❎ Mentor Races Still Undecided with Vote Margins as Thin as One
Two Mentor Races Hinge on Just a Handful of Votes
Nearly a week after Election Day, two critical races in Mentor remain undecided, with margins so narrow they may trigger automatic recounts.
In the race for a seat on the Mentor Exempted Village Board of Education, unofficial results show Daniel Hardesty leading Robert Izzo by a single vote. Meanwhile, the contest for Mentor Council at Large shows Annie Payne ahead of Brian Cook by only three votes.
These razor-thin differences underscore the significance of every ballot in local elections. According to the Lake County Board of Elections, the remaining provisional and absentee ballots could still sway the outcomes.
The Board will meet on November 25 to certify results and count those outstanding votes. Observers will be allowed to witness the central tabulation process. However, if the final margins fall within one-half of 1%, state law will require an automatic recount.
These close contests reflect a broader national trend toward tighter election outcomes, especially at the local level. Experts say the political climate has created evenly divided electorates, making voter participation more important than ever.
For now, Mentor’s final election results remain on hold, pending the official count and possible recount procedures.

Hometown Heroes Banners Coming Down as 2025 Program Wraps Up
Mentor’s annual Hometown Heroes banner program is drawing to a close for the year. The tribute banners, which honored local veterans and active-duty service members, will be taken down this week.
Participants will soon receive an email with details about where and when the banners can be picked up. City officials extend their thanks to everyone who participated in the 2025 program, helping to recognize the community’s military service members in a meaningful and visible way.
Looking ahead, applications for the 2026 Hometown Heroes program will be available in January.

✨ Retail Rewind: As Malls Decline, Suburbs Look to Reinvent Community Spaces
Great Lakes Mall in Mentor, once a lively hub for shopping and socializing, is now facing decline. Its owner’s recent bankruptcy and plans to sell the property have left residents and city leaders questioning what’s next.
Opened in the 1960s, the mall served as a community anchor for decades. But like malls across the U.S., it’s struggled with declining foot traffic, rising vacancies, and changing shopping habits. Nationwide, the number of enclosed malls has plummeted from 2,500 in 1986 to around 700 by 2022. A third of those could close by 2030.
Mentor is preparing for change. Updated zoning now allows mixed-use development combining retail, housing, and services — excluding warehouses. The city purchased the old Sears Auto Center for a fire station, while the former Macy’s will soon house a Dick’s House of Sport, a new interactive retail concept.
Other suburbs offer examples of adaptation. SouthPark Mall in Strongsville has added entertainment and dining options, while Richmond Town Square was demolished and is being redeveloped into Belle Oaks Marketplace — a $250 million mixed-use complex with apartments, retail, and parks.
Despite economic shifts, many in Mentor remain emotionally tied to the mall. It’s where generations grew up, worked, and gathered. Small businesses like Oliver’s Emporium continue to thrive in the space, offering a sense of community even as the mall evolves.
As traditional retail fades, the challenge is to reimagine these spaces without losing their social value. Whatever comes next for Great Lakes Mall, the goal is clear: to create a place that meets modern needs while still bringing people together.

🏡 The Best Carpet for Bedrooms in 2025: Comfort, Style, and Value Compared
How to Choose the Best Carpet for Your Bedroom Without Wasting Money
Buying new carpet for your bedroom should be an investment in comfort, not a shortcut to savings that costs more down the line. With so many choices on the market, it’s easy to end up with something soft at first but prone to crushing, staining, or fading within a year. Here's how to get it right the first time.
Start by choosing the right fiber. Avoid bargain options that may feel plush but lack durability. Polyester, especially Triexta blends, offers excellent stain resistance and softness at a reasonable price. It's ideal for homes with kids or pets. Nylon is tougher and more resilient under foot traffic but costs more. Wool is the most luxurious and eco-friendly, though it’s better suited for quiet, low-traffic bedrooms and requires a bigger budget.
Carpet density and pile height matter just as much as fiber. Look for a medium pile height (¼"–½") and a pile weight between 45–55 oz. This gives you a carpet that's soft, durable, and easier to clean than deep-pile alternatives. Low-density carpet may look good in the showroom, but it won’t bounce back after regular use—especially under furniture or in walkways.
When it comes to style, opt for cut pile or textured carpet for a cozy feel underfoot. Loop styles (like Berber) are durable but can snag easily—especially around pets. Speckled or multi-tone patterns are also great for hiding dirt and stains.
Don’t forget the carpet pad, which provides cushioning, noise reduction, and prolongs carpet life. Choose a 7/16” thick, 8+ lb density pad, ideally with a moisture barrier. A good pad can make even a mid-range carpet feel high-end.
Lastly, resist the temptation to buy the cheapest carpet available. While $1.99 per square foot might seem like a steal, you'll likely be replacing it much sooner. Spending just a bit more upfront for quality materials can give you years of satisfaction, better comfort, and lower maintenance costs.
This combination balances comfort, cost, and durability—making it the best choice for most bedrooms.

🏀 Cleveland’s Comeback Stalled by Miami’s Final-Second Lob
Cavaliers Edged Out by Heat in Overtime on Last-Second Dunk
The Cleveland Cavaliers came up just short in a high-scoring overtime matchup against the Miami Heat, falling 140–138 on a buzzer-beating dunk with 0.4 seconds remaining.
The decisive play—a lob drawn up by Miami assistant coach Chris Quinn—was executed after the Cavs had tied the game with a three-pointer moments earlier. It marked the Heat’s first win over Cleveland since their record-breaking 55-point loss in last season’s playoffs.
Cleveland pushed the pace throughout the game, attempting 120 shots—the most ever by a Heat opponent—and taking 65 three-pointers, one of the highest totals in league history. Despite the offensive output, defensive lapses and late-game execution proved costly.
Tensions rose in the third quarter during a sharp free-throw disparity, leading to the ejection of Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson. While the team stayed competitive until the final second, Miami’s fast-paced offense capitalized on a critical breakdown in the final play.
The loss came on a historic night in Florida, as it coincided with another buzzer-beater in Orlando. Though Cleveland fell short, the game offered another glimpse into the team’s offensive firepower and ongoing growth.
