🍿 "Death by Lightning" Brings a Forgotten Chapter of U.S. History to Netflix
If you're planning to take it easy this weekend, why not blend entertainment with a bit of history? Death by Lightning, a gripping new limited drama series, is now streaming on Netflix. The show dives deep into the life and tragic death of James A. Garfield, the 20th President of the United States, whose term was cut short by an assassin’s bullet in 1881.
Set against the backdrop of post-Civil War America, the series brings Garfield’s story to life with an intense and dramatic retelling. Emmy-nominated actor Michael Shannon takes on the role of President Garfield, while Matthew Macfadyen plays Charles Guiteau, the man responsible for his assassination. The show explores not just the political tensions of the era, but also the psychological unraveling of Guiteau and the national shock that followed Garfield’s death.
Whether you're a history buff or just in the mood for a powerful drama, this series offers a compelling way to learn about a lesser-known chapter of American history. So kick back, grab the remote, and dive into a story where history meets high-stakes drama.
🎓 Lakeland and ICASI Forge Pathway from Culinary School to College Degree
Lakeland and ICASI Partner to Create Streamlined Pathway for Culinary Students
Lakeland Community College and the International Culinary Arts and Sciences Institute (ICASI) have signed new articulation agreements that allow graduates of ICASI’s Advanced Techniques Diploma programs in culinary or pastry arts to earn 30 semester credit hours toward an Associate of Technical Studies (ATS) degree at Lakeland.
The partnership blends ICASI’s intensive hands-on training with Lakeland’s academic coursework, giving students a clearer path to both a specialized skillset and a college credential. Students can complete their ATS degree before, during, or after their time at ICASI, with classes offered online, in person, and during summer terms to accommodate flexible schedules.
This collaboration supports students aiming for careers in fine dining, entrepreneurship, or hospitality management, while also addressing regional workforce needs. By recognizing ICASI’s rigorous training within a degree pathway, the agreement helps students efficiently earn credentials that open doors to career advancement or further education.
Lakeland and ICASI have partnered since 2016, but this updated agreement expands transfer options and strengthens the connection between technical education and higher learning in Ohio’s growing hospitality sector.

🎭 Mentor Theatre Launches 102nd Season with Neil Simon’s Chaotic Comedy "Rumors"

Mentor Theatre Opens 102nd Season with Neil Simon’s Farce "Rumors"
While many community theaters have already wrapped up their fall productions, local high schools are just now taking center stage. Mentor Theatre is kicking off its 102nd season with the classic Neil Simon comedy Rumors, opening this weekend at the Fine Arts Center at Mentor High School.
Showtimes are Nov. 7 and 8 at 7 p.m., with a matinee on Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for students and seniors, and available at mentortheatre.ludus.com. Assigned seating returns for the first time since the pandemic, so early booking is advised.
First staged on Broadway in 1988, Rumors follows an upscale dinner party that unravels after the host is found unconscious and his wife is missing. As guests scramble to manage appearances, chaos, confusion, and miscommunication escalate in classic farcical fashion.
Director John Greene, who has led several Simon productions at Mentor, focuses on ensemble chemistry and grounded reactions over forced jokes. The cast includes students from multiple grades, many of whom are returning to the stage following previous hits like Leading Ladies and The Nerd.
Junior Jolie Fisher, an experienced performer and show choir member, says the show’s strength lies in its situational humor, comparing it to The Play That Goes Wrong in its blend of misunderstandings and slapstick.
Freshman Cooper Burress, making his stage debut, highlights the play’s fast pace and witty dialogue, noting how quickly the rehearsal period passed—but also how efficiently the production came together.
With a strong cast, timeless script, and classic comedy at its core, Rumors promises to open Mentor Theatre’s season on a high note.

🏈 Undefeated Mentor Faces Massillon Jackson in Regional Quarterfinal Showdown

Division I Playoffs: Undefeated Mentor Hosts Massillon Jackson in Quarterfinal
The road to Canton continues this Friday night as second-seeded Mentor takes the field against seventh-seeded Massillon Jackson in a Division I, Region 1 quarterfinal matchup. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on Nov. 7 at Jerome T. Osborne Stadium.
Mentor enters the postseason with a flawless 10-0 record and a powerful combination of offensive firepower and stingy defense. The Cardinals haven't lost a game since last year’s regional final and have looked dominant all season, averaging 41 points per game while allowing just 93 total points across ten contests.
After a 5-5 regular season, Massillon Jackson advanced to the quarterfinals by edging Brunswick, 24-17, in the opening round. Wide receiver Geno Szymanski played a key role in that win, hauling in touchdown passes of 80 and 42 yards to spark the Polar Bears’ offense. However, Jackson will face a significantly tougher challenge against a Mentor team that defeated Brunswick 45-7 earlier this year.
Mentor’s high-octane offense is fueled by a deep and talented roster. Running back Jackson Farley, a Kent State commit, has racked up 1,465 yards and 24 touchdowns this season. Quarterback Brogan Jones, just a sophomore, has thrown for 1,659 yards and 15 scores. On the receiving end, Miami (Ohio) commit Justen Hodge leads the way with 815 yards and 11 touchdowns on 41 catches. The offense operates behind a massive offensive line, anchored by Ohio State-bound Landry Brede.
While the Cardinals appear to be heavy favorites, postseason football often delivers surprises, and Jackson will look to pull off an upset and continue its playoff run. The winner of this matchup advances to face either Canton McKinley or Medina in the regional semifinal.
🏈 Defensive-Minded Lake Catholic Battles High-Powered Streetsboro in D-IV Quarterfinal

Lake Catholic Hosts Streetsboro in Division IV Quarterfinal at Neutral Site
Lake Catholic may not be playing in Lake County, but the Cougars are still hosting when they take on Streetsboro in a Division IV, Region 13 quarterfinal on Nov. 7. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Berkshire’s Great Lakes Cheese Stadium in Burton.
The third-seeded Cougars (8-2) earned a first-round bye, while No. 6 Streetsboro (9-2) advanced with a 35-21 win over West Geauga. That game was tied at 14 before the Rockets pulled away after halftime.
Streetsboro offers a balanced offense led by quarterback Colton Cox, who’s thrown for 1,049 yards and 10 touchdowns. The ground game is anchored by Janiere Cook (1,162 yards, 17 TDs) and Marcus Council (811 yards, 13 TDs), giving the Rockets plenty of scoring options.
Lake Catholic leans on a run-heavy offense and a disciplined, aggressive defense. Danny Zmorowski leads the rushing attack with 831 yards and nine touchdowns, while dual-threat quarterback Max Pisano adds 778 passing yards and 377 on the ground.
Defensively, the Cougars have been dominant. Marty Loncar leads the way with 135 tackles, 12 for loss, and six sacks. Mikey Barnes and Zach Povejsil add 19 tackles for loss and 13 sacks combined, forming the core of a unit that has controlled games all season.
The winner moves on to face either Glenville or Salem in the regional semifinal.
