📰 New Detention Facility Aims to Boost Safety and Inmate Rehabilitation in Lake County

Lake County’s new detention facility is designed to improve public safety and aid inmate rehabilitation, aligning with the sheriff’s office goal of positively impacting those in custody.

While the jail houses people who are being held accountable for crimes committed here in Lake County, it is critical that we are cognizant that the majority of the thousands of inmates we have arrive at our doors over 90% will return back to our communities and to their families. This new facility will give us the needed space and technologies to address complex medical needs, mental health issues, drug and alcohol addictions, anger management control, educational needs and more for the next 40-50 years. With adequate correctional care when people complete their time and return home they will be better prepared with skills not to return to jail and be successful in their future lives.

📰 Laketran Celebrates 30 Years of Supporting Veterans with Free Transit

To honor Veterans Week, Laketran and Geauga Transit are offering free public transportation to all U.S. military veterans from November 9 through November 15. Veterans can ride Laketran’s Local Routes and Park-n-Ride services for free by simply telling the driver they are a veteran.

Those using Laketran Dial-a-Ride, Rides on Demand, or Geauga Transit should mention their veteran status when scheduling their trip to qualify for the free fare.

In addition to this week-long gesture, Laketran offers a year-round reduced fare for Lake County veterans through its Reduced Fare Program.

The program also subsidizes fares for veterans traveling to medical or adult day care appointments within Lake County or to hospitals in University Circle.

For more details or to schedule a ride, call 440-354-6100.

🥫 Fill-a-Cruiser Returns: Mentor Police Collect Food and Funds for Local Pantries

Mentor Police are set to host their twelfth annual Fill-a-Cruiser Food Drive on Sunday, November 16, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The event will take place at the Giant Eagle supermarket at 8383 Tyler Boulevard.

During the drive, police officers will be stationed outside the store, collecting non-perishable food items and cash donations from community members. All contributions will be directed to local food pantries that serve families in need throughout the City of Mentor.

This year's drive will specifically benefit the food pantries operated by St. Bede and St. Mary of the Assumption, which provide essential support to Mentor residents facing food insecurity. The initiative reflects a continued partnership between law enforcement and the local community to ensure no family goes hungry during the holiday season.

The Mentor Police Department expressed gratitude for the community's ongoing generosity, which has been vital to the success of this annual event year after year.

🐶 5 Hidden Foods That Could Harm Your Pets

Keeping our pets healthy often starts in the kitchen — but some everyday foods can be surprisingly dangerous. Here are five hidden risks that many owners don’t realize can cause serious problems.

1. Sugar-Free Gum & Mints (Xylitol)

Xylitol is extremely toxic to dogs and can cause a sudden drop in blood sugar, seizures, or liver failure. Even a single piece of gum can be dangerous. Keep purses, backpacks, and coat pockets out of reach.

2. Grapes & Raisins

Just a few grapes or raisins can lead to kidney failure in dogs. Reactions vary widely between pets, so treat any amount as an emergency. Watch for vomiting or unusual lethargy after accidental ingestion.

3. Onions, Garlic & Chives

These popular cooking ingredients can damage your pet’s red blood cells, leading to anemia. They’re risky whether raw, cooked, powdered, or hidden in soups, baby food, or table scraps.

4. Macadamia Nuts

Just a handful can cause weakness, tremors, vomiting, and elevated body temperature in dogs. Many owners don’t realize these nuts are toxic because other nuts are safe in small amounts.

5. Unbaked Bread Dough

If your dog snatches uncooked dough off the counter, the yeast can expand in the stomach and produce alcohol — a dangerous combination that can cause bloating, disorientation, and breathing issues.

What To Do If Your Pet Eats Something Dangerous

Call your veterinarian or the 24/7 Pet Poison Helpline immediately. Quick action can make all the difference. When in doubt, never wait for symptoms to appear.

A few small precautions can protect your furry family members — and keep everyone safe, happy, and healthy at home.

🏀 Short-Handed Cavs Storm Back to Beat Heat Behind Allen’s Big Night

Jarrett Allen powered the short-handed Cleveland Cavaliers to a 130-116 comeback win over the Miami Heat on Wednesday night, snapping the Heat’s four-game winning streak. Allen led the way with a dominant 30-point, 10-rebound double-double.

The Cavaliers, who were without All-Stars Darius Garland, Donovan Mitchell, and Evan Mobley, leaned on strong performances from across the lineup. De’Andre Hunter scored 21 points, Lonzo Ball added 15 points and eight assists, and Craig Porter Jr. came off the bench to contribute 19 points, nine assists, and four blocks.

After trailing by 14 in the third quarter, Cleveland turned up the pressure on defense, converting 21 Miami turnovers into 29 points. The Cavaliers took their first lead of the game early in the fourth quarter and outscored the Heat 31-18 down the stretch.

Miami was led by Norman Powell with 27 points, while Davion Mitchell chipped in 16. Andrew Wiggins added 17 points, nine rebounds, and six assists, but also committed five turnovers. Kel’el Ware posted 15 points and 13 rebounds. The Heat played without Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro due to injuries.

With the win, Cleveland improved to 15-7 following a loss under coach Kenny Atkinson. They’ll return home to face the Toronto Raptors on Thursday.

🏈 Mentor’s Landry Brede Flips to Ohio State Ahead of Playoff Clash

Landry Brede, Mentor High School’s 6-foot-6, 315-pound right tackle, has flipped his college commitment from North Carolina State to Ohio State just days before his team’s playoff semifinal against Canton McKinley on November 14.

Brede had been committed to N.C. State since June, but a recent offer from Ohio State changed his plans.

Having visited Ohio State several times and grown up a fan, Brede said the opportunity was too good to pass up. He now plans to graduate early and enroll at OSU in January.

He joins a strong Buckeyes offensive line class alongside fellow Ohio linemen Sam Greer, Max Riley, and Mason Wilhelm, as well as Arizona’s Tucker Smith. Brede’s flip is part of a recent surge for Ohio State, which has also secured several high-profile recruits from other major programs.
