👃🏻 Persistent Odor in Mentor Spurs Chemical Response as EPA Investigates Industrial Link

Foul Odor in Mentor’s Woodhill Subdivision Triggers Chemical Mitigation Amid Ongoing Probe

Residents in Mentor’s Woodhill subdivision have long reported a sewage-like odor, prompting Lake County to launch a chemical treatment program as officials work to identify the source.

Hydrogen sulfide, a gas associated with wastewater, is believed to be behind the smell. Although complaints date back years, Lake County Sanitary Engineer Randy Rothlisberger said he became aware of the issue in early 2025.

Investigators suspect the odor may stem from Erie International Group, a Painesville facility producing animal-feed ingredients and specialty chemicals. The Ohio EPA recently cited the facility for internal treatment violations, but has not confirmed a direct link to the odor.

Crews have cleaned sewer lines, installed scrubbers, and inspected pump stations in the subdivision, but the smell persists. The area is connected to a complex 550-mile sewer network, complicating the investigation.

To provide relief, a chemical treatment system is being installed near Lake Shore Boulevard, roughly a mile from the affected area, and should be fully operational by year’s end.

City and county officials are coordinating with state agencies on the investigation. While the source remains unconfirmed, some leaders are urging greater accountability from potential contributors.

📰 Mentor Moves Forward with Marsh Tower After Voter Approval

The City of Mentor is now accepting construction bids for a new observation tower at the Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve, following strong voter approval earlier this year. Bids are due by December 5, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., with the project estimated to cost $1.85 million.

Standing 92 feet tall, the tower will be built along the marsh rim, about 1,000 feet north of the main trailhead. It will include a 25-by-25-foot top deck with panoramic views of Mentor Marsh, uplands, and Lake Erie. The structure will also feature an ADA-accessible elevated platform.

Construction is expected to begin in summer 2026 and be completed within 270 days of the official start date.

The project was originally budgeted in 2024 but carried over to 2025 due to planning delays. The total cost includes a $450,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

Mentor voters approved the project in May 2025, with over 73% in favor. Per city charter, improvements within the preserve require public approval.

The tower is expected to become a destination for visitors and residents to experience the natural beauty of the area from above.

🎅🏻 CORRECTION FROM YESTERDAY: Mentor Harbor Merry Market - Sunday Dec 7

🚪The Mentor Homeowner’s Video Doorbell Buyer’s Guide (2025 Edition)

If you’ve noticed more video doorbells around Mentor lately, you’re not imagining it. They’ve quickly become one of the most popular home upgrades for Lake County homeowners — combining convenience, security, and that extra peace of mind when packages arrive or unexpected visitors show up. If you’re thinking about getting one (or upgrading an older model), here’s a helpful guide to choosing the right one for your home.

Why They’re Worth It

Video doorbells let you see who’s at your door, talk to them from your phone, and automatically record activity. For Mentor homeowners, where package deliveries are constant and weather can be unpredictable, having a device that can capture clear video in rain, snow, or darkness is a huge plus.

1. Video Quality

Choose a camera with 1080p HD or better. Newer doorbells offer 2K or 4K video, which gives sharper details — great for identifying visitors, vehicles, or delivery drivers.

2. Motion Detection

Look for models that can spot people, packages, animals, or vehicles without alerting you every time a car drives by. Smarter detection saves you from constant notifications.

3. Night Vision

Ohio’s early winter sunsets mean you’ll rely on this feature. Infrared night vision is standard, but some brands now offer color night vision, which gives a clearer picture of what’s going on after dark.

4. Weather Performance

Mentor’s winters aren’t mild, so choose a model designed to handle freezing temperatures, wind, and lake-effect snow. Check for a good weather-resistant rating (IP level) before buying.

5. Power Options

You can choose between:

  • Wired models (more reliable, no recharging)

  • Battery-powered models (easier installation, flexibility for older homes)
If your house has a traditional doorbell, a wired model is usually the most convenient long-term.

6. Extra Smart Features

Some video doorbells integrate with:

  • Smart locks

  • Smart garages

  • Alexa or Google Home

  • Security systems

If you’re planning to build a smart home setup, choose a doorbell that fits the ecosystem you’re already using.

Top Brands to Know

Ring, Google Nest, Eufy, Arlo, and Wyze are the top choices for most homeowners.

  • Best for budgets: Wyze

  • Best without monthly fees: Eufy

  • Best video quality: Arlo

  • Best all-around: Ring

A quick tip before buying: check your Wi-Fi signal near your front door. A strong connection makes everything work smoother.

🏀 Mitchell, Merrill Lead Cavs Past Bucks After Giannis Injury Setback

The Cleveland Cavaliers stormed back for a 118-106 win over the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday night, led by Donovan Mitchell’s 37-point effort. The momentum shifted when Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo exited late in the second quarter with a left groin strain and did not return.

Antetokounmpo, listed as probable before the game due to a knee issue, played just 13 minutes, finishing with 14 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Further evaluation is scheduled for Tuesday.

Mitchell, the East’s second-leading scorer, scored 25 in the first half. It was his fifth game this season with at least 35 points. Sam Merrill added 20 points for Cleveland, hitting six threes—including 11 points in the fourth quarter—as the Cavaliers took over late.

The game was tied at 88 before Cleveland sparked a 12-3 run spanning the third and fourth quarters, eventually building a 14-point lead. Milwaukee had seven players in double figures, led by Ryan Rollins with 22 points and Myles Turner with 15.

Milwaukee had led 30-16 late in the first quarter, but Cleveland steadily rallied. With the win, the Cavaliers have now won seven straight against the Bucks and are 19-4 against Central Division opponents since March 2024.
