretch. Cleveland briefly took the lead in the second half but was undone by a decisive 14-0 Knicks run early in the fourth quarter.

Evan Mobley turned in a strong performance with 22 points and eight rebounds, stepping into an expanded offensive role as the Cavs continue to manage early-season injuries. Cleveland entered the game shorthanded, missing All-Star guard Darius Garland and forward Max Strus due to foot injuries, as well as key reserve De’Andre Hunter, who sat with a bruised knee.

The Cavaliers trailed by as many as 17 in the first half after a sluggish start, but Mitchell’s offensive burst helped Cleveland claw back into contention. However, the team struggled to contain New York’s balanced attack, as OG Anunoby led the Knicks with 24 points and 14 rebounds, including a clutch 3-pointer late in the game. Jalen Brunson added 23 points for New York, and Karl-Anthony Towns posted a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Cleveland, who began last season with a franchise-best 15-0 start, now shifts focus to rebounding quickly on the road as they continue navigating early injuries and integrating offseason additions like Lonzo Ball.

The Cavs will aim to even their record when they visit Brooklyn on Friday.
