Overnight Pavement Grinding Scheduled for SR-2 in Mentor on November 20
That bumpy ride in the right lanes of Route 2 near the Hopkins Road overpass may soon be fixed ā or at least feel a whole lot smoother.
Drivers in Mentor should be prepared for overnight lane closures on State Route 2 as pavement grinding work gets underway near the Hopkins Road overpass. According to the Lake County Engineerās Office, the maintenance is scheduled to begin at 5:00 PM on Thursday, November 20, 2025, and continue through 6:00 AM the next morning.
The grinding work will address pavement imperfections, aiming to improve driving conditions along this stretch of highway. Motorists are advised to reduce speed, stay alert, and move over for road crews in the construction zone.
Temporary lane closures will shift throughout the night, and drivers should watch for signs and changing traffic patterns in the area.

š Smart Ways to Keep Mentorās Pets Safe: A Deeper Look at Lost-Pet Prevention
Lake Countyās Lost & Found Pets Roundup: Safety Tips Every Pet Owner Should Know
Losing a pet is every ownerās worst fear, and while most people know the basics ā keep gates latched, use a collar with ID, close the front door behind you ā many escapes happen because of small, overlooked habits. Here are deeper, smarter safety strategies that help keep Mentorās pets safe and quickly reunited if they wander.
Understand āThreshold Momentsā
Many pets bolt during high-excitement transitions: kids rushing out for school, groceries coming in, or visitors arriving. Build a quick āpause routineā at each doorway. Even a basic āsit and waitā command lowers the risk dramatically.
Audit Your Yard at Night
Dogs often find escape routes after dark. Walk your yard with a flashlight once a month to spot gaps under fences, loose posts, or objects stacked near the fence that could act as a stepstool. Many escapes happen when winter frost shifts soil or when summer storms weaken panels.
Microchip ā and Make It Searchable
Microchips only work if the information is up-to-date. Log into your microchip registry once a year (set a phone reminder) and verify the phone number and address. Add a secondary contact outside your household in case your phone battery dies or youāre unreachable during work hours.
Use a āReturn Fastā Digital Tag
Consider adding a QR-code smart tag to your petās collar. These allow finders to scan the tag and instantly see your contact info ā no need to wait for a vet or shelter to read a microchip.
Know Where to Report in Lake County

š Mentor Hockey Outlasts Avon Lake in 9-6 Shootout
Mentor Caps Off Weekend With High-Scoring Win Over Avon Lake
Mentor opened its hockey season with a strong showing at the Tim Alexander Memorial Tournament, finishing with a 2-1 record and a statement 9-6 victory over Avon Lake to close out the weekend at Hamilton Ice Arena.
After a tight schedule and two days of intense competition, the Cardinals faced Avon Lake on Sunday morning, building a dominant 6-2 lead after two periods. Will Norris, Kilian Beduhn, Matthew Perdue, Waylon Slagel, and Hayden Vallance (2) fueled the early offensive surge.
Avon Lake pushed back hard in the third, scoring four times in just over seven minutes to trim the deficit to one. Mentor called a timeout to regroup and quickly responded with Jake Mackeyās goal just 29 seconds later. Despite a late push from Avon Lake, including a hat trick from Brady Gibel and a multi-goal performance from Nate LePrevost, the Cardinals shut the door with two empty-net goals by Nathan Andree and Mackey.
Mentorās win denied Avon Lake a comeback and secured a strong finish to the tournament, even though Amherst claimed the championship with a 3-0 record and a 7-0 rout of Holy Name.
Throughout the weekend, Mentor showed depth and resilience, with multiple players contributing on both ends of the ice. Special teams also proved effective, converting both power-play chances against the Shoremen. Goaltender C.J. Lobue made 28 saves on 34 shots to anchor the win.
š Cavaliers Nearly Erase 22-Point Deficit in Hard-Fought Loss
The Cleveland Cavaliers mounted an impressive second-half rally on Wednesday night but ultimately fell short in a 114-104 loss to the red-hot Houston Rockets at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.
Down by as many as 22 points in the third quarter, the Cavaliers roared back with a 23-5 run to close the gap to just four heading into the fourth. Donovan Mitchell sparked the late charge, scoring 19 of his 21 points in the final quarter, while DeāAndre Hunter led all Cleveland scorers with 25 points. Evan Mobley added 18 points, though struggles at the free-throw lineāmissing six of tenāhampered the comeback.
Houston responded to Clevelandās surge with timely plays, including key buckets from Alperen Sengun and Amen Thompson. Sengun finished with 28 points and 11 rebounds, and the Rockets extended their win streak to five games.
Despite the loss, the Cavaliers showed resilience, especially in the second half. Lonzo Ball added seven points during the third-quarter push, and Jarrett Allen posted eight points and seven rebounds.
The night was also marked by physical play. Both Hunter and Houstonās Jabari Smith Jr. received flagrant and technical fouls, while NaeāQwan Tomlin picked up a technical as well.
Injury issues continue to plague Cleveland, with Darius Garland and Jaylon Tyson missing their fifth straight game, and Sam Merrill sidelined due to a recent hand injury. Tyson may return for Fridayās matchup against Indiana.
