Myth: Pet insurance doesn’t cover everything

Many pet owners worry that insurance won’t cover everything, especially routine care or pre-existing conditions. While that’s true in many cases, most insurers now offer wellness add-ons for preventive care like vaccines, dental cleanings, and check-ups, giving you more complete coverage. View Money’s pet insurance list to find plans for as low as $10 a month.

📰 Project Hope Hosts Annual Celebration to Raise Awareness, Inspire Giving

Project Hope for the Homeless, Lake County’s only homeless shelter, will host its annual fundraiser, The Night of Hope, at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 7 at St. Noel Banquet Center in Willoughby Hills.

Held two weeks before National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, the event raises awareness and support for local families in need. Each night, Project Hope shelters up to 50 people and assists about 500 individuals each year, offering not only a safe place to stay but also long-term guidance and stability.

The organization runs five programs—Adult and Family Shelters, Aftercare, Transitional Housing for Seniors, and the Welcome Home Center—which provides essentials for those moving into new homes. Thanks to continued support and wraparound care, 76% of guests transition into stable housing.

The Night of Hope celebrates these successes with live flute music, hors d’oeuvres, a family-style dinner, and dessert. The evening will feature inspiring stories, a presentation of the Blessings Award, and opportunities to give through a free-will offering.

Tickets are $75 per person or $575 for a table of eight. Reservations can be made at projecthopeforthehomeless.org.

📰 Fourth Annual CARES Football Day Celebrates Unity, Teamwork at Mentor High

At Mentor High School, varsity football players recently teamed up with students from the Cardinal Autism Resource and Education School (CARES) for a memorable day of connection, fun, and football. The fourth annual CARES Football Day brought students together to celebrate inclusion, teamwork, and school spirit.

The event began with a tour of the football locker room, where CARES students tried on helmets and shoulder pads, stepping into the role of a player. Excitement filled the air as they geared up and headed to the field.

On the turf, both groups took part in drills and games—passing, catching, and running plays—creating an energetic, welcoming atmosphere. Smiles and cheers echoed across the field as everyone got involved.

Beyond football, the event offered a meaningful lesson in empathy and community. The players valued the chance to connect with their CARES peers, appreciating the opportunity to share their sport and build bonds.

For many, the day was a reminder of the importance of giving back and supporting one another.

🍂 Mentor Expands Fall Yard Waste Limit Starting Today

The City of Mentor’s Yard Waste Program runs from the first full week of April through the second full week of December each year.

From today, October 27 through December 12, 2025, the weekly yard waste collection limit increases from 12 to 25 units to accommodate fall cleanup. Each unit counts as one bag, bundle, or container of yard waste.

To ensure collection:

  • Each unit must weigh under 35 pounds.

  • Branches may not exceed three inches in diameter and should be cut into four-foot lengths and bundled.

  • Only biodegradable paper bags are accepted — no plastic bags.

  • Reusable containers (up to 32 gallons) are allowed if labeled “YW” and have small drainage holes near the bottom.

For full guidelines, visit the Waste Removal and Recycling page or call Public Works at 440-974-5781.

🏠 With Rates at 13-Month Low, Borrowers Hope for Another Fed Cut

Will Mortgage Rates Fall After the October Fed Meeting?

With the Federal Reserve preparing for its next Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting on October 28–29, many homebuyers and homeowners are wondering: Will mortgage rates drop again?

After five rate holds in 2025, the Fed made its first cut of the year in September, despite annual inflation rising slightly from 2.7% in July to 3.0% in September—still above its 2% long-term target. This uptick has added uncertainty to the Fed's next move, especially amid political instability and a cooling job market.

Despite higher inflation, some economists believe weak labor data could prompt another modest cut. President Trump’s firing of the Bureau of Labor Statistics commissioner following poor job numbers has further complicated the outlook.

Mortgage rates, though not directly controlled by the Fed, often respond to its actions. Since the September cut, the average 30-year fixed rate has dropped to 6.19%—the lowest in over a year. Rates typically follow Treasury yields, which tend to track Fed policy.

Borrowers should be aware that some lenders now offer 90-day rate locks and future refinance incentives. Experts suggest focusing on personal affordability rather than trying to predict rate movements, as market conditions continue to shift.

🏈 Browns Stick with Struggling Gabriel as Sanders Waits in the Wings

Browns’ Offensive Struggles Continue as Quarterback Questions Intensify

The Cleveland Browns' 2025 season continued to unravel on Sunday with a 32-13 loss to the New England Patriots, leaving the team at 2-6 and prompting renewed calls for a change at quarterback. Despite another underwhelming outing from rookie Dillon Gabriel, head coach Kevin Stefanski has confirmed he will remain the starter following the team’s upcoming bye week.

Cleveland's offense sputtered throughout the game, with Gabriel completing 21 of 35 passes for just 156 yards. While he connected on two touchdown passes—including a late score to tight end David Njoku—his two third-quarter interceptions proved costly, each leading to Patriots touchdowns. Gabriel also committed an intentional grounding penalty in the end zone late in the game, resulting in a safety.

The performance marks another setback for Gabriel, who stepped in as starter after the Browns traded veteran Joe Flacco earlier this month. Since taking over, Gabriel has led the Browns to a 1-3 record. The lone win, a dominant victory over the Dolphins, was driven largely by the run game, not Gabriel’s arm.

With the offense struggling and playoff hopes slipping away, attention has turned to rookie backup Shedeur Sanders. Initially buried on the depth chart, Sanders has climbed to the No. 2 spot following Flacco’s departure. Though he was inactive Sunday due to a back issue that flared up the day before the game, Sanders had practiced throughout the week and is expected to be healthy soon.

The timing of the bye week presents a potential opportunity for a quarterback switch. The Browns return in Week 10 to face the 1-7 New York Jets, a team also mired in its own struggles. That game could be a proving ground for Gabriel—or a debut opportunity for Sanders.

🏀 Cavs Outlast Giannis' 40-Point Effort in Thrilling 118-113 Victory

Cavs Open Home Slate with Thrilling Win Over Bucks

The Cleveland Cavaliers secured a 118-113 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Sunday night in their Rocket Arena home opener, improving to 2-1 on the season. Despite a massive performance from Giannis Antetokounmpo, who tallied 40 points, 14 rebounds, and nine assists, the Cavs held firm late to deliver the Bucks their first loss of the year.

Cleveland led by as many as 18 points in the third quarter before Milwaukee stormed back with a 21-5 run to trim the lead to 86-84 entering the fourth. The final minutes were tense, with clutch shot-making and defensive pressure on both ends.

Donovan Mitchell scored a team-high 24 points, including a key jumper with just over a minute remaining to push the lead to six. Evan Mobley delivered a standout performance, finishing with 23 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and going a perfect 12-for-12 from the free-throw line—including four critical makes in the final seconds to ice the game.

Sam Merrill chipped in 17 points off the bench, while De’Andre Hunter added 16 in his season debut. Jarrett Allen anchored the paint with 11 rebounds.

The Cavs played strong team defense, forcing 18 turnovers and converting them into 24 points. They also outrebounded the Bucks and responded well to Milwaukee’s late-game zone defense.

The win capped a 2-1 opening week for Cleveland, which split road games against the Knicks and Nets before returning home for a dramatic victory.
