📰 Fiscal Discipline Praised as Lake County Stays on Track with Jail Project

Lake County Maintains Strong Financial Standing During Jail Project

Lake County officials have announced two key financial updates related to the ongoing construction of the Lake County Public Safety Center: the county has retained its Aa1 bond rating and made a $25 million early debt payment on the project.

The Aa1 rating, reaffirmed by Moody’s Ratings, reflects the county’s sound financial management, stable economy, and strategic budgeting. The designation is among the highest ratings available, indicating very low credit risk.

In a cost-saving move, the county paid $25 million ahead of schedule toward the estimated $205 million construction debt. Officials say this will reduce long-term interest costs, shorten the repayment period, and help maintain a sustainable county budget.

The early payment, funded through long-term savings, is expected to save taxpayers more than $1 million in interest in 2026, while freeing up future funds for other community needs.

The Public Safety Center, scheduled for completion in summer 2027, is replacing an outdated jail with a modern facility offering increased capacity, upgraded security, and expanded medical and mental health units.

County leaders say the financial decisions reflect a commitment to both public safety and fiscal responsibility.

🧑🏻‍⚕️ Virtual Nurses Now Assist Every Room at UH Lake West in First-of-its-Kind Rollout

UH Lake West Rolls Out Virtual Nursing Ahead of Flu Season

University Hospitals Lake West in Cleveland is preparing for cold and flu season with a full-scale virtual nursing system now active throughout the facility. This new approach enhances patient care and eases the workload on bedside staff without replacing traditional nursing roles.

Every patient room is now equipped with a camera, microphone, speaker, and screen, all connected to a platform called Vital Chat. This allows remote nurses to assist with tasks like admissions, discharges, and medication verification, freeing up on-site nurses for more hands-on care.

The cameras feature 20x zoom and night vision, enabling precise tasks like double-checking medications or monitoring patients in low light. This virtual support helps reduce nurse burnout and improves safety by providing a second layer of oversight without pulling staff away from other duties.

Funded through philanthropy, 160 rooms—including ER and ICU beds—are already outfitted, with a goal of expanding to 2,500. The technology also supports virtual family visits and lets relatives join medical consultations remotely.

Patient privacy is protected: cameras are turned off and pointed away when not in use. Patients must give permission before any virtual interaction begins. Feedback has been positive, with patients appreciating quicker responses and fewer disruptions in the room.

University Hospitals is one of the first in the country to implement hospital-wide virtual nursing, setting the stage for broader digital transformation in healthcare.

🛠️ How to Replace a Ceiling Light Fixture: A Step-by-Step DIY Guide

Replacing an outdated ceiling light fixture is a relatively straightforward project that can instantly refresh a room’s appearance. Whether you're upgrading for style, efficiency, or better illumination, this guide walks you through the entire process—from planning to installation—in about one to two hours.

What to Consider Before You Begin

Before heading to the hardware store, assess your space. Start by measuring the area where the fixture will go, taking note of ceiling height and slope. Check if the existing electrical box can support the weight and style of the new fixture. It’s also smart to inspect the ceiling for any cosmetic repairs, like patching or painting, that might be easier to do before installation begins.

When selecting a fixture, consider finishes that coordinate with your room’s existing design. Swapping a dated light for one with a modern look—such as brushed silver or matte black—can dramatically improve the room’s vibe. Increasing the fixture’s height slightly can also create the illusion of more space in smaller rooms.

If the old fixture is still in good condition, consider donating it to a local nonprofit to keep it out of the landfill.

📰 Mentor’s Scotty Fox Making Waves as West Virginia’s Freshman Quarterback

Scotty Fox - WVU Athletics

Mentor’s Scotty Fox Emerging as West Virginia’s Starting Quarterback

Scotty Fox, a true freshman from Mentor, Ohio, is making a strong case to be West Virginia’s full-time starting quarterback after two consecutive starts in a challenging 2025 season.

Fox made history on Oct. 18 when he became the first true freshman to start at quarterback for WVU since 1954. Although his debut resulted in a tough 45-13 loss to Central Florida, where he completed just six of 17 passes for 47 yards, he showed significant improvement in his second start against TCU on Oct. 25.

Facing the Horned Frogs, Fox passed for 301 yards, completing 28 of 41 attempts with two touchdown passes and no interceptions. That yardage set a new single-game passing record for a freshman at WVU. He connected on scoring throws to Grayson Barnes and Jeff Weimer, helping the Mountaineers pull within six points late in the fourth quarter, though they ultimately fell, 23-17.

First-year head coach Rich Rodriguez, who has used a rotating cast of quarterbacks for much of the season, stuck with Fox for the entire TCU game. Despite inexperience across the offense—Fox is surrounded by 10 other first-year starters—he handled the pressure well and appears to be gaining command of the playbook.

Fox’s season began with a 59-yard touchdown run in the opener against Robert Morris. He also played a key role in the team’s win over rival Pittsburgh in September, entering in the second half to lead a scoring drive. However, a pair of interceptions later in that game led to his removal in favor of Nico Marchiol, who finished off a 31-24 overtime victory.

Since then, Fox has shown growth, responding well to earlier struggles and earning increased trust from the coaching staff. Rodriguez noted that while the offensive playbook is still limited due to Fox’s youth, the freshman's development could allow for more complexity going forward.

West Virginia, currently 2-6, faces a difficult final stretch with four games remaining. The Mountaineers visit No. 22 Houston on Nov. 1, then host Colorado on Nov. 8, travel to Arizona State on Nov. 15, and close the regular season at No. 13 Texas Tech on Nov. 22. Fox’s performance in these matchups could solidify his future role in Morgantown.

🏐 Crestview Seeks Revenge as Red-Hot Rebels Face Lake Catholic

Lake Catholic heads into Wednesday’s playoff matchup against Crestview with momentum on their side and history in their favor. The Cougars, riding a four-game win streak and boasting a recent sweep over Crestview last October, are looking to maintain their edge when the two teams meet again on Wednesday October 29th 6:00 p.m. at Medina High School.

Lake Catholic improved to 15-10 after a gritty 3-1 win over Norwayne. The Cougars battled through set scores of 26-24, 18-25, 25-19, and 25-20. Defensive standouts Maddie Summers and Lola Loncar led the way—Summers notching 14 digs, and Loncar dominating with 35 digs and three aces. Loncar has now tallied at least 10 digs in every match this season, anchoring the back line with consistency.

Crestview (22-3) also advanced with a 3-1 win over Chagrin Falls. The Rebels were strong at the service line with 12 aces and got key contributions from Kerrigan Miller (20 digs) and Valerie Boyd (six digs, four aces). Still, they’ll need to overcome recent history and a Lake Catholic team peaking at the right time.

With both squads hitting their stride, the Cougars are focused on extending their playoff run and proving that last year’s win over Crestview was no fluke. Expect a competitive battle as Lake Catholic looks to keep control of this growing rivalry.
