👷🏻 Mentor Rec Center Schedules Temporary Closures for HVAC & Parking Upgrades
Mentor Recreation Center Announces Temporary Closures for Facility Upgrades
Visitors to the Mentor Recreation Center should prepare for temporary closures and parking adjustments as the facility undergoes key upgrades.
On Monday, November 3, 2025, the soccer center will be closed from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM as crews use a crane to install three new HVAC units on the roof. The following day, Tuesday, November 4, the free weight area (mezzanine) and basketball courts will also be closed between 8:00 AM and 2:00 PM while additional HVAC equipment is put in place for the fitness center.
In a separate project, the rear parking lot near the soccer center will undergo resurfacing from Wednesday, November 5, through Friday, November 8. During this time, visitors are asked to use the front parking lot.
These upgrades mark the latest efforts by the recreation center to enhance its facilities. The new HVAC systems are expected to be fully functional within the coming weeks. The city appreciates the public's patience during these improvements and looks forward to welcoming members back to upgraded and more comfortable spaces.

🚂 New Exhibit and Hall of Fame Inductions Highlight Painesville Museum Fundraiser
The Painesville Railroad Museum introduced a new interactive display during a fundraising dinner on Saturday, October 25, inside the Collinwood 9989 Engine Barn, which also houses an 1865 horse-drawn trolley. The exhibit was unveiled by museum vice president Tom Pescha and funded by a grant from the Lake County Visitors Bureau.
The evening also celebrated the induction of Pescha, R.J. Price, and Jim Wendorf into the 2025 Museum Hall of Fame. Proceeds from the event support the museum’s operating costs, including insurance and utilities.
The museum is located in the historic Painesville Depot, originally built in 1851 by the Cleveland, Painesville and Ashtabula Railroad Co., later succeeded by the Lake Shore Railroad Co. The current building, completed in 1893, is known for its Richardson Romanesque architecture, featuring sandstone walls, a slate roof, and marble and red oak interiors—earning it the nickname “The Jewel of Painesville.”
The depot was used to transport troops during World War II and saw its last passenger train in 1971. It later served as a bus station and storage site before being privately purchased in the 1990s. By 1997, the Western Reserve Railroad Association—a nonprofit—was formed to restore and operate the site as the museum.
The Painesville Railroad Museum continues preserving local rail history thanks to community support and dedicated volunteers.

🏡 Second Fed Rate Cut in 2025 Fuels Hopes for Mortgage Relief
The Federal Reserve issued its second rate cut of 2025 in October, lowering the federal funds rate by 0.25%.
The move, approved in a 10–2 vote, follows signs of a weakening labor market and ongoing economic instability, even as inflation rose to 3% in September.
Although the Fed doesn’t directly set mortgage rates, its policies influence them. Following the September cut, the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate dropped from 6.74% in July to 6.19% by late October, according to Freddie Mac. Economists expect October’s cut to reinforce this trend, with another reduction likely in December.
Pending home sales are climbing, and lower rates could support continued growth. Rates are near year-lows, spurring both refinance and purchase activity. The Mortgage Bankers Association expects two more quarter-point cuts by early 2026.
Despite criticism from President Trump’s administration—particularly aimed at Fed Chair Jerome Powell—the central bank has continued its cautious, independent approach. Inflation remains above the Fed’s 2% target, though well below its 2022 peak.
Buyers are advised not to wait for the “perfect” rate, as opportunities could be lost by holding out for small improvements.
The Fed’s final 2025 meeting is scheduled for December 9–10.

🏀 Mitchell Drops 37 in Return, Lifts Cavs Over Hawks
Donovan Mitchell returned to the lineup in dominant fashion Sunday night, scoring a season-high 37 points to lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 117–109 win over the Atlanta Hawks at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.
Mitchell, back after missing Friday’s game with hamstring tightness, hit 8 of 15 from beyond the arc, with 24 of his points coming in the second half. The game marked his 200th appearance with the Cavaliers, who are now 139–61 when he plays.
Jalen Tyson chipped in with 18 points, including a career-best five 3-pointers. De'Andre Hunter and Evan Mobley also had 18 and 14 points, respectively, with Mobley hitting a key 3-pointer in the final minutes.
The Hawks, playing without injured star Trae Young (out at least four weeks with a knee sprain), were led by Jalen Johnson with 23 points and 13 rebounds. Kristaps Porzingis added 15 points and 12 boards.
Despite being short-handed, Atlanta stayed close. The Cavs held a narrow 106–100 lead late in the fourth before Mobley’s three gave them breathing room. Tyson followed with a corner three to push the lead to 10, and Cleveland closed it out at the free-throw line.
Cleveland was also missing key players, including Jarrett Allen, Sam Merrill, and guards Darius Garland and Max Strus, who have yet to play this season.

🏃🏻➡️ Mentor’s Penkowski Leads Cardinals to Sixth at State Cross Country Finals
At the 2025 OHSAA State Cross Country Championships held at Fortress Obetz and Memorial Park, Woodridge High School added to its storied history by claiming a record-extending 11th Division III state title. The Bulldogs ran away with the win, scoring just 65 points—nearly 100 points ahead of second-place West Liberty Salem. This marks Woodridge’s first championship since 2020.
The team was led by senior Atticus Sloan, who finished fourth overall, with strong support from teammates who placed well inside the top 30.
Among Northeast Ohio schools, Chagrin Falls placed 10th in Division III, with junior Kelan Byrne leading the Tigers in 19th place.
In Division I, Mentor High School had a standout performance, with senior Matthew Penkowski finishing 15th in a fast field, clocking a 15:45.26. His effort helped the Cardinals earn a strong sixth-place finish in the team standings, making them one of the top-performing Northeast Ohio teams in the largest division.
Also in Division I, St. Ignatius senior Maxwell Friedrich narrowly missed a state title, finishing runner-up just behind St. Xavier’s Dom Ellis.
Division II featured more impressive showings from Northeast Ohio runners, with West Geauga’s Ian Res placing sixth, Aurora’s Nathan Eminian seventh, and Tallmadge’s Donevan Noah eighth—all breaking the 15:45 mark.
