📰 Four Property Tax Bills Head to Governor as Debate Grows Over School Funding
Ohio Lawmakers Send Property Tax Reform Bills to Governor DeWine
A package of four property tax reform bills is now with Governor Mike DeWine after clearing the Ohio Senate this week. Backed mainly by Republicans, the legislation is projected to deliver up to $2.4 billion in taxpayer savings over three years.
The reforms focus on limiting how school districts and local governments can increase property taxes. A central change targets the “20-mill floor,” which ensures districts receive a minimum portion of property tax revenue. One bill would cap future tax increases for districts at this floor, tying them to the inflation rate.
Another measure would apply similar restrictions to “inside millage” — levies enacted without voter approval — requiring county budget commissions to adjust rates based on inflation.
Also included are changes to tax rollbacks: residential credits would be expanded, while nonbusiness property rollbacks would be eliminated. Districts affected by reappraisals in 2023 or 2024 would receive state compensation. To fund that, the 2026 August sales tax holiday would be canceled.
A third proposal would fold fixed-sum levies into the 20-mill calculation, affecting 237 of Ohio’s 611 school districts. A fourth bill would allow county budget commissions to revise levies even after they’ve been approved by voters.
Supporters say the reforms will prevent sudden property tax spikes caused by rising home values and will give long-term relief to homeowners. Critics, mostly Democrats, argue the changes will reduce school funding and shift financial strain to local services. They also object to eliminating the tax holiday and to what they see as a lack of state support for impacted districts.
Governor DeWine has 10 days to sign, veto, or allow the legislation to become law without his signature.

📰 Subaru Event and Food Drive Launch to Support Lake County Seniors
Lake County Kicks Off Holiday Season with Subaru Event and Food Drive for Seniors
The holiday season begins with a charitable boost in Lake County as the Subaru Share the Love Event and annual Blizzard Bag Food Drive launch today.
Adventure Subaru in Painesville and Ganley Subaru in Wickliffe are participating in Subaru’s national initiative. For every new vehicle purchased or leased, Subaru will donate $300 to Meals on Wheels America, helping to provide meals for seniors in need.
Alongside this, the Lake County Council on Aging is collecting non-perishable food for Blizzard Bags—two to three days’ worth of shelf-stable food delivered to seniors who rely on home-delivered meals. These emergency bags help ensure seniors are prepared during winter storms.
Donations can be made at all senior centers in Lake County and at the Council on Aging office, 8520 East Avenue. Community members are encouraged to take part and support local seniors this winter.

🏀 Lake Catholic Girls Basketball Opens Season with Road Win Over West Geauga
The Lake Catholic Cougars girls basketball team kicked off their season on a strong note Friday night with a road win over the West Geauga Wolverines. Playing in Chesterland, the Cougars secured a 53-42 non-conference victory to start their 2025 campaign.
Lake Catholic held a narrow 22-21 lead at halftime, but found their rhythm in the second half. A dominant fourth quarter proved decisive, as the Cougars outscored West Geauga 17-7 in the final frame to seal the win by double digits.
With the season opener in the books, Lake Catholic now turns its attention to a December 1 matchup against Chardon.
🏈 Browns Rookie Carson Schwesinger Shines Despite Team Woes
Carson Schwesinger Emerges as Bright Spot for Browns Amid Tough Season
Despite a challenging season for the Cleveland Browns, rookie linebacker Carson Schwesinger has become one of the NFL’s biggest surprises — and a frontrunner for the league’s Rookie of the Year honors.
Drafted 33rd overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, Schwesinger was initially met with skepticism. With offensive struggles and a depleted linebacker corps, fans questioned the selection of another defender, especially one who wasn’t widely known. But that doubt quickly faded once Schwesinger took the field.
At 6-foot-3 and 242 pounds, the former UCLA walk-on has brought a physical, old-school style to the Browns' defense. Through 10 weeks, he has recorded 85 total tackles, including eight for loss, 1.5 sacks, and one interception. He’s also contributed in pass defense with two deflections and remains among the league’s top 15 tacklers.
His consistency has stood out, notching four double-digit tackle games and another four with seven or more tackles. Despite a high ankle sprain in Week 8, Schwesinger missed no games, returning quickly and leading the team in tackles upon his return against the Jets.
Originally a wide receiver and zero-star recruit in high school, Schwesinger transformed his game during his time at UCLA. After walking on to the Bruins' football team, he developed into a dominant linebacker, finishing his final college season with 136 total tackles and earning multiple All-American honors.
Now anchoring a battered Browns defense, Schwesinger’s relentless motor and smart play have made him a standout. While the Browns continue to struggle in the standings, the rookie’s rise offers fans a glimmer of hope for the future.
